Sometimes I question what the point is in turning on the news or reading the morning paper. Every time, the reports are identical, with only the specifics being modified; it?s always about discord and controversy. It?s in the news, it?s in our history books, it?s in our films, and the prevailing theme seems to be religion. Faiths fighting faiths, creeds against creeds, holy wars carried on against holy wars. Think about it: What could possibly be holy about war?

What?s in the center of these disputes? I?d guess it?s a question of ethics, but how would you define ethics? In laymen?s terms, it?s our ability as people to tell right from wrong. Every religion can agree on this, at least, but why do they seem to conflict on so many other points? Maybe faiths of the world are intrinsically incorrect, but is that really the case? It is highly unlikely, because then you have people who are moral and don?t belong to any particular religion. Is people?s aggression, then, related to theology or our moral values? Reflect on this: if there weren?t any theology, would moral values continue to be?

I feel these themes reveal a more deep-seated concern: what folks think of as just or unjust. If I think it?s good to purloin bread to feed my family, but you think it?s evil no matter what, we have a bit of a quandary. Soon, we will be arguing over whose opinion is more formidable, and in this culture, the most formidable individual comes first.

Who can opt to establish what is just or unjust? What is there for us to do because there?s not a planetary sanction on this focus?

We must discover a meeting place between our opposing points of view, instead of just zeroing in on how we differ, in order to coexist (our greatest hurdle). There are associations in our society that try to do just this. Think of the Unitarian Church, for instance, which is a melting pot of faiths that tries to support the most basic human principles. While their mission seems well intended, it leaves out people who do not believe in any supreme being.

Other organizations address this concern, by endorsing human ethics that are devoid of any religious or mystical beliefs or connotations. NXIVM is one such collective, set up by entrepreneur Keith Raniere. Their purpose is to be an example of the decent culture of humanity. Tactics like these assist in traversing the divide connecting where we are as a society and where we would like to be.

However we deal with the situation, it appears that added associations such as these are a necessity in our society. However we handle the state of affairs, we simply must find a solution to the problem and learn to live together in peace.
