Listening to his customers is a hallmark of John H. Broach, owner of Calvert Woodworks (www.calvertwood.com), a Prince Frederick-based custom woodworker specializing in cabinets, countertops and room remodeling.

Broach learned the woodworking craft from his father. ?Every room I walked into was about the woodwork ? how it was joined, how it was finished, how it brought warmth and character to the room.?

He began Calvert Woodworks in 1986 as a family business, offering ?superstore prices with the personal attention only a small business can give.?

?John is a really good designer because he listens to what his customers want,? said Calvert?s accountant Terrie Jeschke. ?He?s attentive to their needs.?

Originally focused on Calvert County, the company has expended into Howard and Kent counties. To handle the growing clientele, Broach moved Calvert Woodworks from the workshop in the family home?s basement to a 2,800-square-foot facility overlooking the Patuxent River.

As do many other entrepreneurs, Broach runs a mostly one-person operation. He has a regular bookkeeper and assistants to help him on the construction projects, but Broach is essentially his company?s entire workforce.

Calvert Woodworks has made a point of offering something a little different than the norm. Broach feels that the element of personal attention adds value to the products he provides.
