OCZ Octane (512GB)
OCZ?s new Octane line of solid-state drives (SSDs) marks something of a homecoming for the company: Its original Vertex series used Indilinx controllers, before SandFroce slowly started creeping in and taking over. But after OCZ acquired Indilinx last year, it was only a matter of time until their relationship was consummated again, and the Octane is the result. Judging by the 512GB model ($879.99 list) we tested, the second marriage between the two is off to a good start. For consumers the news is somewhat less sure, as in most circumstances the Octane does not own the field. But all in all, this is a nice place to start (or restart, as the case may be).
Indilinx has provided for the Octane the Everest controller platform, which is available on the line in both 6Gbps SATA III and 3Gbps SATA II flavors. (You can tell the difference by the label colors on the drives: orange for SATA III and blue for SATA II; ours was the speedier former.) The controller, which in this drive?s case is the IDX300M00-BC, supports up to eight channels and 16-way interleaving and does not have any limitations on data compression the way many SandForce drives do, which in theory should give it more balanced performance across a wider range of tasks.
Dynamic and static wear leveling and garbage collection algorithms are present as well, as are a couple of proprietary Indilinx technologies. One called nDurance minimizes write amplification with the intent of expanding the of the NAND flash memory it uses for storage (16 chips of 32GB IMFT synchronous memory based on a 25nm production process, along with 512MB of DRAM cache). Because we have yet to test any other 512GB SSDs, we can?t make exact comparisons within this particular capacity range. But we can compare the Octane with our current Editors? Choice drive, also by OCZ, the 240GB Vertex 3. And in doing so we find that the Octane, though holding its own nicely much of the time, does not deliver best-in-class speed in most cases. It performed particularly well, if not always spectacularly, in the AS SSD Benchmark, with superior speeds in sequential writes (314.3MBps versus 277.7MBps), 4KB read (23.8MBps versus 22.6, and in all segments of the Copy Benchmark (214.8MBps versus 208.6MBps for ISO Speed, 147MBps versus 146.9MBps for Program Speed, and 195.7MBps versus 189MBps for Game Speed). But despite a handful of isolated victories in the ATTO Disk Benchmark and a bare win in PCMark 7 video editing, the Octane usually came in just behind the Vertex 3.
One major exception was on the write tests that utilized higher queue depths, on which the Octane really fell behind. Its rating of 49.8MBps on the AS SSD Benchmark?s 4K-64Thrd write test cowered in the shadow of the OCZ Vertex 3?s 229.8MBps, and was well behind the results of almost every other similar-capacity drive we?ve tested recently, whether the new Intel SSD 520 Series (233.7MBps), Samsung 830 Series (104.9MBps), the Plextor PX-256M3 (236.5MBps), or pretty much anything else. (The one exception was the Intel SSD 510 Series, which finished just below it, at 48.4MBps.) We saw a nearly identical spread in the CrystalDiskMark 4KB write test with a queue depth of 32: 58.1MBps for the Octane, versus 252MBps for the Vertex 3 and better rates from almost everyone else. Intense writing like this is not the Octane?s forte.
We also decided to test the Octane?s to see if it really booted more quickly than the Vertex 3. Averaging over five cold boots, the Octane started up in 19.75 seconds and OCZ Vertex 3 in 19.74. Yes, that?s a difference so minuscule as to be unnoticeable, but it just shows that you shouldn?t necessarily expect the Octane will let you get into Windows faster than other SSDs. (Though of course, both times are considerably faster than anything you?ll find with a hard drive.)
Though the 512GB OCZ Octane is unquestionably a serious, powerful product, that?s buoyed by good boot times and consistent performance across data types, there are faster overall drives to be found. OCZ?s own Vertex 3, our Editors? Choice, is one, and retains our recommendation despite its lower capacity (which, for a boot drive, is still more than sufficient). We?re looking forward to seeing what else OCZ and Indilinx jointly devise in the future, but right now the best word to describe the Octane would seem to be ?promising.?

PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) ? Tony Wroten scored 21 points and went 9 of 12 from the free throw line as he led Washington over Washington State in true comeback fashion 59-55.
Washington (20-8, 13-3) erased a 45-32 deficit with 11 minutes left in the game to win.
"We knew it was going to be a rough game - as rough as any game we had left in the regular season," Washington coach Lorenzo Romar said. "Our guys stuck with it and found a way to win, despite us shooting 35 percent."
Wroten was everywhere for the Huskies. After helping stake Washington to a 6-0 lead, the Cougars (14-14, 6-10) went on a 10-0 run and capitalized as the Huskies went scoreless from the field for nearly eight minutes.
Wroten broke the drought when he split the key for a layup. C.J. Wilcox followed by hitting four 3-pointers, his final one giving the Huskies a 20-18 lead.
The two teams traded the lead for the remainder of the half, with Washington hitting from the floor while the Cougars took care of business at the line, going 11 of 12, but only shot 27 percent in the first half while the Huskies shot 36 percent. The game was tied at 28-all at the break.
In the early stages of the second half, WSU scored baskets on three dunks and went on a 12-0 run to take a 45-32 lead.
The nearly 9,325 in Beasley Coliseum were loud and the Cougars seemed to have all the momentum.
But during that run the Cougars began to show weakness. First it was Brock Motum, who led the Cougars with 17 points, who stumbled, hitting a bucket but missing the ensuing free throw.
Abe Lodwick had a chance to put two more points on the board for WSU when he grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled on the put-back. Instead, he missed both free throws.
Ultimately, it came down to free throws. WSU finished the game 17 of 32 from the line, going 6 of 20 in the second half. The Huskies were only 2 of 5 in the first half, but finished 17 of 24.
"We made our free throws and they weren't as fortunate. That was probably the difference in the game," Romar said. "But it wouldn't have mattered when they were up 13. We were rolled over. Earlier in the year, that game turns into (a 20-point deficit) instead of us coming back."
Trailing by two with 13 seconds left in the game, WSU called a timeout. Patrick Simon entered the game for the first time and set up what could have been a game-winning scenario for the Cougars.
Simon found his way to the baseline and powered up a 3-pointer, but shot an airball. The Huskies were able to rip the rebound and Wilcox, who finished with 16 points, hit both free throws to seal the game.
The Cougars out-rebounded the Huskies 42-35.
Abdul Gaddy scored 10 points for Washington and Marcus Capers tallied 14 for WSU.

Capitals Vs. Maple Leafs: Washington Holds On For 4-2 Win, Tightens Southeast Division Race
The Washington Capitals won back-to-back games for the first time in over a month as they built a 4-0 lead and held on to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 Saturday night.
The win left Washington alone in 9th place in the Eastern Conference with 67 points, one point behind Florida and Winnipeg for the Southeast Division lead. In other results Saturday, Winnipeg lost 3-2 to the St. Louis Blues in a shootout, while Florida rallied to defeat Carolina 3-2 in a shootout.
For the Capitals, Michal Neuvirth stopped 28 Toronto shots to record his second straight win, but was denied a shutout with 4:50 gone in the third period when Colby Armstrong scored his first goal of the season with Toronto on a power-play. The Maple Leafs managed to make the final 4:57 more interesting then most Capital fans would have liked when Tim Connolly scored his 10th goal of the season to provide the final margin.
This was the Capitals last game before the NHL trade deadline, which comes on Monday at 3 p.m. The absence of Mike Knuble and Roman Hamrlik (both healthy scratches along with John Erskine), will only fuel the speculation that one (or both) of them will be heading out of town.

Getty ImagesThe various concussion-related lawsuits filed in recent months have suddenly taken on a far more serious tone.? According to NBC Chicago, Dave Duerson?s estate has filed a wrongful death action against the NFL.
Duerson committed suicide on February 17, 2011.? The lawsuit claims that, ?[i]f the NFL would have taken the necessary steps to oversee and protect Dave Duerson by warning him of the dangers of head traumas . . . then [he] would not have suffered dangerous repetitive head trauma, would have recovered more rapidly, and would not have sustained permanent damage to his brain which contributed to his death.?
This allegation presumes that the NFL knew or should have known about the dangers of head traumas during Duerson?s career, and that he would have chosen not to play if that information had been shared with him.
?CTE has been a known entity to the NFL for years,? said William Gibbs, who represents the Duerson estate.? ?This degenerative brain disease causes various symptoms ranging from cognitive decline to dementia.?? The NFL?s blatant disregard of the significance of this crisis amongst its retirees is baffling.?
?We have not seen the lawsuit and therefore our attorneys have not had an opportunity to review it,? the league said in a statement forwarded to PFT.? ?Dave Duerson was an outstanding football player and
citizen who made so many positive contributions but unfortunately encountered serious personal challenges later in his life. We sympathize with the Duerson family and continue to be saddened by this tragedy.?
Hundreds of former players have filed suit against the league, claiming that the NFL knew about the long-term dangers of concussions and failed to disclose those risks to players.? Duerson played from 1983 through 1993, with the Bears, Giants, and Cardinals, winning a pair of Super Bowl rings.? He was one of the named plaintiffs in the Reggie White antitrust lawsuit, and he was a member of the NFLPA Executive Committee.
Last year, NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said that Duerson?s death has ?shaken me personally.?? The NFLPA hasn?t said anything about the various and growing concussion lawsuits.? In response to Duerson?s lawsuit, spokesman George Atallah told PFT that the NFLPA has no comment.
Given Duerson?s past role in the NFLPA, one thing to watch going forward is whether the NFLPA will take an affirmative position on the merit of the allegations that the NFL knew about the risks of head injuries and failed to take appropriate action.

ScienceDaily (Feb. 22, 2012) ? Scientists are reporting use of a new technology for sifting through the world's largest remaining pool of potential antibiotics to discover two new antibiotics that work against deadly resistant microbes, including the "super bugs" known as MRSA.
Their report appears in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
Sean Brady and colleagues explain that an urgent need exists for new medications to cope with microbes that shrug off the most powerful traditional antibiotics. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections, for instance, are resistant to most known antibiotics. MRSA strikes at least 280,000 people in the U.S. alone every year, and almost 20,000 of those patients die. The typical way of discovering new antibiotics involves identifying and growing new bacteria from soil and other environmental samples in culture dishes in the laboratory. That environmental treasure-trove is the largest remaining potential source of new antibiotics. Researchers then analyze the bacteria to see if they make substances that could be used as antibiotics to kill other microbes. But most bacteria found in nature can't grow in the laboratory. That's why Brady and colleagues took a new approach to this problem.
The researchers removed DNA from soil bacteria that wouldn't grow in the lab. Then, they put this DNA into different bacteria that do grow well in culture dishes, and these bacteria acted like incubators for the new DNA. The approach enabled Brady's team to study the substances made by the soil bacteria's DNA in the lab. The U.N. General Assembly has approved a resolution backing an Arab League plan that calls for Syria's president to step down and strongly condemns human rights violations by his regime. The vote in the 193-member world body was 137-12 with 17 abstentions.
Russia and China, who vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council, voted against the resolution.
"Today, the U.N. General Assembly sent a clear message of the people of Syria: the world is with you," U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said in a statement. Assad "has never been more isolated. A rapid transition to democracy in Syria has garnered the resounding support of the international community. Change must now come."
Earlier on Thursday, senior Russian diplomat?Gennady Gatilov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying that the draft is very close to the U.N. Security Council resolution that Russia and China vetoed on Feb. 4.
At the time, Russia had expressed concerns about the draft text, saying it feared the resolution would lead to the kind of military intervention and regime change seen in Libya after last year's council action intended to protect civilians from attacks by forces loyal to long-time leader Moammar Gadhafi.

Cisco challenges Microsoft, Skype merger in EU (AP)
BRUSSELS ? Networking company Cisco said Wednesday that it is challenging Microsoft's $8.5 billion takeover of Skype at the European Union's top court to ensure Microsoft won't block other video conferencing services.
The European Commission, the EU's competition regulator, cleared the takeover in October and the merger was completed later that month. Microsoft Corp. hopes that owning Skype will allow it to better compete across platforms with other tech giants including Apple Inc. or Google Inc.
But for Cisco Systems Inc., the world's largest maker of computer networking equipment, the Skype deal creates a serious challenger to its video conferencing systems.
"Cisco does not oppose the merger, but believes the European Commission should have placed conditions that would ensure greater standards-based interoperability," Marthin De Beer, the head of Cisco's video conferencing division, wrote in a blog post.
Microsoft said it was confident it would prevail in an appeal.
"The European Commission conducted a thorough investigation of the acquisition, in which Cisco actively participated, and approved the deal in a 36-page decision without any conditions," Microsoft said in a statement.
Cisco wants the General Court of the EU to check whether the Commission was right in clearing the Skype takeover without any concessions. It argues that the Commission should have required Microsoft to guarantee open standards for video conferencing, similar to what exists for mobile phone calls.
Such standards would eventually allow users of Cisco video phones to make calls to users of Skype and other services like Google Voice.
De Beer said that without these standards, Microsoft could "seek to control the future of video communications."
"Making a video-to-video call should be as easy as dialing a phone number," De Beer wrote. "Today, however, you can't make seamless video calls from one platform to another, much to the frustration of consumers and business users alike."
But Cisco fears that Microsoft will end up blocking Skype for users of other services, especially if it starts charging businesses for teleconferencing.
Skype, with roughly 170 million users, is by far the most popular voice-over-Internet service.
Antoine Colombani, a spokesman for the European Commission, said it will defend its decision in court.
