Reading, writing and rocking out? KlabLab uses music videos to help get kids excited about learning

(KlabLab.com)It's no secret that math, science and history are three of the least popular subjects for kids in school. And when students and teachers don't have the passion, enthusiasm or budget to support a well-rounded education, everyone suffers.

Those very challenges are what inspired Joe O'Loughlin and Dave Haberman to create KlabLab, a free program designed to create collaborative in-classroom lessons that use contemporary music videos to help students excel at a wide variety of subjects they might otherwise not be excited about.

"Our mission is to bring creativity back into education in the classroom," O'Loughlin told Yahoo News. "We want to work directly with teachers and students in the education process."

In this first video, watch how KlabLab worked with California students to create an entertaining and modern music video about cellular structure:

Being both musicians and educators themselves, the pair have embarked on a Sound of Knowledge Tour of California schools. They even have their own tour bus, which they are using to engage students and teachers directly.

"I managed to get my own tour bus, which is definitely a bucket-list item for me," Haberman joked in an interview with Yahoo News. "We decked it out, created a mobile recording studio. It's a symbol of the revolution, our flagship."

When KlabLab meets up with students and educators, the program works with them on creating their own music performances that use beats lyrics and melodies reflective of contemporary music the students are downloading from the Internet and listening to on their headphones. Depending on how engaged the students and teachers are able to get in the process, the end result can range from a MP3 of the performance to a full-fledged music video.

"Because it is so ingrained in the students' culture, we felt that music would be our tool to connect with the students," O'Loughlin said. "We think it's one of the more important ways, a powerful connection tool."

In this video, "Pemdas," KlabLab worked with students to create a video explaining the order of operations in solving mathematical equations:

O'Loughlin and Haberman then take the music to their "super producer" Doug Allen, who handles all of the musical production efforts, transforming the students' efforts into a polished and professional-looking product. Allen is also a co-founder of KlabLab, assisting Haberman in the classroom and plays a major role on the technology side of the organization as well.

"In essence, we're fooling the students into writing a report and delivering it orally," Haberman added. We've had students write a song, then stay after school until after 5 p.m. to finish. Voluntarily."

It was the combination of background in both music and education that inspired the pair to create something as unique as KlabLab.

Before helping to create KlabLab, O'Loughlin received a Master's in Education from the U.S. International University in San Diego, Calif. After finishing school, he was a part-time high school teacher before transitioning into a business career. But he's also been a drummer since age 12 and continues to play in several San Francisco Bay Area bands. And now, his main duties with KlabLab involve building the organization's educational partnerships and maintaining its online presence.

"The most important thing is we're approaching this from a boots-on-the-ground approach," he said. "We're seeing what works and encouraging the voices of students and teachers."

Meanwhile, Haberman, who leads KlabLab's song writing and in-classroom engagement, was also already combining his dual passions for education and music.

Before joining KlabLab last year, he was serving as a substitute teacher and pursuing teaching credentials at San Jose State University. He has also recorded an album with his band, Of Shape and Sound. However, he became disillusioned with what he described as the "serious limitations" of an inherent bureaucracy in the educational system that he says fails to engage both students and teachers.

"We're trying to change the way people look at the educational process and bring a more creative process back into the system of learning," Haberman said. "Bring the kids back as well. It's all about the kids and the teachers. It's a great group effort."

The first leg of KlabLab's "Sound of Knowledge" California tour continues through mid-June. After that, O'Loughlin and Haberman hope to embark on a national tour this fall.

"Parents and educators across the nation and around the globe are seeking innovative, inexpensive ways to inspire engagement, creativity and collaboration in class," said O'Loughlin said. "It's time for a revolution in education, and KlabLab knows that music has the power to inspire learning."

And along the way, they'll be creating more videos like "Preposition Punk," finding success where so many other teachers have failed, in making the rules of the English language an entertaining and informative process:

What is a Retirement Income Plan and Why Should You Have One?

With the recently announced changes to the Old Age Security (OAS) program, there is renewed concern by many Canadians about their ?financial ability? to retire when they want. This worry could be eliminated for most people if they had a ?retirement income plan? prepared by a professional advisor who specializes in this area of financial planning. But what exactly is a ?retirement income plan??

Many people have been misled about the definition of a retirement income plan. Let?s start by talking about what it?s not. It isn?t a retirement investment portfolio. It isn?t a GIC, a CD, a Stock, a Bond, a RRIF, or a 401K. These are products, not plans. Products will be part of the plan, but they are not a plan by themselves.

Nor is a plan an investment projection. An investment projection is a printout from a bank or broker that shows how your investment portfolio (stock, bond, mutual fund, GIC or CD etc) will grow or decline over time, assuming a certain rate of interest or growth and accounting for any income that you may withdraw. For Canadians reading this book, a RRIF projection also doesn?t count as a retirement plan. All that shows is how long your RRIF account will last, assuming a certain rate of return, relative to the prescribed amount of income you must take out of the RRIF account each year. Such projections will be used when creating a complete retirement income plan, but they only make up a small part of the overall plan.

Retirement Income Plan ? Defined
A retirement income plan in its most basic form is a simple listing of all the possible sources of income that you can expect to receive in retirement. This would include things like: government pensions (CPP, OAS and Social Security in the USA), company pension(s), private annuities, rental income, royalties, and business income that may continue into retirement. The list should also include projected income from investment accounts ? both taxable (non-registered) and retirement accounts (RRSP, RRIF, TFSA, 401k etc).

At this point, investment projections may become confused with retirement plans. In fact, your list should include any and all sources of income. For some people, simply knowing how much income they can expect to receive becomes their plan. They will just spend what they get.

A more Advanced Plan
A more advanced and useful retirement income plan also addresses the other side of the picture ? your expenses. It?s useful to know how much income you can expect when you retire. It?s even more useful to know if your pensions and savings will generate enough income to cover your expenses for the rest of your life. You can determine this only by addressing the expense side of the equation. For people approaching retirement, not knowing if their income will cover their expenses presents a major cause of anxiety.

Unlike an investment projection, a retirement income plan is a written document that shows in black and white how your income will cover all your expenses during retirement. Expenses include the obvious ones like food and utility bills. They also include taxes and inflation. If your income doesn?t cover all your expenses, your plan will quantify the shortfall so that you can take steps to address it. Your plan will also show you how to position your investments and savings to produce the income you?ll need to cover your expenses.

A retirement income plan can be as simple as a Word document that summarizes your income and expenses or as complex as a report prepared by a financial advisor using advanced financial planning software. The point is, you need a plan! This is especially true now that the government has changed the rules when it comes to our Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) entitlements.

'Titanic' is Back: Why Do We Love Sad Movies? | The Hand

?Titanic? is back, and millions of folks will stand in line for another chance to get sad. Really sad.

Why do people want to make themselves so miserable by watching a flick that shows dead babies floating in the frigid North Atlantic, and young love that ends in tragedy? Just as Leonardo DiCaprio finds romantic bliss, he?s zapped. Really zapped.

Aristotle thought he had it figured out. ?Tragic plays have the capacity to purify the spirit,? he said. Huh? A tear-jerker leaves you purified?

Maybe not. But according to a new study from Ohio State University, it may at least leave you happier.

Researchers there put 361 college students through a brief encounter with misery to see what happens when people watch others get destroyed on the silver screen. They watched part of the British movie ?Atonement,? the story of star-crossed lovers who end up dead.

The participants were repeatedly asked about their emotions, and their thoughts, as they watched deception and tragedy unfold. They felt pretty good, it turns out, because the movie made them think about their own lives, and their own relationships.

Their lives, compared to the unfortunate lovers on the screen, were full of promise and good relationships and hopes for the future.

?What makes us happy in life are the people we are close to,? Silvia Knobloch-Westerwick, lead author of the study, said in a telephone interview. She is an associate professor of communication at Ohio State, and describes herself as a ?media psychologist.?

Sadness on the screen, or in our real lives, is about loss. ?Titanic? isn?t about an ocean cruise. It?s about dying. So is ?Atonement.? And dying is the ultimate manifestation of loss.

Movies, songs, and novels, are almost always about relationships. When a movie is particularly sad, it is because of a tragic relationship. So as the students in the Ohio study watched ?Atonement,? their thoughts naturally turned to their own relationships, with friends, family, and future loves.

?The movie made me think about how lucky I will be once I find someone worth that kind of love and commitment,? one student wrote.

?This movie demonstrated that true love does exist and when you find it, it is so powerful that you will go to the ends of the earth to hold on to it,? said another.

?I want to live my life to the fullest, and this movie has made we think a lot,? said a third.

The study, published in the journal Communication Research, found that the more the students thought about their own relationships, either current or future, the happier they felt.

?If you are in a very sad and negative mood you will think more, and you will also think about close relationships, because those sad movies are very much about relationships,? said Knobloch-Westerwick. ?If you are in a positive mood, you are thinking everything?s fine, so you are less thoughtful.?

Most of the quotes in the study are indeed about relationships. And many show that the students were stimulated by the film to think seriously about the people in their lives, or the lack thereof.

?The movie makes me wonder if I?m wasting my time on all the wrong guys and if I will ever truly love someone that deeply that I would wait for them an eternity,? one student noted.

There is more than just sadness in great movies, of course. ?Titanic? is a dramatic story, based on historical facts, and it is an intense production.

?You almost have to hold your breath when you see it,? Knobloch-Westerwick said.

But the movie, like so many other blockbusters, is about tragedy. Occasionally, a ?feel good? flick will be a sensational hit, but the top films on almost any day are about troubled relationships, and often death.

Maybe they make us more introspective, and thus more appreciative of the good things in our lives, as the Ohio study suggests. And maybe they really do make us happier, at least for a little while. But is that the only reason tragedies make great movies?

Maybe Aristotle wasn?t all wrong. Maybe a little suffering purifies the soul.

DENVER (AP) ? Brittney Griner's place in women's basketball history is secure.

Blocking layups, snagging rebounds, hitting shots over two and three helpless defenders, she towered over the competition all season long to earn player of the year and outstanding player of the NCAA tournament honors.

She was simply dominant in adding national champion to her resume on Tuesday night.

Griner had 26 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks to lead Baylor to an 80-61 victory over Notre Dame in the NCAA women's basketball championship, capping an unparalleled 40-0 season for the Lady Bears.

"Brittney Griner, whether she won today or not, will go down in the history of the women's game as, if not the greatest post player, one of the greatest," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "I'm so glad she has that ring now."

When the buzzer sounded, Griner finally celebrated, hamming it up as she helped take down the nets and dancing with Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

Then she lifted coach Kim Mulkey up on her shoulders briefly, just the way she has done for the Lady Bears during this long season.

"It meant everything for us to get it for coach," said Griner, referring to Mulkey's struggle with Bell's palsy during the tournament. "She felt like she wasn't there for us, but we told her every second that we could hear her loud and clear, everything she was saying."

Baylor became the seventh women's team to run through a season unbeaten and the first in NCAA history to win 40 games. It was the second national championship for Baylor, which also won a title in 2005.

"Looking back when we get older, I'm always going to remember this moment, always going to remember confetti falling and being here with my team," Griner said.

Baylor did it in a nearly wire-to-wire victory, finishing with a flourish when anything less than bringing a title back to Waco would have been a huge disappointment.

The 6-foot-8 Griner was right at the center of the action as the Lady Bears took control. Every time Notre Dame made a run in the second half to cut into the deficit, Griner had an answer. She showed a wide array of post moves, hitting turnaround jumpers and hooks that the Irish had no way to stop ? even when they collapsed around her.

"Brittney Griner comes to work every day," Mulkey said. "A lot of great players think they're all that and they half go through drills and they come to practice and they dog it. That child comes to work and brings her work pail every day."

Notre Dame fell short in the title game for the second straight season, having lost to Texas A&M by six points last year.

Coach Muffet McGraw's senior-heavy crew did finish the season with a decided edge over rival Connecticut ? the Irish won the Big East regular-season title and defeated the Huskies in three of four meetings, including the national semifinal.

But like every other team this year, Notre Dame couldn't solve Baylor and its superstar.

"I think she's one of a kind," McGraw said. "There's so many things she can do. There have been some guards that have had some skill like that. But as a post player, she's the best I've seen."

Griner, selected The Associated Press player of the year, also was named most outstanding player of the tournament.

"We wouldn't be here without my team," the junior said. "All the awards ? none of that means anything. If I don't have my team here, we can't get this."

All-American point guard Skylar Diggins did all she could to keep the Irish (36-4) in the game, scoring 20 points. But senior Natalie Novosel had just five points, going 0 for 11 from the field. Devereaux Peters, also playing in her final game, was saddled with foul trouble because of Griner. She scored seven points.

Diggins "played a great game," McGraw said. "She's just a big-time player and she didn't get a lot of help today."

Like Griner, Diggins has pledged to return for her senior year ? both could join the WNBA draft ? for a third run at the title.

Notre Dame had an early 9-8 lead before Baylor took over with a 12-2 spurt. The Irish were down by 14 in the first half before cutting their deficit to 34-28 at the break. They got as close as 42-39 and had the ball, but Griner asserted herself, scoring nine of the next 19 points for Baylor to seal the victory.

"They went on a run there," Diggins said. "I just remember we cut it down to three and they went on a run. I saw 10, 12, 14, 16, 19. We couldn't get rebounds when they missed shots."

Odyssey Sims added 19 points and Destiny Williams had 12 for the Lady Bears, who outrebounded Notre Dame 46-27 and now have the third unbeaten season in women's basketball in the last four years. UConn, which has gone undefeated four times, did it in 2009 and 2010. Texas and Tennessee also have unbeaten seasons.

Baylor's victory also gave President Barack Obama some bragging rights. He correctly picked Baylor to beat Notre Dame in the title game.

With 1:04 left and the game well in hand, Mulkey took out Griner and the two shared a long hug. The fiery coach then went down the bench and hugged each of her players while holding back tears.

"I'm just so happy," Mulkey said. "That old saying, 'you're so happy you cry.' I can't quit crying.'"

Mulkey, who did her net cutting with daughter Mackenzie ? a freshman on the team ? and son Kramer, has now won a title as a player (at Louisiana Tech), an Olympic gold medal (in 1984) and two titles as a coach. Only five women's coaches have more than one championship at the top level of NCAA competition.

Mulkey has downplayed the 40 wins, noting that her former coach and mentor at Louisiana Tech Leon Barmore won 40 games in 1980. That was before women's basketball was governed by the NCAA, which didn't begin keeping records until the 1982 season.

It was the second meeting between the teams this season. Baylor also won the first one, by 13 in Waco on Nov. 17. That win gave the Lady Bears the preseason WNIT title.

As usual, Griner put on a show in warm-ups, thrilling the crowd with a series of impressive dunks ? including a one-handed throw down, a double-pump slam and another in which she hung on rim. She dunked twice in the tournament, matching Candace Parker for most dunks by a woman in NCAA tournament play and during a college career (seven).

She couldn't catch one against the Irish.

The Lady Bears had a strong cheering section that included Griffin ? dancing in his seat at the end of the game ? and country music star Trace Adkins. He was a freshman walk-on football player at Louisiana Tech in the early 1980s when Mulkey was a senior there.

Notre Dame had its own star fan in former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who earned a graduate degree at the school. The Irish were wearing their green uniforms for the first time since last season's title loss.

It didn't help. On this night, nothing could stop Griner.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) ? The West Virginia coal mine where an explosion killed 29 men two years ago Thursday will be permanently sealed with concrete, the mine's new owner said.

Virginia-based Alpha Natural Resources, which acquired the mine when it bought Massey Energy last summer, said Wednesday it will seal the portals ? large tunnels miners use to get underground ? at the Upper Big Branch mine. Boreholes will be plugged and shafts that house the huge industrial fans meant to sweep bad air out of the mine will be capped to prevent any access. The job should be finished by summer, the company said.

"Everyone still has vivid memories of the tragedy and the suffering the miners' families endured," Chief Executive Officer Kevin Crutchfield said Wednesday. "For all of us in the mining industry, it is a solemn reminder of why we must always put safety first in everything we do."

Meanwhile, the mother and siblings of one of those killed sued former Massey Energy chief Don Blankenship on Wednesday, along with eight other individuals they hold responsible in their lawsuit for the worst U.S. coal mining disaster in four decades.

Pittsburgh attorney Bruce Stanley filed the suit against the former Massey executives and mine managers in Raleigh County Circuit Court for the family of fallen miner Edward Dean Jones, just before the two-year statute of limitations expired. The complaint claims deliberate infliction of emotional distress and demands compensatory and punitive damages.

Blankenship, who has retired and virtually dropped from public view, did not immediately respond to efforts to get his comment on the lawsuit. His codefendants have moved on to other jobs.

The lawsuit does not target Massey or Alpha. Rather, it goes after individuals the Jones family says should have put their workers' lives ahead of profits. Those named include Massey's former general counsel Shane Harvey and former vice president for safety Elizabeth Chamberlin, both of whom reported directly to Blankenship.

Harvey declined comment and Chamberlin could not immediately be reached late Wednesday.

Chamberlin was among Massey employees who have invoked their right to avoid self-incrimination and refused to testify in four investigations.

"Our hope is that they will be criminally prosecuted for their unconscionable deeds," said Jones' sister, Judy Jones Peterson, "but I also believe they should be held accountable individually to each and every family member that they irreparably damaged on that fateful day when our loved one was taken from us."

"We will never be able to come to terms with this loss knowing it was completely preventable," she said in a statement. "We want them to be held responsible. We need to make sure that a message is sent to this industry that we will not tolerate such flagrant acts."

So far, only two Massey employees have faced criminal charges over the explosion.

Former superintendent Gary May, a codefendant in Wednesday's lawsuit, is the highest-ranking mine official charged so far. He has pleaded guilty to defrauding the federal government and is cooperating with prosecutors while awaiting sentencing in August.

Former security chief Hughie Elbert Stover, meanwhile, is appealing his recent conviction and a three-year sentence for lying to investigators and ordering subordinates to destroy documents.

Jones' twin brother, Gene Jones, said the lawsuit seeks to hold others accountable for their actions.

"They blew a hole in our world when they killed our family, and I've got news for them. We're not going away without a fight," he said.

The other plaintiffs are their mother, Ruby Nell Lafferty Jones, and sister Cheryl Sue Jones. Dean's widow has reached a separate settlement.

In December, Alpha reached a $210 million non-prosecution agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice that spared the corporation liability but left individuals open to prosecution. The deal guaranteed that the families of the dead miners and two co-workers who survived the explosion each receive $1.5 million.

Those who accept the payout can still pursue lawsuits, but the $1.5 million will be deducted from any settlement or jury award. At least eight families of dead miners previously settled with Massey.

The Jones family didn't learn Dean's fate until four days after the blast, when state mine safety officials informed them he had been found.

The lawsuit claims the family was led to believe he may have reached an underground safety chamber. Instead, he was actually killed instantly by powerful forces that knocked him down, then doubled back and struck him a second time.

Stanley, who represented two widows after a deadly January 2006 fire at another Massey mine, cited a memo that became the focal point of that wrongful death trial in his latest lawsuit. On Oct. 29, 2005, Blankenship issued a memo to all Massey underground mine superintendents, telling them to focus solely on production.

"If any of you have been asked by your group presidents, your supervisors, engineers or anyone else to do anything other than run coal ... you need to ignore them and run coal," it said. "This memo is only necessary because we seem not to understand that coal pays the bills."

The lawsuit says Upper Big Branch got the memo, and the message was received.

"Instead of cleaning up their act" after the deaths at the Alma No. 1 mine, "defendants redoubled their efforts at squeezing profits from safety-challenged UBB," the lawsuit says.

It says Jones briefly stopped production because of ventilation problems in the mine, and was immediately threatened with being fired, along with every miner working with him. The lawsuit also charges that one miner was fired for causing a 55-minute delay while he tried to ensure the crews had enough fresh air to prevent explosions.

Investigators said they found the mine explosion was sparked by worn cutting equipment, and clogged and broken water sprayers failed to contain what should have been a minor methane flare-up.
