Don't Waste Money on Fitness Equipment | Life on Healthy

Don?t Waste Money on Fitness Equipment

Find Out Everything You Need To Know About Fitness Equipment. Do You Need It? Or Are You Better Off Investing Into A Fitness Trainer?

Fitness equipment in your home will not produce the same fitness results that a qualified personal trainer can offer for around the same price as the expensive fitness equipment, if not cheaper. Since a piece of fitness equipment is nothing more than an object, it is unable to compete with the advantages that an actual fitness trainer can provide. This equipment will not assist you in the proper techniques for losing weight and getting into better shape. Additionally, fitness equipment will become useless once you achieve your desired level of health.

As a resident interested in improving their health, you need to establish a proper fitness plan. The expertise that a fitness trainer has with fitness equipment will provide you a much better knowledge.

Fitness Equipment Is A Temporary Solution To Better Health

The fitness equipment, regardless of what type of equipment it is, only has limited use. There is not one piece of fitness equipment that will assist you in completing all of your fitness goals.

As mentioned earlier, this equipment is also expensive and has a tendency to collect dust after you have reached your fitness goals (or when you have decided to give up on reaching your fitness goals, as many people who purchase fitness equipment do).

]]>

Equipment For Fitness Will Not Plan Your Entire Workout

Regardless of the price that you pay for your fitness equipment, it will not plan your entire workout. It will not tell you everything that you need to do to succeed at your individual fitness goals.

Only a proper personal trainer can guide you to successfully completing your fitness goals, even if they seem impossible to tackle.

Invest Smart By Rethinking Your Fitness Equipment

In reality, there is not much of a difference between the price of fitness equipment and the price of hiring a personal trainer. Both options are considered expensive, but you will gain so much more from a personal trainer than you ever will from a piece of equipment.

Your Mental Health

Fitness equipment will not help you in maintaining your mental health. Even though you are trying to achieve a higher level of physical health, you will only receive the best results when you are mentally prepared for the enduring workout sessions that you will face.

A fitness trainer can assist you in keeping your morale up while the fitness equipment will encourage you to give up on your fitness goals, if anything.

Improving Your Social Life

By investing in the services of a fitness trainer against purchasing fitness equipment at your local store, you can improve your social life. You often meet other people with similar fitness goals when you work out in a fitness center.

Personal trainers want you to succeed. It?s important to them, as it is to you.

You will have someone to talk to (in your personal trainer) when you have questions regarding your fitness plan. A piece of fitness equipment is unable to carry on a conversation with you, leaving you with a lonely workout session.

So, In Conclusion..

Fitness equipment won?t do you a lot of good unless it?s used by you under the guidance of your personal trainer. Your fitness trainer, just like any human, will always be more valuable than a mechanical device.

As I?m sure you?ve seen numerous people line up at health clubs or gyms on the treadmills and other machines and avail to no results.

Oil rises on strong consumer spending numbers (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil is climbing on a rebound in U.S. consumer spending.

Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude on Monday rose $2.10, or 2.5 percent, to $87.49 per barrel in New York. Brent crude rose 75 cents to $112.11 in London.

Prices jumped after the government said consumer spending in July rose by the most in five months, easing fears that another recession may be coming. Consumers drive the U.S. economy, and traders see the report as a sign that energy demand for oil and gasoline will rebound.

At the pump, gasoline was unchanged at a national average of $3.61 per gallon.

Well Priced Homes for Sale in Troy Mi ? Real Estate Blog

August 27, 2011 by admin

Throughout Troy Mi there are a number of properties that have become available for buyers that are looking for a great deal on a house. With the real estate market starting to make a comeback there are some families that are beginning to take a closer look at the discounts that have been made possible by the number of home foreclosures. Through the listings of homes for sale Lafayette LA residents can find bargains on bank owned properties that allow them to move into a foreclosed house in a short time frame. Being vacated by the owners that were unable to make their mortgage payments many of the homes for sale in Troy Mi have been discounted to help them sell.

Although the real estate market has been depressed and sales of homes have been low, the market is beginning to make an upswing and with the number of houses that are being purchased the pricing of the houses is starting to increase slowly. By working with a realtor who knows the areas and understands the complexities of buying foreclosed and bank owned properties it is still possible to take advantage of the lowest prices that real estate has seen in more than a decade and buy one of the homes for sale in troy mi. Before the interest rates start to climb and housing market makes a full recovery a few smart buyers are making sure that they can buy a house that fits their needs and is priced right for them to make a purchase. Working with a realtor it is possible to buy a house and save thousands of dollars before the prices go up.When buyers start contacting and showing interest in your property, schedule an open house to enable them to view your home. The biggest mistake you can make here is not to clean up and clear out the clutter for the open house. A clean house is very easy on the eyes and buyers are actually turned off by unkempt homes. Clean every inch of the property, especially the areas that get cluttered quickly, such as the basement or the garage.

Clean the air as well and even make it fragrant with flowers or air scents. Manicure your lawn, take down clotheslines and throw your trash. Change all your linens, including your curtains and bedding. When it comes right down to the negotiations, make sure you not all the improvements you have made on the property. This way, you increase your chances of selling your home before all those cheap homes for sale in the market.

Analysis: Romney's play-it-safe strategy at risk (Reuters)

BOSTON (Reuters) ? Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is running a disciplined campaign focused on slamming President Barack Obama and promoting his own skills, but pressure could mount for a more aggressive approach as his poll numbers worsen.

This week a trio of opinion surveys showed Romney trailing Texas Governor Rick Perry, who jumped into the 2012 race less than two weeks ago and generated a blaze of mostly favorable publicity.

Romney, a former Massachusetts governor and venture capitalist, has been the nominal front-runner among Republicans so far, partly reflecting his name recognition after finishing second to John McCain in his 2008 run.

Romney's second White House run, launched in June, has been designed around almost daily attacks on Obama. His campaign appearances have been relatively scarce and balanced by a heavy fund-raising schedule.

"We've stayed focused on talking to people about why Governor Romney is the best alternative to President Obama on the most important issue facing our country: jobs and the economy. That's what this race will be about," said Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul.

The Romney campaign issues regular videos on the theme "Obama Isn't Working," which highlights high unemployment. It mocked the president's recent bus trip through the Midwest as a "Magical Misery Tour," complete with tie-dye T-shirts available for a $30 campaign pledge.

Romney has led most polls among the Republican challengers this year, but with numbers well below levels that create a sense of inevitability.

Both Gallup and Public Policy Polling on Wednesday issued national surveys of likely Republican primary voters that showed Rick Perry holding a sizable lead.

"So far he (Romney) has really played it safe. I really think that strategy can't continue with Rick Perry in the race," said Krystal Ball, a Democratic strategist and former Congressional contender in Virginia.

"If Romney is going to stay in the game, he has to take more risks."

TOO EARLY FOR PANIC?

Political scientist Charles Franklin said it was too early for Romney to panic about Perry, but his campaign needs to stay on its toes.

Romney has been polite but distant in talking about Perry. In New Hampshire, this week he termed the Texan "a very effective candidate ... maybe when the field narrows down to two or three we'll spend more time talking about each other."

"So far, the Romney strategy to not be reactive to the 'flavor of the week' is smart. But it's only in hindsight when we know if someone was a flash in the pan or not," said Franklin, a professor at the University of Wisconsin.

Indeed, the 2012 Romney campaign has been shaped by a different dynamic from the wide-open 2008 race: running against an incumbent with low approval ratings who has left many of his previous supporters disappointed.

His strategists believe voters will respond positively to Romney's business pedigree as the polar opposite of Obama.

As the leading moderate among Republican contenders, Romney also might hope that his opponents simply beat each other up.

"My sense is that Romney's strategy is based on the assumption that Bachmann, Perry and others, even Rick Santorum, will fight it out among themselves," said Donna Robinson Divine, professor of government at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts.

"Then, Romney will be able to claim that he is focusing on the real issue -- capturing the White House. It has been a sound strategy. Whether he has to change it at this point is unclear."

Divine said the danger is that Romney's campaign could lose control of the message; this week's pro-Perry opinion polls could be the start of such a trend.

The Gallup survey had Perry with 29 percent support among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. Romney was at 17 percent, down 6 points from a month ago, with Texas Congressman Ron Paul at 13 percent and Bachmann at 10 percent.

"The polls create a certain narrative that could force Romney to change tactics," said Divine.

As voting in the 2012 primaries draws closer, Romney's campaign might need to acknowledge a shift in the electorate with a sharper tone, said Ball.

In polling, Romney does better among independent leaning Republicans and moderates, but they don't typically vote in big numbers in primaries," she said.

Even compared with 2008, Republican voters are more conservative, largely because of the emergence of the Tea Party that was so influential in the 2010 mid-term elections and in the recent fractious debate over raising the U.S. debt limit.

"I think Mitt Romney really has to do some soul searching about what the Republican party is. at this point in time," Ball said. "The Republicans are looking for someone to get aggressive in attacking Obama."

Ultimately, though, strategists think Romney, who has a large campaign funding warchest, will be ready for hand-to-hand combat if he needs to.

"I suspect if he sees Perry approaching some kind of tipping point, Romney will engage him," said Divine.

Analysis: The weight of the world is on Bernanke's shoulders (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? When the Federal Reserve chairman steps up to speak in the mountains of Wyoming on Friday, he faces giant expectations to deliver a plan to steer the developed world away from another damaging recession.

He is quite alone.

European leaders are squabbling over who pays the bills for their sovereign debt crisis, leaving the European Central Bank hamstrung. Japan is in political paralysis lurching from election to election. And the world's fast-growing emerging economies -- China, India, Brazil or Russia -- prefer to criticize from the sidelines rather than take up the mantle of leadership.

In the United States, political leaders are enmeshed in a deeply divisive ideological war over the role of government, scarcely able to agree on basics of raising the debt ceiling.

As David Resler, strategist at Nomura, said bluntly of Bernanke: "He is the last hope of a desperate market."

"The public has totally lost confidence in Congress to do anything coherent or useful," said Mark Gertler, economics professor at New York University.

"By contrast, the Fed is the only major policy player that operates independently of politics and is thus just about the only government institution in which the markets have any faith," he said. "Partly for this reason and partly because of his proven skill as crisis manager, the world is looking for him to deliver."

Yet Bernanke's capacity to deliver on such heightened expectations is greatly constrained, not least by growing criticism at home from the Republican right that Fed activism is debasing the dollar.

In Phase One of the global financial crisis that began in 2007, the Fed stabilized dysfunctional financial markets by flooding the system with money, which was easy to do when it had plenty of room to slash interest rates to near zero.

In Phase Two, the Fed focused on combating deflationary pressures in 2009 and 2010 by buying up bonds to force investors into riskier assets. It succeeded.

But Phase Three, achieving lift-off for an economy that is stuck on the runway, is proving much harder -- and the tools left at the Fed's disposal are fewer with limited or even questionable impact.

Moreover, they are not designed to tackle the complexity of the challenges that plague the global economy.

Unlike 2007-2009, the epicenter of the current financial market turmoil lies not in the United States but in Europe, and it is government balance sheets not banks that are causing upheaval. Europe's fragmented political leadership has proven itself ill equipped to address the government debt strains quickly, and there is little that Bernanke can do about that.

"Part of the problem in the past two weeks that led to the excess volatility in markets was the realization that no one is in charge, and that puts a lot of weight on Bernanke and the central bankers," said Kenneth Rogoff, a professor of economics at Harvard University.

NOT 2008

Three years ago, the financial technocrats were able to swoop in and deliver a strategy to save the world from financial crisis.

Bernanke, the soft-spoken professor of the Great Depression, and Hank Paulson, the swash-buckling Wall Street titan turned U.S. Treasury secretary under President George W. Bush, worked alongside Group of 20 colleagues to unleash roughly $5 trillion in rescue measures.

They slashed interest rates, bought up bad debt, pumped capital into banks and launched government stimulus programs. Financial markets recovered and growth took off.

They were temporary fixes. The hope was that economic growth would reach lift-off speed and become self-sustaining for long enough to pay off the accumulated debts and bailout costs.

Instead, growth is stumbling in Europe and the United States. The bad debt that piled up in banks was transferred to government balance sheets, pushing out budget deficits which markets now are less willing to finance in already overburdened countries.

Rogoff said the current economic problems stem from government leaders failing to confront the harsh reality of how long it would take to work through a deep debt crisis.

"At first they took the easy route," he said. "They temporized and thought it was a good strategy at the time -- guaranteeing everything, bailing out the financial system, put the problems on ice and hope that future growth would ameliorate the problem.

"But it was a very risky one because it deepened the financial crisis. Their approach is coming back and boomeranging in that because the debt problems are not going away, they are getting worse, they cannot keep kicking the can down the road. The ability to temporize is fading fast," he said.

The rocky climate leaves Bernanke under pressure to lay out a grand plan.

He has given no indication that he will deliver solutions on Friday when he addresses an annual central bank conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Instead, he is expected to downgrade his economic assessment, affirm that an easy monetary policy remains firmly in place and explain the risks and benefits of the various balance sheet options the Fed could use, should economic conditions worsen in the months ahead.

Mohamed El-Erian, chief executive of Pacific Investment Management Co, operator of the world's largest bond fund, said Bernanke would be wise to go one step further. He could explain that any monetary steps to be truly effective should be reinforced by government measures -- namely a comprehensive package of structural reforms such as an overhaul of the tax code and labor market, infrastructure investment, pension and healthcare reforms.

Bernanke could use his speech not only to lay out monetary options but also be the "warm-up" act for President Barack Obama's unveiling of his jobs package in September. He could convince politicians they must join in lifting growth.

"Anything beyond this would run the risk of the Fed building another costly bridge to nowhere." El-Erian said in an economics blog on Thursday.

Hurricane Irene barrels toward US as Caribbean islands take stock of damage

Hurricane Irene is now headed for North Carolina after pummeling Caribbean island nations from the Bahamas to the Dominican Republic, causing some $3.1 billion in damage.

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

Hurricane Irene roared toward the East Coast on Thursday morning with the potential to wreak the same havoc it left behind in the Caribbean.

As communities up and down the East Coast braced for the first major hurricane to reach their shores in years, Caribbean countries began cleaning up from the deadly and expensive storm.

From the tiny islands in the Eastern Caribbean, where British billionaire Richard Branson's mansion burned to the ground, to the Bahamas, where it pummeled small outlying islands, the first hurricane of the 2011 season was a destructive one.

The US-based Kinetic Analysis Corp. estimated that the damage to the Caribbean could be worth as much as $3.1 billion.

While the damage is tame compared to past hurricanes that have ravaged the storm-prone region, clean up and rebuilding in the hardest hit areas will be arduous.

Storm's path

Among the islands first hit were the British Virgin Islands, where Virgin Group founder Richard Branson's mansion on miniscule Necker Island went up in flames after being hit by lightning.

Hollywood actress Kate Winslet was reportedly inside at the time and is credited with helping to save Mr. Branson's mother.

?Many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90-year-old mum out of the main house to safety,? Branson wrote on his blog. ?All family and friends are well, which in the end is all that really matters.?

The storm would later turn deadly, however.

In Puerto Rico, at least one person was killed and roughly 500 were left homeless. In neighboring Dominican Republic, authorities said at least three people died, several more were missing and that 37,743 people had fled their homes.

Emergency workers in the Dominican Republic maintained red alerts ? the highest warning level ? for 24 of its provinces as rain continued to fall, cresting rivers and flooding homes.

Floods ravage Dominican Republic

?The danger from this storm is ongoing, even if the hurricane has gone,? says Jos? Luis Germ?n, deputy director of the country?s Emergency Operations Center. Communications with than 85 communities had been severed by the storm, he said, meaning that the number of people affected would likely rise after the full extent of the damage was revealed.

Several communities saw widespread flooding as rivers overflowed.

?There were homes completely covered in water,? says Rafael Rodriguez, who lives in San Cristobal in western Dominican Republic. ?The streets are flooded. And the water was still coming.?

Hurricane Irene tame compared to others

Despite the substantial damage it caused, Hurricane Irene was not nearly the most disastrous for the Caribbean ? a region accustomed to brutal storms.

History books tell us that the Great Hurricane of 1780 killed roughly 22,000 people, pounding the Caribbean for a week. That storm predated modern record keeping.

Since the 1850s, when record keeping began, the Caribbean?s deadliest storm struck in 1930. Hurricane San Zenon, also known as the Dominican Republic Hurricane, killed at least 2,000 people and injured an estimated 15,000, according to the country?s National Meteorological Office. The storm leveled the capital, Santo Domingo.

Irene?s impact on the US is expected to be widespread. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center predicts the storm will hit North Carolina on Saturday and continue north through New England. The storm?s exact path is yet to be seen. But even communities 70 miles from the hurricane?s center could feel hurricane-force winds.

The costliest hurricane in US history, by far, was Hurricane Katrina, which, in 2005, caused $81 billion in damage and killed at least 1,836 people.

When gambling on sports generally or horse racing particularly, it's no surprise for you to understand that hundreds of bettors lose their gambles. But didn't you question why so many folk lose at gambling on sports despite the indisputable fact that sports gambling provide better chances of winning? Some individuals say that it is really because of poor handicapping. But while this can be true, for me it's not the exact reason that bettors lose as there are countless hundreds of people that are expert handicappers who still lose their bunch of cash all the time due to the their poor money management abilities and their poor trained.

So if you are serious about achievement in gambling on horse racing, then I think it is terribly vital for you to make plan and remain trained. As the cash managing experts regularly say, it's best to line up your own goals, your technique and use a methodology or system.

You must set up your ambitions as money limit that you want to earn. Always remember that when betting on sports, one should bet only with cash that he can stand to lose. To put it simply, never bet with cash that you can't afford to lose or you do not have for that can only bring you tons of issues in the end.

As quickly as you have set up your gambling goals, you need to then start defining the gambling techniques you may take. One actual winning technique I Am familiar about is the so-called betting on singles only. In the opinion of some expert gamblers and handicappers, it is highly important that when gambling on sports you avoid accumulators. Maybe one main support for that is the fact that your possibilities for winning at sports gambling are decreasing with every game added in accumulator. So at the start of the game or the betting season, try to set up your common betting amount and only bet most of your singles. Then, when you find yourself winning at a selected gambling season, do not increase stakes. This is true also when you're in losing run either.

Eventually, betting on horse racing needs a time. So if you find yourself unlucky run when betting on sports and it seems that you cannot win, think that maybe it is time for you to take a little rest. Consider not to bet for a week or 2. As far as I know, this'll help you obtain an improved view of things. Also, think that in sports gambling not all seasons are in your favour. You really should know that most punters increase their bets each time they lose couple of gambles because they believe that they can?t miss all of the time. The truth of the case is, that's not a truth for all times. The point is, do not be greedy.

AMD Revs Up Its Fusion APU Chips (NewsFactor)

Advanced Micro Devices is rolling out updated versions of the company's Fusion C-series and E-series chips that promise better high-definition graphics, more processing horsepower and longer battery life in next-generation laptops and desktop PCs.

The new accelerated processor unit (APU) offerings also integrate DisplayPort ++ support to enable computer owners to connect their machines to a wide array of compatible monitors and TVs.

Combining the central processing unit (CPU) and graphics processing unit (GPU) onto a single die, AMD's Fusion C-series and E-series chips have sold well since their debut in January of this year, according to the chipmaker.

AMD has shipped nearly 12 million APUs to date, and sold more than 5 million C-series and E-Series APUs in this year's second quarter alone.

AMD Vice President Chris Cloran said consumers were looking for fast and brilliant HD streaming video, sharp photos, lifelike gaming through powerful DirectX11-capable, discrete-level graphics, and all-day battery life.

"That's what AMD Fusion APUs deliver," Cloran said. "With these new APUs, we're bringing premium features to entry-level products that let users get a richer computing experience."

Extended Battery Life

The semiconductor industry's move to heterogeneous computing architectures -- under which calculations more suited for the GPU are offloaded from the CPU -- has already provided significant performance improvements and faster computing for many applications.

By combining both the CPU and GPU on a single die, AMD has been able to reduce the data-processing bottlenecks that occurred with dual-chip designs.

AMD Chief Marketing Officer Nigel Dessau said the company's family of Fusion APUs already had helped AMD realize a 57 percent year-on-year increase in notebook design wins from OEM partners such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sony, Samsung and Toshiba.

For example, the Lenovo ThinkPad x120e featuring AMD's original Fusion E-series APU "was one of the top selling commercial notebooks among distributors targeting small and medium businesses, exceeding demand forecasts," Dessau wrote in a blog.

With the new C and E series chip upgrades, one goal is to further enhance the performance of hardware-accelerated software offerings such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Flash Player and Internet Explorer 9 in netbooks, laptops and desktop PCs, AMD said. Another aim is to extend battery life in ultra-thin notebook designs.

According to AMD, Fusion C-Series devices are capable of delivering up to 10.5 hours of resting battery life, while E-series chips extend battery life to a maximum of 12 hours. Additionally, AMD's refreshed APU lineup now offers support for DDR3 1333 memory chips, which consume at least 15 percent less power in comparison with standard voltage DDR3 devices while also reducing latency.

Video Enhancements

AMD's upgraded Fusion chips offer support for DisplayPort ++ -- a royalty-free digital display interface standard primarily used to connect a video source to computer monitors and television sets. That ensures that machines integrating AMD's new APUs are capable of directly emitting single-link DVI or HDMI signals.

Moreover, the refreshed Fusion C-series and E-series chips support the requisite HDMI 1.4a connections for enabling consumers to view 3D snapshots and 3D home video on their 3D-enabled TVs and displays. The HDMI 1.4a specification released in March of last year adds two additional mandatory 3D formats for broadcast content to the older HDMI 1.4 standard, which did not offer support for 3D.

Computers based on AMD's refreshed APUs -- which are identifiable from their "VISION Technology from AMD" or "HD Internet" stickers -- are available beginning Monday from leading PC manufacturers, the chip maker said.

Obama urges Gaddafi loyalists lay down arms (Reuters)

CHILMARK, Massachusetts (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama called on Monday for Muammar Gaddafi to end the bloodshed in Libya as pockets of his loyalist forces continued to fight.

"Although it is clear Gaddafi's rule is over, he still has the opportunity to reduce bloodshed by explicitly relinquishing power to the people of Libya and calling for those forces that continue to fight to lay down their arms," Obama said.

While rebels hunted for Gaddafi in Tripoli, some forces loyal to the autocratic leader were fighting on fiercely.

"This is not over yet," Obama warned in a statement from the farm where his family is vacationing on an island off the coast from Boston.

Vowing the United States would be a friend and partner to help a democratic Libya emerge in the post-Gaddafi era, Obama also cautioned the Libyan opposition against acts of revenge for the four decades of Gaddafi's autocratic rule.

"True justice will not come from reprisals and violence. It will come from reconciliation and a Libya that allows its citizens to determine their own destiny," he said.

Although he did not go into details about what help the United States would be prepared to offer Libya, Obama said a top priority would be humanitarian aid to the wounded.

He did spell out that U.S. engagement would continue to be part of a multinational effort and praised the role NATO had played in the campaign to oust Gaddafi.

"NATO has once again proven it is the most capable alliance in the world and its strength comes from both its firepower and the strength of out democratic ideals," Obama said.

Small molecules shed light on cancer therapies

Tuesday, August 23, 2011

Patients suffering from an aggressive brain cancer will benefit from the results of a University of Illinois study that could advance the development of targeted gene therapies and improve prognosis.

"We have advanced the understanding of the role of microRNAs on glioblastoma multiforme, a deadly brain cancer, by studying the networks between the microRNAs and their target genes associated with different stages of cancer development and progression," said Kristin Delfino, a U of I doctoral candidate in animal science with a focus in genetics and bioinformatics.

What exactly are microRNAs? microRNAs are small, non-coding RNA molecules that regulate the expression of genes such as oncogenes or tumor suppressor genes. U of I researchers used a novel approach to identify the simultaneous association between tens of thousands of microRNAs, target genes, and glioblastoma progression and survival.

Delfino integrated clinical information such as race, gender, therapy, survival, and cancer stage from 253 patients together with genome-wide microRNA and gene expression data.

"We looked at the big picture and how microRNAs work together," Delfino said. "When you look at a single microRNA alone, it can seem significant. But when you evaluate it in the context of all other microRNAs, some turn out to be more significant and others may not be as significant as they appear on their own. The systems biology approach that we implemented is critical for understanding the gene pathways influencing cancer."

The study evaluated 534 microRNAs together, unlike the typical method of studying one at a time. They confirmed 25 microRNAs previously associated with glioblastoma survival and identified 20 other microRNAs associated with initiation or growth of other cancer types such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer and gastric adenocarcinoma.

"These findings suggest common pathways that can be targeted with similar drugs already developed and tested for other cancers," said Sandra Rodriguez Zas, co-researcher and U of I professor of animal science and bioinformatics.

In addition, researchers found that some of the microRNA biomarkers of survival are personalized, Rodriguez Zas said. This means that they are particularly useful for patients of a specific race, gender or therapy. Other microRNAs are equally effective regardless of the clinical conditions of the patient.

"These biomarkers can serve as the basis to dig deeper into cancer studies," Delfino said. "Cancer affects us all in one way or another. Unfortunately, we still don't know how it's caused, what takes place when it is caused and how to cure it. But these biomarkers give us guidance into developing specific gene therapies to target glioblastoma."

Today patients can easily and cheaply be screened for microRNA and target gene levels, Rodriguez Zas said.

"Based on our research, that information can be used to select the most effective therapy and develop prognosis strategies," Rodriguez-Zas said.

This study, "Therapy-, Gender- and Race-specific microRNA Markers, Target Genes and Networks Related to Glioblastoma Recurrence and Survival," was published in Cancer Genomics & Proteomics. Co-researchers include Kristin Delfino, Nicola Serao, Bruce Southey and Sandra Rodriguez Zas, all of the U of I.

Come On Guys~Divorce Really Isn't a Surprise

By Teagin Maddox
The official guide to Domestic Violence and Abusive Relationships

Your rating: None

Divorce is always good for women, if not right away, then eventually. I say this because women typically do not divorce on a whim, they do so after years sacrificing their wants and needs for the benefit of others, until they finally learn that unhappiness is not par for the course.

Women take unhappiness more seriously than men because unhappiness takes a bigger toll on us. When women put in too much effort for extended periods of time, we are the ones who end up drained, irritable, sick, and empty; lonely marriages deplete women while men hang on, happy with just being comfortable and content enough to stay, even after intimacy drifts off. Women won?t do that, we only tolerate so much unhappiness, boredom, and disconnectedness before we finally feel alone in the relationship, and then the idea of leaving isn?t such a big deal.

When women finally bail out, it?s after realizing unhappiness is a symptom of bigger problems in the marriage. By then, we may have hinted, suggested, bitched, complained, waited, forgave, forgot, gave second, third, and fourth chances, gave more sex, gave less sex-or no sex, considered separation, threatened divorce, gave ultimatums, turned off, tuned out, and given up. It doesn?t happen overnight or all of a sudden, and it isn?t a surprise~which is how many men explain it.

Once we actually leave, it appears to be easy for us to move on and we are guilt free about the decision, and strong. We don?t look back because we left after a barrage of missed signals and unanswered cries for change; the mourning of the relationship, doesn?t happen at the end for women, it happened slowly over a long period of time during the marriage, so divorce represents a renewal for women, and a relief. For men, the opposite is true; men feel blindsided and even fall into a downward spiral of trying to figure out what the hell happened, and when it happened. The truth is, they didn?t meet their ladies at the half way point consistently, or at all.

After perhaps years of unmatched energy and unsustained fervor, women want to feel alive again~preferably with our husbands, but if they aren?t going to join us, we will go find life elsewhere, because we have to; it isn?t personal. Divorce allows women to salvage the rest of our lives and it catapults us into second (or even first) careers~and it puts us into the arms of men who see us, chase us, like us, and love us well~or, it gives us a much needed break and some down time, maybe for the first time in years. Either way, it feels like we won.

angelo - Teens, kids are surprise drivers of triathlon growth ...

When the three teenagers braked their bikes in the parking lot of a Southwest Portland health club one recent afternoon, they already had done more in one half-day than many kids do all summer.

James Myers, 18, of Forest Grove, and twins Ciaran and Conor Smythe, 17, of Happy Valley had muscled through a 3,000-meter swim and 35-mile bike ride. Yet the workout was just a sliver of their training for triathlons, the swim-bike-run events made famous by the grueling Ironman races that include a full marathon.

Their pursuit might seem extreme -- the Smythes will compete against adults Sunday in the Portland Triathlon -- but the Portland-area teens are far from alone. Nationwide, nearly 25 percent of registered triathletes are kids between age 7 and 17, according to USA Triathlon.

As shorter-distance events expand the sport beyond its core of 20- and 30-something men, kids who watched their parents compete in triathlon's nascent days of the 1980s and '90s now are racing themselves. Triathlon also is pulling in high-achieving teens who use it for cross-training or for a new challenge.

"You really have to go out and look for it," Myers said. "Triathlon's not just something you fall into."

Steady growth

Annual memberships to USA Triathlon, the sport's governing body, have more than doubled since 2005, to 134,000 last year. More than 33,000 of those members are kids, a 140 percent increase in that same span.

Many kids taste triathlon in the increasingly common micro-events held on the same day or weekend as adult races. Organizers of central Oregon's MAC Dash triathlon in Madras last year, for instance, offered a mini-race for kids 10 and under (two-pool-widths swim, quarter-mile bike ride and 500-foot run) and were stunned when 60 turned out.

Today's kids have grown up with triathlon as a sport in the Olympics -- it was added in 2000 -- and seen triathletes on TV. An effort is under way to make it an NCAA-sanctioned college sport.

High-level competition can be prohibitively expensive, requiring $6,000 bikes and thousands more in race fees and travel costs. But kids' races often welcome a motley of mountain bikes, beach swimsuits and shoes that would be at home piled up in the front hallway, race organizers say.

Caitlin Begg, a 17-year-old in Glen Rock, N.J., is a former swimmer and lacrosse player who left those sports to compete in triathlon. In January she launched an organization called Young Tri to connect young triathletes. It boasts members from 42 states and 13 countries.

"They're all motivated, strong people," Begg said, "and that makes it a close-knit group."

Standouts in Oregon

Oregon, with its rainy weather and independent streak, lags some states in triathlon participation but has its share of outstanding young triathletes.

Lukas Verzbicas, a two-time national high school cross-country champion from Orland Hills, Ill., has signed to run for Oregon but is postponing his arrival in Eugene to compete in triathlon's world championships Sept. 10-11 in Beijing.

Winter Vinecki of Salem last year won the 12-year-old girls' division of IronKids, a race series owned by the IronMan parent company.

Like many other young triathletes Winter is a hyper-achiever, recently gaining acceptance into a program that will allow her as a middle schooler to take classes online from professors at Stanford. She will use the free time her new schedule allows to continue triathlons, which she uses as a platform to raise money to fight prostate cancer, the disease that three years ago claimed her father.

"She keeps it short," said Winter's mother, Dawn Estelle. "She's not going to do an IronMan until she's 18, because she wants to continue to set a good example for other kids."

Defending participation

Race director Steve Cash recalled seeing 10-year-old Boston Smith on the registration list for the Rolf Prima Tri at the Grove in Cottage Grove and picking up the phone.

"Don't take this wrong," Cash recalls saying to Angie Smith, "but I'm calling about your son. Who is he and why is he competing in my triathlon?"

Angie explained that Boston was up to racing alongside adults in triathlon's "sprint" distance -- 750-meter swim, 12-mile bike and 5-kilometer run. Indeed, Boston finished with the men's pack.

Skepticism about triathlons for kids ignores how many of them spend their summers, said IronKids director Michelle Payette. ?

"We'd all get on our bikes, we'd ride down to the lake, we'd swim like crazy for an hour, we'd get out, we'd play tag and run around," Payette said of her childhood. "We were doing triathlons every day."

Estelle, who works as an OB/GYN, acknowledged that people sometimes question her daughter's participation in such a taxing sport but notes that Kenyan marathoners who ran miles to school every day didn't seem to suffer ill effects.

"The childhood obesity epidemic that's occurring, that is far more damaging than what Winter is doing to her body," Estelle said. "When we tell people that, they quickly quiet down."

A Review Of Workers' Compensation Insurance | Asa Grill

Just before Workers? Comp. took place there was no insurance coverage to safeguard an injured worker. An injured worker is anyone who is employed and is injured on the job. It will also cover an employee if he was hurt during his lunch hour, while running an errand for the company. In past times employers were accountable for the cost of all treatments and wage compensation. This caused many employers to reluctantly not report the injury.

The worker also had to prove that the injury was caused at work by an employers fault. Due to the amount of injured workers yearly and industrial accidents legislation had to make provisions for the injured worker. It relieved the employer from being liable except if there was negligence, and it also compensated the employee for wage loss due to the injury, and medical coverage. This coverage also includes rehabilitation to get the employee back to work.

There are 2 ordinances for Workers? Compensation; Federal employees apply to the those working for the government. State employees compensation are for state and private businesses employers and employees, the laws vary from state to state.

When a worker is injured at work, he must report the incident to his supervisor and carry out an incident report, the employer will then send the employee to a clinic or hospital to be treated. Once at the inpatient or outpatient facility the injured worker will then ought to complete another form whether or not this was the first place of treating, all records are crucial for the appointment. The employer and clinic will submit the reports to the workers? compensation office and then an insurance claim adjuster would be assigned to the case for review and approval, of medical care and compensation.

Whenever the employee is seen by the assigned physician or physical therapist a report will be sent to the Workers? compensation adjuster, as to keep an eye on the care. All states vary on the time permitted to report and injury. The worker may or may not have the capacity to returned to work as light duty, light duty restricted, partial disability, or permanent disability.

Indian activist Anna Hazare to launch public fast (Reuters)

NEW DELHI (Reuters) ? A popular Indian anti-graft campaigner won a bitter fight against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to hold a two-week public fast from Thursday, stepping up the pressure on the government to show a restive nation it can tackle rampant corruption.

Anna Hazare, a 74-year-old Gandhian-style campaigner, was arrested on Tuesday, hours ahead of a planned fast until death for tougher laws against graft, sparking nationwide protests and putting the government on the backfoot as he stayed in jail.

"None of us is looking at this as a victory," Kiran Bedi, a former police officer and widely respected figure for her anti-graft drive, told Times Now television after helping negotiate permission for Hazare's public fast in the capital.

"We are not playing games. We are doing this to move the country forward," Bedi, who had herself also been briefly arrested.

The government, facing spontaneous protests by tens of thousands of people across Indian cities and villages, was forced to release Hazare, but he refused to leave the Tihar jail until he won the right to lead an anti-corruption protest.

Crowds outside the jail erupted in joy at news of the deal, reached early on Thursday shouting his name "Anna" and "we are with you," singing, playing guitar and waving the Indian flag. He is expected to go to the protest ground at 3 pm (5:30 a.m. ET).

A medical team is on standby to monitor Hazare's health, and a sharp deterioration could further worsen the crisis for the government.

A beleaguered Singh and his government had appeared at a loss over how to end the standoff and failing to grasp the mounting anger from India's growing urban middle class.

"It exposes how far removed the Manmohan Singh-led government is from popular sentiment. Were elections to be held today, the UPA (Congress party-led coalition) would have struggled to hold on to power," The Times of India said in an editorial. The next national polls are in 2014.

The arrest and sudden about-turn to release Hazare appeared to confirm a widespread feeling Singh's government is cornered, clumsy and too riddled with scandal to govern Asia's third-largest economy effectively.

The focus now turns from the arrest to the fight against corruption, proving headaches for the government for weeks to come. Critics of Hazare say his fast amounts to blackmailing the government and is undemocratic.

A weak political opposition means that the government should still survive the crisis, but it could further dim the prospect for economic reforms that have already been held back by policy paralysis and a raft of corruption scandals.

The squat and slight rural social activist fasted in prison as tens of thousands of his followers on Wednesday gathered at key locations in Delhi, including outside the jail, and at the symbolic India Gate.

His arrest, followed by the brief arrests of about 2,600 followers in the capital alone, shocked many in a country with strong memories of Gandhi's independence battles against colonial rule with fasts and non-violent protests.

CANDLE-LIGHT VIGILS

Spurred on by messages on social networking sites, thousands of people held peaceful candle-light vigils through the night from the capital Delhi to the IT hub Hyderabad.

Singh, 78, who is widely criticised as out of touch, dismissed the fast by Hazare as "totally misconceived," sparking outrage as lawmakers cried "shame."

"We don't have faith in our government," said Sujeet, a young software engineer from the IT city of Gurgaon, as he protested at the tourist site of India Gate in the capital. "We are living in a democracy but only in letter, not in spirit."

Many of the crowd were young, with rucksacks on their backs, some with their faces painted. Others were older, decked out in outfits as worn by the bespectacled Hazare, with his trademark white cap and kurta, a long-time social activist who is often compared to independence leader Mahatma Gandhi.

Demonstrations are part of daily life in the towns and cities of India, a country of 1.2 billion people made up of a myriad of castes, religions and classes. But spontaneous and widespread protests are rare and the scale of this week's outpouring of public fury has taken the government by surprise.

Hazare became the unlikely thorn in the side of the Congress party-led coalition when he went on hunger strike in April. He called off that fast after the government promised to introduce a bill creating an anti-corruption ombudsman.

The so-called Lokpal legislation was presented in early August, but activists slammed the draft version as toothless because the prime minister and judges were exempt from probes.

Corruption plagues all walks of life but over the past year an increasing number of company executives, opposition politicians, judges and ministers have been brought down. Still, Transparency International rates India in 87 place on the most corruption countries according to a 2010 survey.

"Corruption is such an integral part of Indian society that the chief economic adviser to the government, Kaushik Basu, has suggested legalizing the payment of bribes. He received enthusiastic corporate support, which is to be expected since the largest bribe-payers in India are corporations," wrote Manu Joseph, editor of Indian news magazine Open, in a New York Times piece.

Video game controllers hit the real battlefield

Year after year, the venerable PlayStation controller has proven itself the ideal tool for fighting Nazis, zombies and all manner of aliens. But while gamers have used the device to slay virtual foes, the video game controller has served double duty operating real-life weapons against flesh-and-blood adversaries.

Right now, military-grade game controllers nearly indistinguishable from their civilian counterparts allow soldiers to operate cameras, fly unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and even fire remote-controlled machine guns.

Here at the AUSVI Unmanned Systems conference, a number of companies have put their martial version of the civilian gaming controller on display. The military version of these controllers features rugged components and sealed cases to protect the fragile electronics from dust, water and general abuse (what's known as "grunt-proofing"). They sell for thousands of dollars, but still use common formats such as USB to transmit data.

"The U.S. Army recognized that today's warfighter is an 18- to 20-year-old with PC gaming experience. They wanted a controller with the form factor of a video game controller, but built to withstand a military environment," said Walter Freed, a business manager with Ultra Electronics, the company that makes the controllers. "If I plugged this into a laptop, it would recognize it as a gaming controller."

Known as "dismounted controllers" to distinguish them from the mounted controllers used to, say, swivel a tank turret, these game device clones most often replicate the form of a PlayStation controller, with a directional pad on the left, two joysticks in the middle, and several buttons on the right. The FMCU Ruggedized Controller made by Ultra Electronics even features an optional screen, through which an operator can see through the eyes of a UAV or gun-mounted camera.

The Army originally tried to use commercially available game controllers, but found that they couldn't withstand the rigors of military life, Freed told InnovationNewsDaily. Solving the problem involved taking the same form factor and proofing it against weather, moisture, physical abuse, secondary projectiles and the extreme changes in pressure associated with falling out of a plane during an airdrop. Additionally, the military still distrusts digital systems for lethal uses, requiring any controller used to fire a machine gun to feature a wire connection directly to the weapon.

Beyond providing a time-tested platform for digital control, these dismounted controllers can significantly reduce training time among a population of soldiers largely familiar with their operation. After all, when you've vanquished demon hordes and brought down galactic empires, driving a robot truck seems innocuous and simple by comparison.

"It's intuitive, and the guys who are using these are all gamers," said Kevin Allen, director of research and technology at Esterline Control Systems. "You can take a guy down at Fort Bliss using a (land-based robot), and he can learn to use this controller in 10 minutes."

Yet despite their utility, the age of these controllers may soon come to a close, thanks to the same kind of technological familiarity that spurred their development in the first place. Today's new soldiers, while still avid gamers, have become accustomed to an even higher level of control and interaction, thus requiring the development of a new generation of dismounted controllers that resemble iPhones or Wii nunchucks more than an old Nintendo gamepad.

?I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this theorem, which this doodle is too small to contain.?

Both are references to 17th century mathematician Pierre de Fermat, whose 410th birthday is being celebrated today.

A glib marginal comment

Apart from laying the foundations of calculus and modern number theory, Fermat is best known for a small note that he scribbled in the margin of his personal copy of the book Arithmetica by Diophantus:

?It is impossible to separate a cube into two cubes, or a fourth power into two fourth powers, or in general, any power higher than the second, into two like powers,? he wrote.

However, Fermat apparently ran out of writing space, and concluded without further elaboration:

?I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this margin is too narrow to contain.?

The profound simplicity of Fermat?s conjecture ?formulated as xn + yn ? zn [n>2]? piqued the curiosity of generations of mathematicians and historians alike, who sought to find his ?marvelous proof?.

Unfortunately, despite Fermat?s glib marginal comment, there is no historical record or documentation of his proof ?leaving succeeding generations of mathematicians to independently formulate their own.

Did he, or didn?t he?

In 1995, mathematician Andrew Wiles published a 100-page paper that finally proved Fermat?s Last Theorem. The work took him seven years to complete.

It took 358 years before this proof was finally found to what the Guinness Book of World Records had called ?the world?s most difficult math problem? up to that time.

?It may well be that Fermat realised that his remarkable proof was wrong, since all his other theorems were stated and restated in challenge problems sent to other mathematicians,? explain J J O?Connor and E F Robertson of the Scotland University School of Mathematics and Statistics.

And yet, despite the problem?s conclusion, mathematicians around the world still wonder: What exactly was Fermat thinking? Did he have a simpler, more elegant proof in mind ?or did he inadvertently mastermind one of the biggest pranks in history? ?

Who Uses Online Dating Sites

Who uses online dating sites? Who are they looking for? What are they looking for? Is everyone looking for love? The common themes for everyone using online dating sites are companionship, friendship, romance, sex, and lasting relationships. To a degree what one looks for online depends upon age.

Younger people (teens to late twenties) commonly use online dating as an extension of their normal social life. This has a lot to do with this age group being familiar with and comfortable with the electronic tools of the age. Many younger people are seeking enjoyment and often do not start out looking for a lasting relationship. They want friends, companions, lovers, and a good time. This is what an older generation called ?playing the field? and in the internet age the field extends into cyberspace. With time this generation looks for lasting relationships as well.

People in their thirties and forties are often starting over. They are commonly divorced, often raising children on their own. For this group the internet provides an excellent means for the too busy person to meet other people. This group is often very sure about what traits they do not want in a friend, companion, lover, or lifetime soul mate. Online dating sites provide this group with a useful means of sorting out rejecting the rejects without the trouble of a face to face date. This group is often ?once bitten and twice shy.? Unfortunately this means that many in their thirties and forties are afraid of starting over again and use the internet more as a means of avoiding relationships than as a means of finding them. Who uses online dating sites in this group? Many do. It is simply that some want to find a mate and others might just be hiding.

Who uses online dating sites among the fifty and older set? Lots of people do. It is not only the young that have embraced the internet although this group typically needs bifocals to type with two thumbs on their Blackberry. For those willing to embrace the technology and the opportunity online dating can help the mature adult find a friend, companion, or lover after they have lost a spouse or long term friend. For those who have not been in the dating ?game? for a generation or more there can be a sense of safety in first communicating by email and then by chat messages. Although this age group is looking for love and companionship it is a more than generation wiser and more mature than younger online dating site users. This is reflected in the fact that these folks are often looking for friendship, kindness, reliability, and other lasting qualities.

But, no matter who uses online dating sites the general results are the same. People search for someone compatible. People meet. They develop relationships or they start out all over again. The use of the internet gives everyone more options to socialize and find the right person. So, who uses online dating sites? Pretty much everyone does.

Online Business Networking ? Is Linkedin a Good Place to Generate ...

Online Business Networking ? Is Linkedin a Good Place to Generate MLM Leads?

In this piece we recommend an approach for using social business networking to grow your MLM business. We specifically discuss one of the best online business networking sites: Linkedin. Linkedin is currently the most popular business and professional networking website. The advice in this discussion would also apply to other business networking sites and business models.

Linkedin is a free of charge business networking website used by many professionals to share information and for networking. A premium membership is available to expand your networking opportunities. There are now more than 47 million members in 200 countries that participate in Linkedin, including executives from all Fortune 500 Companies. The average household income of Linkedin members was 9,000 at the time of this writing.

The Linkedin profile has features for listing your job history and recommendations from employers, coworkers, clients, and other professional contacts. The profile is used by employers and clients so they can easily locate the best available resources for filling employment and consultant requirements. In addition, Linkedin includes an important attribute for group discussion and sharing: LInkedin Groups. Linkedin Groups are established to facilitate discussion and information sharing in areas of common interest. The discussions are quite focused and helpful to very specialized business needs.

Facebook and Twitter are also great for social and business networking, but Linkedin is usually superior for finding MLM prospects, since it is generally populated by a different type of individual, including professionals and many entrepreneurs. These individuals can be ideal prospects for your MLM business. In order to most effectively reach these prospects, what methods work best on LinkedIn?

It is essential to establish a credible profile. Your professional experience and recommendations are important in order to be taken seriously in this community. Recommendations are very important to enhance and verify your profile content. And, a professional photo is crucial.

Linkedin ?Groups? are a effective feature of LinkedIn that can be leveraged for your business, mainly by uplifting your own ?value? as a networker, but also by exposing you to thousands of prospects. The most successful Internet marketers are also the ones that contribute at the highest level to the Groups that they are part of. As you contribute more effectively, and provide helpful information to a Group, you will build relationships, and eventually establish contacts for growing your MLM business.

LinkedIn Groups are monitored and controlled much more than those on Facebook. In order to join a Group, you must first submit an application to the Group owner, who will most likely check out your profile to validate your knowledge about the subject matter at hand. Group owners are also much more inclined to remove postings and even your membership to their Group if you abuse your membership. Direct reference to your business opportunity or MLM company, is considered self-promotion and will be the fastest way to be deleted from a Group

The value of your participation in a Group will determine your effectiveness in making connections and eventually turning these connections into leads for your enterprise. Although we put the spotlight, in particular, on MLM business leads, networking in Linkedin Groups will be advantageous regardless of your business type or model. Consultants, in particular, can also generate business leads from their group participation, resulting in consulting engagements. Network marketing is a very real match for members in Linkedin Groups, although paradoxically, network marketing should not be addressed directly in the group context.
