LONDON ? Harry Potter battled the forces of evil and now is set to conquer the web ? coming to e-books in a groundbreaking deal that has delighted fans but alarmed the book industry that helped make creator J.K. Rowling a billionaire.

Rowling announced Thursday that her seven novels about the boy wizard will be sold for the first time as e-books, beginning in October, exclusively through a new online portal to her wizarding world called "Pottermore."

The deal brings longtime e-book refusnik Rowling into the digital fold, but comes as a bitter potion to established booksellers, who will be shut out of the latest chapter of a vastly profitable saga.

"You can't hold back progress," Rowling told reporters in London. "E-books are here and they are here to stay."

The Potter novels will be available as audiobooks and e-books in multiple languages, initially including English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Japanese. Prices have yet to be set. The "Pottermore" website, meanwhile, is an immersive online environment that combines elements of a role-playing game and a digital encyclopedia with social networking and an online store.

By selling directly to fans, Rowling is bypassing established online retailers like Amazon, although the creators of "Pottermore" say the books will be compatible with popular e-readers including Amazon's Kindle, Sony's Reader and Apple's iPad.

Tom Turcan, chief operating officer of the new venture, Pottermore Ltd., said Rowling wanted "to make the books available to everybody, not to make them available only to people who own a particular set of devices, or tethered to a particular set of platforms."

Phil Jones, deputy editor of The Bookseller, a London-based trade magazine, said cutting out retailers was a gamble ? but if anyone can pull that off, it would be Rowling. The 45-year-old British author has retained the electronic publishing rights to her books, which have sold 450 million copies around the world in paper form.

"Only Rowling could do this," he said. "I don't think any other author could launch their own site and get fans to buy e-books through it. And I think she will succeed. I think she will get hordes of fans on the site and sell hundreds of thousands of e-books."

Booksellers hope the e-books will further boost sales of the printed Potter books, but have otherwise been cut out of the electronic future of the mega-successful series.

Jon Howells, spokesman for Britain's Waterstone's chain, said the Harry Potter book launches, which for years drew throngs of fans in wizard garb to midnight store openings, "have become the stuff of legend at Waterstone's and other booksellers."

"We're therefore disappointed that, having been a key factor in the growth of the Harry Potter phenomenon since the first book was published, the book trade is effectively banned from selling the long-awaited e-book editions," he said.

"Pottermore" had been the subject of intense speculation among fans since it appeared on the Internet with the words "coming soon." Rowling revealed Thursday it is a website designed to immerse users in her intricately crafted world of wizards and magic.

The site lets fans delve into Harry Potter's beloved Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. They can shop for wands in Diagon Alley, travel to Hogwarts from the imaginary Platform 9 3/4 at London's King's Cross train station and be sorted into Hogwarts school houses by the perceptive Sorting Hat.

Along the way are wand fights, games and new information about characters beloved around the world, including Harry's boorish relatives, the Dursleys.

The website also features 18,000 words of new Potter material from Rowling, who said it will have "information I have been hoarding for years" about the books' characters and settings. The level of detail is sure to please fans of Potter minutiae, who have been sharing their enthusiasm online for years.

"I go into ridiculous detail about wand woods," Rowling said.

"Pottermore" was trademarked in 2009 by Warner Bros., which distributes the Potter movies. But the site is a partnership with Sony Corp. and its online shop is described as "a potential outlet for Sony products." Rowling spokesman Mark Hutchinson said Sony was selected as "the most appropriate partner."

The site goes live on July 31 ? which as true fans know is Harry Potter's birthday ? when 1 million registered users will be chosen through an online competition to help flesh out the Pottermore world. Visitors can register now to enter that competition.

The site will be open to all users from October, in languages including English, French, German and Spanish.

Initially it will follow the plotline of the first book, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone," with the six other adventures added later.

"(It's) a way I can be creative in a medium that didn't exist when I started the books back in 1990," Rowling told reporters. She said it was a way to incorporate the thousands of "stories, drawings, ideas, suggestions" she still receives from fans four years after the last Potter book was published.

Potter fans should be delighted by the new digital world, but Rowling said she wanted to keep the emphasis of the site firmly on the written word.

"We've had a lot of requests for online games," she said. "I wanted to pull it back to reading."

The seven Harry Potter novels have made Rowling one of the world's richest women, with a fortune estimated by Forbes magazine at $1 billion.

The last book, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," was published in 2007, and Rowling said she still has no plans to write an eighth. But she said Pottermore was a way to reconnect with a character and a universe she loved.

"It is exactly like an ex-boyfriend," Rowling said. "Finishing writing Harry ? I have only ever cried in that way and that much when my mother died. I have never cried for a man the way I cried for Harry Potter."

There may yet be another Potter book ? a long-anticipated encyclopedia. Rowling said she was still considering compiling one, with the proceeds going to charity.

"Will there ever be an encyclopedia?" Rowling said. "Possibly."

The final Harry Potter film, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," has its world premiere in London on July 7. Hutchinson said timing of the website announcement had nothing to do with the Warner Bros. movie.

Zhang wraps up World War II-era epic '13 Women' (AP)

HONG KONG ? He's tackled rural drama, kung fu choreography and period epic over a 23-year career that has made him Chinese cinema's top names. But Zhang Yimou says his recent production starring Christian Bale has been one of his toughest.

Zhang finished shooting his adaptation of the Yan Geling novel "The 13 Women of Nanjing" at a studio near the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing on Wednesday. He said in a statement issued by his production company that it was one of his most grueling shoots ever.

While the shoot for his 2002 kung fu picture "Hero" also lasted 5 1/2 months, that production allowed him to crisscross the country for different locations.

"This movie was based in (the Nanjing county) Lishui. It's been a great imposition on everyone to slave away for 5 1/2 months in confined surroundings. I thank everyone," Zhang was quoted as saying in the statement.

"13 Women" is about 13 sex workers in Nanjing who volunteered to replace university students as escorts for invading Japanese soldiers in the World War II era. The temporary English title for Zhang's adaptation was earlier announced as "Nanjing Heroes" but has not been finalized. Oscar winner Bale plays an American priest.

The $90 million production, which is scheduled to be released Dec. 16, was a 164-day shoot and averaged 18-hour working days, Zhang's production company said.

Working with an international team including Bale and veteran Hollywood special effects expert Joss Williams, one of Zhang's cultural adjustments was yelling "action" and "cut" in English instead of Chinese, the statement said.

Zhang's credits also include "Red Sorghum," "Ju Dou," Raise the Red Lantern" and "The Story of Qiu Ju." His most recent release is last year's romance "Under the Hawthorn Tree."

we have a contract with our realtor to help us find a place. well, my wife found one that is FSBO?and it is perfect, it?s the one we will be purchasing. are we obligated to our realtor since this is not a listing with a real estate company? or does it being a FSBO ?void? our responsibilities to her?

Wall Street ends higher, but weak volume a warning sign (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stocks rose on Monday, as the latest development to reduce Greece's debt helped draw buyers and the S&P 500 touched a key support level, but anemic volume signaled the recent weakness may not be over.

Stocks erased early losses as the S&P 500 dipped toward 1,259.78, its 200-day moving average, which is often viewed as a pivotal point in determining the market's direction. A drop below that level would be the first since September 2010.

"When you're in the midst of a bullish trend since July of last year -- that's when the bottom was -- I think people tend to look for places to buy dips, and this is just an obvious place to expect some buying to come into the market," said John Kosar, director of research at Asbury Research in Chicago.

The moves higher may have been slightly exaggerated due to thin volume. Just 5.66 billion shares traded on the New York, Nasdaq and NYSE Amex exchanges, compared with a daily average of 7.58 billion.

Euro-zone finance ministers gave Greece two weeks from Monday to approve stricter austerity measures in return for another 12 billion euros in emergency loans, piling pressure on Athens to get its ragged finances in order.

The euro-zone finance ministers expect the money, the next tranche in a 110-billion-euro bailout of Greece by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, to be paid by mid-July. Greece needs the loans by then to avoid a debt default.

Despite the development, financials were the S&P 500's weakest sector. Shares declined after Citigroup cut price targets on a number of banks, including Goldman Sachs (GS.N), citing a tough regulatory environment. Goldman's shares slipped 1.5 percent to $135.14, while Morgan Stanley (MS.N) shares dropped 1.9 percent to $22.39.

The S&P 500 is up about 22 percent since the end of August, but has pulled back in recent weeks amid signs that the U.S. economic recovery is faltering.

The CBOE Volatility Index (.VIX), known as the VIX, lost 8.5 percent, its biggest daily percentage drop since March 21.

"I think the (economic) soft patch is already priced into the market, but we're only three or four weeks away from the heart of earnings reporting, and that should be the catalyst that turns the pullback into a correction or ends the pullback," said Hank Smith, chief investment officer at Haverford Trust Co. in Philadelphia.

Some see the latest downward trend for stocks as intact for now.

"We continue to see the intermediate-term indicators in a negative state, while short-term oversold conditions increase," said Larry McMillan, president of McMillan Analysis Corp., in Morristown, New Jersey.

The S&P health-care index (.GSPA) rose 1 percent and ranked among the session's top-performing sectors.

The Food and Drug Administration approved a tamper-resistant pain drug from Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) and Acura Pharmaceuticals Inc (ACUR.O). Acura shares jumped 16.3 percent to $4.50, while shares of Pfizer, a Dow component, rose 0.05 percent to $20.27.

In the consumer discretionary sector, which was also among the top-performing groups, Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) gained 0.4 percent to $53.04. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled for the retail giant in the largest sex-discrimination lawsuit in history, saying class-action status for female employees seeking billions of dollars had been improperly granted.

Advancing stocks outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by about 2 to 1. On the Nasdaq, advancers beat decliners by about 15 to 11.

The only reason I see for being a non-profit is that as a for-profit business no one in their right mind would finance the start-up operations. So I guess as a non-profit you could ask donations to fund your business. However, it would seem to be a bit inefficient to donate money to be re-invested only to be redistributed. Why not avoid the business and slippage of that and just redistribute the funds directly?

In contrast, 59 percent of private-sector workers were offered a 401(k) or other retirement account, and 41 percent participated. "For some time now, the trend has been that individuals are going to be responsible for more and more of the financing of retirement," says Bob Carlson, editor of Retirement Watch and author of The New Rules of Retirement: Strategies for a Secure Future. "Corporate pension plans have been reduced and fewer employers are paying for retiree medical expenses." While private-sector traditional pensions are typically insured by the federal government, most 401(k) plans and retiree health benefits are not. "Even people who have been retried 15 or 20 years have seen their medical plan that is promised by the employer cut back or reduced," says Carlson.

You will be responsible for shifting your money into age-appropriate investments, while also earning enough return to make your money last for the rest of your life. Managing your own investments may require more vigilance than simply withdrawing 4 percent of your savings each year. "Your spending formula should be flexible, and vary based on investment returns and spending changes you have," says Carlson. "Look at your budget regularly and make adjustments on a regular basis to reflect the changes that have occurred."

Manage your taxes. Not all of the money you've stashed in a traditional 401(k) and IRA is available for spending in retirement. Income tax will be due on each withdrawal. "People need to pay attention to the tax rules and master all the strategies for taking money out of an IRA," says Carlson. "Anything you can do to reduce taxes is going to give you more money to spend." Retirees need to space out withdrawals to minimize their tax bills and remember to take required minimum distributions after age 70? to avoid a tax penalty. Also, consider pre-paying income tax on some of your contributions, using a Roth account to add flexibility and tax diversification to your portfolio. "One of the old rules of retirement was that when you went into retirement, your tax bill declines, but the idea that your taxes will fall in retirement no longer applies," says Carlson. "When you add up all the taxes you pay in retirement, it is going to be one of your top three expenses, and for some people it will actually be your biggest expense."

Minimize costs. You can't control how your investments will perform in the future, but you do have a measure of control over how much you pay in fees. "As you invest for retirement, pay close attention to fees," says Miller. "Do your best to invest in low-cost passive funds and minimize the bit that is being taken out by fees."

Lower Social Security benefits. Future retirees will have less of their pre-retirement income replaced by Social Security than current retirees enjoy. Workers born in 1937 or earlier were able to claim the full amount of Social Security they were entitled to at age 65. But the full retirement age gradually increased for those born after that, hitting 66 for those born between 1943 and 1954, and 67 for those born in 1960 or later. People who sign up at age 65, despite the now-higher full retirement age, will receive a reduced payout. "When you boost the retirement age, it is an across-the-board benefit cut for Social Security beneficiaries," says Miller.

Living longer. Baby boomers born in 1946 can expect to spend an average of 18 years in retirement if they are male, and 20 years if they are female, according to Social Security Administration projections. For those born in 1980, the length of retirement is expected to grow to an average of 19.3 years for men and 21.2 years for women, even after factoring in the higher Social Security retirement age. And those are just the averages. "A number of people are probably going to spend more years in retirement than they did working," says Carlson.

Test it out. Having enough money to retire comfortably is no guarantee that you will enjoy being retired. Taking an extended vacation or gradually shifting to part-time work are both good ways to see if you will enjoy a permanent exit from the workforce. "When people go away on vacation, sometimes they will spend weeks planning, but often people don't spend any time at all thinking about how they want their retirement to unfold," says Dychtwald. "It's a time of life that would be benefitted by forethought and trying out different types of retirement. If one doesn't work, switch to another type."

David Simmons re-elected as Mayor of Donna

The party was on for Mayor-Elect David Simmons? camp in Donna Saturday, shortly after the polls closed for the run-off election for the mayoral seat.

Simmons, the incumbent, celebrated his victory over opponent and former mayor Hector Casiano, by taking a bite out of a jalape?o.

"The most important thing, Simmons said, is that this election was won not for me, not for the city commission, but for you - the tax payers and the voters in the city."

After much praise from his supporters, Simmons made several promises for a better Donna.

"We've been held back much too long,? Simmons said, ?and it's time for us to start moving forward. We have a lot of new projects coming-up and you will see a change in this community - I promise you that."

Meanwhile, Casiano accepted his defeat and was consoled by grandchildren and friends.

"I was hoping that I was going to be victorious, because I wanted to do good for Donna,? Casiano said. ?But if the people of Donna don?t come out to vote - there's 8,000 voters and only 2,000 come out, 20 percent, 6,000 don?t care about Donna. Well I guess I gave it the best shot."

With the run-off behind him and three more years ahead, Simmons said he's ready to continue the work he and city commissioners have already begun, and hopes to put the entire city to work.

"We need to create jobs for our people they need to work,? Simmons said. ?The city and the school district is no longer going to be our largest employer - we need to create jobs."
