Simple Affiliate Marketing Tips To Increase Your Online Revenue ...

You don?t need to throw everything onto the Internet without being prepared. It is not going to swim; it might sink. It could be something as simple as a craft item. For example, you will need to develop a price for your product as well as the time necessary to make and ship the product. Of course, there?s a lot more to learn than that, and this is where the right Internet marketing tips can really help your business to succeed.

Offer a short-term incentive or promotion to boost your site?s PageRank. If your promotion is really stellar, you can essentially ?buy? PageRank, since your promotion may end up being linked from deals sites. It?s like how stores sometimes sell loss leader items, knowing that they?ll profit off the additional business they bring in.

More subscribers means higher profits. You can set up multiple versions of your website to determine which version attracts more subscribers. Show different versions to different groups. By looking at the number of people who subscribed to these two methods, you can determine which one was most effective.

The key to successful online marketing is persistence. Don?t give up too easily, you may be on the precipice of success. Be sure that all your i?s are dotted and t?s crossed before you launch a new product line. At times, this can take a lot of effort. Think of the results you?ll see after you?re done!

Take advantage of social media websites such as Facebook or Twitter and integrate them into your marketing strategy. These social media sites keep you in direct contact with your customers and give you the quickest way to promote sales or promotions. Just be wary of over-promoting. Try to keep your posts valuable and insightful, and only include marketing in a portion of them.

One method for getting new customers is setting up a landing page that allows users to opt-in. A squeeze page will encourage your visitors to share their contact information with you. The things you can offer here are endless. You could offer up a free eBook, some type of other informational product, a discount on a future purchase, etc. This provides them with something free and you can add them without any issues to your own list.

Remember to utilize email to get the most from your business. Any newsletter you create for customers should be interesting, while also containing important information. Your customers should be grateful for the information you send by email, not annoyed. By sending customers newsletters, you can stay in touch with them after they have left you site, thus, making them feel appreciated.

Always keep an eye on exactly what kind of content you are giving your customers when you use the internet to promote your business. The content of your website, and of your marketing, should always be fresh, new and individual. Teach your visitors something about you or your business, and keep the content regularly updated to ensure repeat visitors.

Social media is a critical component of a successful and engaging online marketing strategy. Having a Facebook fan page will give your customers and clients a place to leave feedback that others will be able to see, creating a sort of Internet word of mouth. You could also use Twitter to interact with people and find out what your customers think of your products.

Keep learning about the things you can use online. Technology is constantly improving so you need to make sure you keep your website up-to-date with the latest innovations.

Put banners on your website that do not look like banners. Dress them up to resemble click-able links, leading to more valuable content. People often ignore the typical, boring banners they see, so create something special that will make people want to click them.

While following what your competitors do is important, it is even more important that your own marketing be memorable and unique. Advanced filters exist today which will find any duplicate content, meaning your reputation will be ruined as well as your chances for success. You need to know how to innovate.

Successful web marketing should include video uploads that have the potential to go viral. Always incorporate a link to your site so that you do not lose your client. This can really increase the amount of traffic your site receives.

After reading the information above, you should now be aware of the different organizing strategies you can apply towards your own business. Take the time to organize and prepare so that you will be successful. With the information you have gathered you can create a marketing project that will be a success.

A number of people would like to learn more about link building, but not everyone knows where they should look. Luckily, the following article has some great information to help you get started. Begin using the information that you have learned about link building from this article.

Now, a course on love at Kolkata's Presidency University

The Presidency University in Kolkata

Kolkata:?Come New Year, students at the Presidency University in Kolkata can opt for a course on the enigma of love, its vice-chancellor said on Sunday, adding that this was part of the new interdisciplinary studies programme.

"The new course on love will deal with its sociological implications and will begin from the next semester in January," Malabika Sarkar, vice-chancellor of Presidency University told IANS.

"The course will be taught by the university's sociology department. It will basically deal with the theoretical aspects of love," Ms Sarkar said.

The varsity began an initiative in July to introduce students to a variety of topics, irrespective of their major subject, becoming the first university in the country to offer interdisciplinary courses.

Under this programme, science students can get a taste of liberal arts, and those delving into humanities can take up a science subject.

"This is the first such initiative in the country. In the traditional Indian university education system, honours students are required to take up two pass subjects... We have replaced the pass subjects," professor Somak Raychaudhury, head of the varsity's physics department had said earlier.

Mr Raychaudhury said the decision to juxtapose the two branches was taken as students do not take pass subjects seriously.

"So, instead of forcing pass subjects on students, we decided to break them up and have a list of 10 papers. All the honours students are required to take up 10 papers. While the science students are needed to take at least two arts papers, it is vice versa for students of humanities," the professor explained.

For example, the physics department has introduced a course, "Physics of Everyday Life", under which students, irrespective of the stream they are majoring in, are taught how things like a camera work.

"The course is open to everybody. An English literature student can take it up. Similarly, the sociology department is offering a subject called 'Love' that students from other departments can study," the professor said.

BART labor talks continue as planned strike looms

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? With an eleventh hour order, Gov. Jerry Brown averted a strike of San Francisco's Bay Area Rapid Transit system late Sunday night, setting at ease the minds of many anxious commuters.

In the order, Brown named a board of investigators for a seven-day inquiry into the contract dispute that threatened to shut down, beginning Monday, one of the region's major train lines.

Brown's order comes under a law that allows the state's intervention if a strike will significantly disrupt public transportation services and endanger public health.

"For the sake of the people of the Bay Area, I urge ? in the strongest terms possible ? the parties to meet quickly and as long as necessary to get this dispute resolved," Brown said in the order.

Bay Area Rapid Transit managers and union leaders had returned to the bargaining table Sunday in hopes of heading off a strike that would have created traffic nightmares for San Francisco area commuters for the second time in a month.

Representatives from BART management and the agency's two largest employee unions negotiated for about 14 hours Saturday and resumed bargaining Sunday morning as a midnight deadline loomed. Brown's order came at around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Big differences remain on key issues including wages, pensions, worker safety and health care costs, but the parties expressed some optimism that an agreement could be reached to avert a strike planned for Monday.

"The parties made some important but incremental moves yesterday, and I hope to get to a deal," Josie Mooney, chief negotiator for the Service Employees International Union 1021, said Sunday before heading into negotiations. "If the parties work very hard, then it's certainly possible in the amount of time we have left."

"There was definitely movement from both sides," BART chief negotiator Thomas Hock said as he left negotiations late Saturday night. "Hopefully, if we keep moving, we will get to a proposal that both sides can agree to."

BART's two largest unions issued a 72-hour notice Thursday that employees would walk off the job if they didn't reach agreement on a new contract by midnight Sunday.

"BART really is the backbone of the transit network. No other transit agency has the ability to absorb BART's capacity if there's a disruption," said John Goodwin, spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.

In the event of a strike, transit agencies had planned to add bus and ferry service, keep carpool lanes open all day and even give away coffee gift cards to encourage drivers to pick up riders. They were also encouraging workers to avoid peak traffic hours or telecommute if possible.

When BART workers shut down train service for four days in early July, roadways were packed and commuters waited in long lines for buses and ferries. The unions agreed to call off that strike and extend their contracts until Sunday while negotiations continued.

Bay Area and state officials have been pressuring BART managers and union leaders to reach an agreement this weekend, saying a strike would create financial hardship for working families and hurt the region's economy.

Buying Real Estate ? Advice That Will Keep You From Making ...

Purchasing a home is a huge step for any person, though this especially true for a first time buyer. The commitment and expense can be very stressful. In the following paragraphs, you?ll find tips that can help any buyer make a good purchase, and will make the process of purchasing property a little less stressful.

Real estate agents should contact those who they have helped buy or sell a home once each year. When you contact them, they will recall how you helped them with their real estate experience. Give them a friendly reminder that you make money through referrals, so you would be pleased if they could mention your name to others.

If you are planning to move to another area, go on the Internet to research the neighborhood in which the property is located. Almost every town has plenty of information online. Before you spend money on relocating to a town, make sure you think about the economic situation there.

TIP! When negotiating with real estate purchases, always use a moderate approach. Often, people who are too aggressive about trying to make the best possible deal work against their own best interests.

You need a business partner you can trust, when purchasing an expensive parcel of commercial property. This makes the loan qualification process much easier when you go to purchase the property. You may need a co-signer to get a down payment, and credit to buy some commercial real estate.

Keep an open mind about your options. Sometimes you must choose between two major features if the price of having both falls outside of your price range. If you can?t find a home in the area you want, shop for one in a similar area.

Try to get a checklist from your Realtor. Checklists cover each step of purchasing your home. They help you through the process of finding the home, making sure you can afford it and securing a mortgage. This checklist will help make sure that everything that needs to be taken care of is accomplished in time for settlement.

TIP! A realtor should keep in contact during the holiday season with those people that they have worked with in the past. They will be reminded of how you made their home buying experience a great one.

It is vital that you know about the common terms found in lending when you purchase your house. You are less likely to be confused later if you understand upfront how the term of the mortgage influences the amount of the monthly payment and your total cost over the entire life of the loan.

Real Estate

It is a good time to get invested in real estate. Upsets in the real estate market have resulted in low prices for buyers. You can consider getting out of an apartment and into a house. Over time you can expect the market to go up again, which will turn your investment into profit.

TIP! Properties that require updates and many improvements are usually sold at reduced prices. This can be a money-saver in purchasing the home, with the ability to make improvements as time allows.

When you are trying to find a property broker, have some questions planned for them. Important questions you need them to answer include how many sales they made over the last year, and how much experience they?ve had in the neighborhood you?re looking at. This agent should have the ability to answer each question professionally.

Never close a deal on a house before you have it inspected by an inspection professional. Some homes look fine to the untrained eye, but need a lot of work. Dealing with unforeseen repairs can be expensive and some could be so big that you will have to find somewhere else to live while repairs are being done.

It can be invaluable for you to obtain an authorized letter of approval from a lender prior to beginning your search for real estate. It is very discouraging to find the perfect home only to find you can?t get a loan for it. Securing financing can take a long time, and you don?t want to lose your house waiting for that loan.

TIP! Get a partner that you trust when you want to make the step and buy an expensive commercial lot. When you have a partner who has a good financial standing and reputation, it is much easier to quality for the loan needed to purchase the property.

Always ask real estate agents about the length of time they have resided in the area you are considering. If your agent is not familiar with the area, they won?t be able to inform you about many things you may want to know. Ideally, look for an agent who has lived in the area for at least 10 years.

You must research the neighborhood of a home before you buy. If there are particular services that are missing in the surrounding area, or if the quality of the neighborhood ends up being not as great as you thought, you will end up very disappointed. Your neighborhood will greatly impact your lifestyle because that will be where you meet people, shop, and engage in many of the social events that you will participate in.

Take your time to carefully measure a home you are highly interested in buying. You will feel better once you know that the physical square footage is equivalent to what the seller has listed publicly. These two numbers need to be approximately the same, within 100 square feet. If they don?t match, you must determine what the cause of the problem is.

TIP! Request a checklist from your Realtor to put yourself in the best position before buying. It is not uncommon for a Realtor to bring a checklist containing all facets of a home purchase, including shopping for neighborhoods to obtaining financing.

Get a warranty for the house. When you buy a new house, whether from a previous owner or the builder, ask for the warranty. New home builders normally offer protection for one to three years. Previous owners should be willing to purchase a home warranty for at least a year to help you offset any impending repairs.

Term Goals

Always have your goals at the forefront of your mind as you are preparing to purchase a property. Decide if you have short term goals or long term goals to be met. If the prospective investment does not meet your goals, do not look into it further. There are many property owners that fail to check if there needs will be met, and will have a losing investment on their hands.

TIP! Make sure that you have a little bit of extra money put away in case any unexpected costs pop up when you?re buying a home. Buyers generally expect the closing costs will only consist of points paid to the bank, real estate taxes, and obviously the down payment.

Okay, are you now ready to buy? Hopefully, the tips you have read in the above article has helped to calm your fears. Apply the information that fits your particular circumstances, and you will make the most out of the buying process. You don?t have to have a degree in real estate investment to purchase a home or other property. The idea of owning property is very invigorating. Just be smart about your choices and watch your numbers.

Red Sox owner enters $70M deal for Boston Globe

BOSTON (AP) ? Businessman John Henry, the principal owner of the Boston Red Sox, has entered into an agreement to buy The Boston Globe for $70 million, a massive drop from its record $1.1 billion price two decades ago.

The impending purchase from The New York Times Co. marks Henry's "first foray into the financially unsettled world of the news media," the Globe said Saturday. The deal will give Henry the 141-year-old newspaper, its websites and affiliated companies, it said.

The Times announced in February it was putting the Globe and related assets up for sale four years after calling off a previous attempt to sell it. The company's CEO said at the time selling the Globe would help the company focus attention on The New York Times brand.

Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy confirmed the planned sale of the Globe and other media properties to Henry. The Times said the all-cash sale, expected to close in 30 to 60 days, includes BostonGlobe.com, Boston.com, The Worcester Telegram & Gazette, Telegram.com, the direct mail marketing company Globe Direct and the company's 49 percent interest in Metro Boston, a free daily newspaper for commuters.

Henry, in a statement published by the Globe, cited the "essential role that its journalists and employees play in Boston, throughout New England, and beyond."

"The Boston Globe's award-winning journalism as well as its rich history and tradition of excellence have established it as one of the most well respected media companies in the country," Henry said.

Henry, who also owns the English Premier League soccer club Liverpool F.C., said he would reveal details about his plans for the Globe in the next few days.

Globe editor Brian McGrory said the newspaper's Red Sox coverage and its editorial decisions won't be affected by the sale.

"We have no plans whatsoever to change our Red Sox coverage specifically, or our sports coverage in general, nor will we be asked," McGrory told the newspaper. "The Globe's sports reporting and commentary is the gold standard in the industry."

The Times bought the Globe from the family of former Globe executive Stephen Taylor in 1993 for what it said was the highest price paid for an American newspaper. The price Henry is paying is less than 7 percent of the 1993 price.

The Globe and other newspapers have faced difficulties in recent years as readers have fled to the Internet and advertisers have cut spending on newspapers and moved more ads online. Still, the Globe is a journalistic institution in New England and was lauded for its coverage of the deadly Boston Marathon bombings in April.

A 2009 round of cost-cutting, involving pay cuts, helped put the Globe on better financial footing and prompted the Times to call off a planned sale. In late 2011, the Globe started charging for access to its online version at BostonGlobe.com, which helped to boost circulation revenues.

The Times company doesn't separate Globe revenue from The New York Times revenue in its financial statements. But the Globe had an average weekday circulation of 230,351 in the six months through September, according to the Alliance for Audited Media. The newspaper's increase in digital subscriptions more than offset declines in print. But the total is still down significantly from the nearly 413,000 it boasted in September 2002.

The Globe isn't the only newspaper to see a huge drop in its price at sale time.

In April 2012, Philadelphia's two largest newspapers sold for $55 million, a fraction of the $515 million paid by a group of investors in 2006. The buyers of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News included influential New Jersey Democrat George Norcross III, former New Jersey Nets owner Lewis Katz and cable TV mogul H.F. "Gerry" Lenfest.

Eating oily fish can help ward off skin cancer

EATING plenty of oily fish such as salmon, sardines and ?mackerel protects against skin cancer by destroying malignant cells, according to research.

Chemicals in oily fish destroy cells in skin and oral tumours while leaving healthy ones alone, scientists said.

Experiments found the omega-3 fatty acids stopped them growing and induced cell death in both early and late stages of the diseases.

The finding could even lead to the development of aerosols or gels containing the molecules that zap skin and mouth cancers.

Professor Kenneth Parkinson, of Queen Mary, University of London, said: ?We found the omega-3 fatty acid selectively inhibited the growth of the ?malignant and pre-malignant cells at doses which did not ?affect the normal cells.

?Surprisingly, we discovered this was partly due to an over stimulation of a key growth factor (epidermal growth factor) which triggered cell death. This is a novel mechanism of action of these fatty acids.?

The finding published ?online in the journal Carcinogenesis suggests they could be used in both the treatment and ?prevention of certain skin and oral ?cancers.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids cannot be made by humans in large quantities so we must acquire them from our diet. As well as oily fish, flax seeds and walnuts are also a good source for the molecules that also ward off heart disease.

The researchers were studying a particular type of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

Squamous cells are the main part of the outermost layers of the skin, and also occur in the lining of the digestive tract, lungs and other areas of the body.

Oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) are the sixth most common cancer worldwide.

Grim Jobs Report | National Catholic Reporter

Grim Jobs Report | National Catholic Reporter?by MSW. ?MGB: Wage growth is going up in some places, not others. ?If we can get a new minimum wage passed, it will increase wages up the line. ?Interestingly, as I stated on my own blog and Facebook page, as well as directly to the White House, adding a COLA to the minimum wage should be the price for adopting chained CPI. ?This takes both issues off the table and leads to automatic wage growth to go along with productivity growth. ?Until workers own all the technology and capital, they are at a disadvantage in both the automated and world economies - because there are always more workers than employers. ?The minimum wage has been shown to counteract that without increasing joblessness.

Frankly, if there is joblessness, that should be an invitation for the establishment of funded training programs, where employees are paid a wage to train - since it seems that the current labor shortage in certain fields is not being made up by hiring people and training them - industry wants only those already trained and would rather short staff than provide training. ?Short staffing also keeps wages low.

Future college teammates shine at All-State football game

By BARRY LEWIS World Sports Writer on Aug 3, 2013, at 2:23 AM??Updated on 8/03/13 at 3:13 AM

Cleveland quarterback Chas Stallard and Fort Gibson running back Jake Gandara got an additional head start on their college football careers during All-State week.

Stallard and Gandara, who will be teammates at the University of Central Oklahoma, were the East's two offensive standouts in a 32-7 loss to the West in the Oklahoma Coaches Association's All-State Game before an estimated 6,000 fans on Friday night at Union-Tuttle Stadium.

Stallard completed 8 of 14 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. He also had 10 carries for 23 yards. Gandara had 181 all-purpose yards. He had five rushes for 47 yards, one reception for 12 and five kickoff returns for 122.

"We've been working out at UCO for a month, so we definitely had a lot more reps together than anyone else," Gandara said.

Stallard and Gandara became friends when they met during track regionals in their junior year.

"During a couple of rain delays, we were just by each other and started chatting it up," Gandara said. "Chas is a great guy and a great player."

It was obvious on the field Friday that they had good chemistry. On a fourth-down play late in the game deep in their own territory, Stallard found Gandara for a 12-yard completion that picked up a first down.

"We've kept in touch during the last couple seasons and it will be something that will go on in the future at UCO," Stallard said. "Jake's a great player."

Stallard and Gandara finished their high school careers leading their teams to their best seasons in a while as each reached the Class 4A quarterfinals in 2012.

Stallard produced 9,176 total yards and 112 touchdowns during his four years at Cleveland.

"We turned things around from what it had been in the past so it was a good year," Stallard said.

Gandara rushed for 5,296 yards over the last three seasons, including 2,253 last year, and had 57 TDs over the past two years.

"Fort Gibson has great coaching and is on the prowl right now," said Gandara, who averaged 30 yards on his first four kickoff returns Friday. Stallard also had good chemistry with Poteau tight end Jay Werner as they connected for a 9-yard TD to cap a first-quarter drive that also included a 34-yard connection. Werner will play for Northeastern State.

With the West ahead 12-7, it appeared as if Stallard had passed for the go-ahead TD in the first half's final minute as he completed a 72-yard strike to Coweta's Hunter Rasberry, but he had the ball stripped away by Oklahoma City Douglass' Terry Harris near the goal line and the fumble turned into a touchback.

"We did a decent job moving the ball but killed ourselves with turnovers," said Stallard, who was intercepted twice - once on a deflection off a receiver. "Football is such a momentum game, we just beat ourselves.

"I hate to lose. I don't care whether I'm playing checkers or badminton or whatever. But the week was fun and I met a lot of great guys that I will probably play against later on in college. Other than the final score it was a great week. Camp starts on the 10th and now I am excited to get down to UCO and compete."

Apple's Craziest, Most Futuristic Patents Show How Insanely Ambitious Its Thinking Is (AAPL)

Business Insider writes, Apple has long been known for thinking outside of the box. Luckily it's often possible to get a hint of what Apple has in the works, just by looking at its many patent applications. It's important to note that Apple files for many more patents than it will actually use, employing a protective strategy that quickly annoys those tired of legal patent battles in the tech industry. It's a time-consuming job to monitor the slew of patents that Apple files for every week, but thankfully the team over at Patently Apple offer a categorized collection of the tech giant's patents ? complete with?

Manchester:? Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has taken to Twitter to complain about a controversial decision to give one of his country's batsmen out during the third Ashes test against England on Thursday.

Usman Khawaja was adjudged to have edged a delivery by Graeme Swann to wicketkeeper Matt Prior, despite replay technology failing to provide any evidence that he touched the ball with his bat.

Rudd tweeted "I've just sat down to watch the test. That was one of the worst cricket umpiring decisions I have ever seen."

The call ? upheld after a review ? appeared to be widely condemned, with Australia bowling great Shane Warne calling it a "ridiculous decision."

It left Australia 82-2 in the opening session, with the team needing victory to stay alive in the five-test series.

  • Kirk Cameron

During<a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/03/kirk-cameron-piers-morgan-homosexuality-unnatural_n_1318430.html" target="_hplink"> an interview with Piers Morgan</a>, the "Growing Pains" heartthrob who transitioned from a "teen-idol-atheist in Hollywood and became a devoted follower of Jesus Christ in the middle of [his] career" explained that he believes homosexuality is "unnatural... I think that it's detrimental, and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization." On the issue of marriage equality Cameron remarked, "Marriage was defined by God a long time ago. Marriage is almost as old as dirt, and it was defined in the garden between Adam and Eve -- one man, one woman for life till death do you part. So I would never attempt to try to redefine marriage. And I don't think anyone else should either. So do I support the idea of gay marriage? No, I don't."

  • Mel Gibson

In recent years, Gibson has become better known for his public tirades -- which have included racist, misogynistic, and anti-immigrant slurs -- than he has for any of his movies. But <em>The Advocate</em><a href="http://www.advocate.com/Arts_and_Entertainment/Entertainment_News/Mels_Meltdowns_Included_Antigay_Speech/" target="_hplink"> cites a 1991 interview</a> Gibson gave to the Spanish newspaper<em> El Pais</em>, in which he spoke about gay men: <blockquote>"They take it up the a** ... this is only for taking a s***," he said at the time. "With this look, who's going to think I'm gay? I don't lend myself to that type of confusion. Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?"</blockquote> Gibson is also <a href="http://fromtheleft.wordpress.com/2010/07/12/mel-gibsons-vicious-homophobic-past/" target="_hplink">believed to have strongly counseled</a> Heath Ledger against taking the role of Ennis Del Mar in Ang Lee's Oscar-winning film "Brokeback Mountain."

  • Victoria Jackson

The former "Saturday Night Live" star and now Tea Party activist sparked national furor when she <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/03/22/victoria-jackson-slams-glee-showbiz-tonight_n_838862.html" target="_hplink">slammed the hit show "Glee" after it featured a kiss between two gay characters</a> in a column for WorldNetDaily. In the column, Jackson wrote in response to an emotional, long awaited kiss between Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss). "Did you see "Glee" this week? Sickening! And, besides shoving the gay thing down our throats, they made a mockery of Christians - again! I wonder what their agenda is? Hey, producers of "Glee" - what's your agenda? One-way tolerance?" She later appeared on "Showbiz Tonight" to clarify her thoughts. "Well, it doesn't matter what I think," Jackson said. "What matters is what the Bible says. And I'm really concerned about our country because immorality is, well, let's see: secular humanism rules the airwaves, and it's stealing the innocence away from this whole generation of children. My daughter is a teenager and I can't find any show that she can watch." With that diatribe, Jackson was asked, based on her remarks, both in the column and in the interview, whether she was homophobic. "That's a cute little buzzword of the liberal agenda," Jackson smirked. "Basically, the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin."

  • Cee Lo Green

In June, the singer and "The Voice" co-host<a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ceelogreen" target="_hplink"> lashed out on Twitter</a> after a Minnesota music editor gave an episode of the hit series a lackluster review. He tweeted: "I respect your criticism, but be fair! People enjoyed last night! I'm guessing you're gay? And my masculinity offended you? Well f--k you!" As E Online is reporting, Cee Lo <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/cee_lo_says_sorry_outrageous_homophobic/248478" target="_hplink">attempted an apology </a>on Twitter, writing: "Apologies gay community! What was homophobic about that? I said I was guessing he [was] gay which is fine but its nice to [know] what u think of me." The comment was deleted shortly thereafter.

  • Isaiah Washington

It was no laughing matter when "Grey's Anatomy" actor Washington referred to co-star Knight as a "faggot" during an on-set argument with Patrick Dempsey. Though Washington later denied using the word backstage at the 2007 Golden Globes, Knight said he was inspired to come out publicly after hearing his co-star use the word. "I've never been called that to my face," he told Ellen Degeneres. "So I think when that happened, something shifted, and it became bigger than myself." Washington was fired from the show shortly thereafter, but said he believed racism had been a factor in his dismissal, and claimed that Knight had manipulated the controversy.

  • Donald Trump

Last year, the 65-year-old entrepreneur <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/02/nyregion/after-roasting-trump-reacts-in-character.html" target="_hplink">compared the legalization of marriage equality</a> to his reluctance to use a new kind of putter during golf, according to <em>The New York Times</em>. "A lot of people -- I don't want this to sound trivial -- but a lot of people are switching to these really long putters, very unattractive," he said. "It's weird. You see these great players with these really long putters, because they can't sink three-footers anymore...I have so many fabulous friends who happen to be gay, but I am a traditionalist." <em>Correction: A previous version of this slide incorrectly stated Trump's age as 56. He is 65.</em>

  • Roland Martin

The CNN analyst was <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/06/roland-martin-david-beckham-glaad-super-bowl_n_1257036.html" target="_hplink">slammed for remarks he made</a> during this year's Super Bowl XLVI. Martin, who was actively tweeting throughout the game, poked fun at men who may have liked David Beckham's H&M underwear ads. He wrote that "real bruhs" would not purchase underwear advertised by Beckham, and that people should "smack the ish out" of a male supporter of the ad. In condemning his comments, GLAAD cited earlier statements by Martin, such as <a href="http://www.rolandsmartin.com/page/news.cfm?ArticleID=10" target="_hplink">a column in which he said that his wife</a> has "counseled many men and women to walk away from the gay lifestyle, and to live a chaste life," to say that his latest tweets were part of an anti-gay pattern. He <a href="http://www.politico.com/blogs/media/2012/02/cnns-martin-defends-himself-against-glaad-113600.html#.TzAAcpn3MjM.twitter" target="_hplink">later responded to the backlash</a>, noting, "I was not referring to sexuality directly or indirectly regarding the David Beckham ad, and I'm sorry folks took it otherwise. It was meant to be a deliberately over the top and sarcastic crack about soccer; I do not advocate violence of any kind against anyone gay, or not."

  • Chris Brown

Exactly how effective Brown's anger management classes are going is questionable, given the series of<a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/chris_brown_drops_n-bombs_homophobic/218318" target="_hplink"> homophobic, racially-charged tweets</a> he sent out last December after rapper Raz, formerly of the group B2K, set him off. "@razb2k n---a you want attention!" he wrote. "Grow up n----a!!! Dick in da ass lil boy...Tell me this @razb2k!! Why when the money was coming in u won't complaining about getting butplugged! #homothug!!!" Later, Brown wrote, "I'm not homophobic! He's just disrespectful!!!"

  • Blake Shelton

No stranger to perceived homophobia, Shelton was heavily criticized <a href="https://twitter.com/#%21/blakeshelton/status/65999662171172865" target="_hplink">after he tweeted</a>, "Re-writing my fav Shania Twain song ... Any man that tries touching my behind he's gonna be a beaten, bleedin', heaving kind of guy." He later apologized for the gaffe via Twitter, noting: <blockquote>Hey y'all allow me to <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/blakeshelton/status/66171257435066368" target="_hplink">seriously apologize</a> for the misunderstanding with the whole re-write on the Shania song last night...</blockquote> <blockquote>It honestly <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/blakeshelton/status/66171941303762944" target="_hplink">wasn't even meant</a> that way... I now know that their are people out there waiting to jump at everything I say on here or anywhere</blockquote> <blockquote>But when it comes to<a href="https://twitter.com/#!/blakeshelton/status/66173127956242432" target="_hplink"> gay/lesbian rights</a> or just feelings... I love everybody. So go look for a real villain and leave me out of it!!!</blockquote> The original lyrics are, "Any man of mine better walk the line/ Better show me a teasin', squeezin', pleasin' kinda time."

  • Adam Carolla

Carolla came under fire by GLAAD in 2011, after going on a shocking <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2011/08/15/glaad-adam-carolla-lgbt-lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender-the-adam-carolla-show-podcast-loveline-comedy-intolerance-transgender/#.T1d4UJfLyRk" target="_hplink">anti-LGBT tirade on a podcast</a> for his radio show, asking, "When did we start giving a sh*t about these [transgender] people?" He also reportedly insisted the acronym LGBT should be dropped in favor of using "YUCK" instead. Carolla <a href="http://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/838735/adam-carolla-apologizes-for-his-shocking-anti-gay-rant" target="_hplink">later apologized for the rant</a>, noting, "I'm sorry my comments were hurtful. I'm a comedian, not a politician."

  • Soulja Boy

Though he later claimed his account had been hacked, Soulja Boy got heat when the following message<a href="http://www.essence.com/2011/06/23/celebrity-homophobic-rants/#kobes_poor_courtside_behavioral" target="_hplink"> reportedly appeared on his Twitter</a>: "I'm gonna keep talking sh*t to these white f*ggots until they unlike my page. f**king weirdo stalkers!"

  • Tracy Morgan

Last year, the comedian came under fire for jokes he made during a stand-up act. <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2011/06/10/tracy-morgan-homophobic-act-rant-comedy-gay-threats-kill-son-30-rock/#.T1d3gpfLyRk" target="_hplink">Among the choice reported bits</a>: <blockquote>"Gays need to quit being p**sies and not be whining about something as insignificant as bullying." On the possibility of his son being gay -- Morgan said he "better talk to me like a man and not in a gay voice or I'll pull out a knife and stab that little n**ger to death." Afterward, Tracy told the crowd, "I don't "f*cking care if I piss off some gays, because if they can take a f*cking d**k up their ass, they can take a f*cking joke."</blockquote> Later, he <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/10/tracy-morgans-homophobic-remarks_n_874699.html" target="_hplink">apologized in a statement</a> to The Huffington Post: <blockquote>I want to apologize to my fans and the gay & lesbian community for my choice of words at my recent stand-up act in Nashville. I'm not a hateful person and don't condone any kind of violence against others. While I am an equal opportunity jokester, and my friends know what is in my heart, even in a comedy club this clearly went too far and was not funny in any context.</blockquote>

  • Ronnie Magro ("Jersey Shore")

The "Jersey Shore" came under fire when <a href="http://www.queerty.com/jersey-shores-ronnie-fulfills-guido-stereotype-of-being-a-homophobe-20100215/" target="_hplink">"unseen footage" of the show surfaced</a>, in which he used the terms "f**king faggot" and "f**king queer" during an altercation with an unidentified man on the Seaside Heights boardwalk. TMZ reports the reality star <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2010/02/19/ronnie-jersey-shore-homophobic-rant-apology/" target="_hplink">later tweeted an apology</a>, noting, "I apologize to my fans, In the heat of the moment i said a lot of things i didnt mean and im very sorry."

  • Alan Osmond

Alan Osmond, who shot to fame in the late 1960s and early '70s as one of The Osmonds, took heat in November <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/09/alan-osmond-anti-gay-article_n_1084463.html" target="_hplink">for penning an article</a> that some in the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) blogsophere deemed homophobic. In his article for<a href="http://thefamily.com/" target="_hplink"> the website The Family</a>, the 62-year-old Osmond brother, who is Mormon, not only argued that being gay is not genetic, but also comes out in defense of "reparation" therapy, which is sought by those seeking to change their sexual orientation: <blockquote>Research has NOT proved that homosexuality is genetic. Even more important, many researchers whose studies have been used to support a biological model for homosexuality have determined that their work has been MISINTERPRETED. What is clear is that homosexuality results from an interaction of social, biological, and psychological factors. These factors may include temperament, personality traits, sexual abuse, familial factors, and treatment by one's peers.</blockquote> Before noting that "treatment success rates that exceed 50 percent," Osmond continued: <blockquote>Developmental factors aside, can individuals diminish homosexual attraction and make changes in their lives? Yes. There is substantial evidence, both historical and current, to indicate this is the case.</blockquote>

  • 50 Cent

The rapper was slammed <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/50cent/status/23161813105" target="_hplink">after he tweeted</a>: "Perez Hilton calld me douchebag so I had my homie shoot up a gay wedding. wasnt his but still made me feel better." He was also called particularly insensitive <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/50cent/status/25954812348" target="_hplink">when he tweeted:</a> "If you a man and your over 25 and you don't eat pu**y just kill your self damn it. The world will be a better place. Lol"

  • Donna Summer

With her danceable music and glamorous style, Donna Summer became an instant icon for the gay community during her 1970s heyday. So when she allegedly made a number of religion-inspired remarks about the gay community as well as HIV/AIDS during a 1983 performance, the "Queen of Disco" faced an immediate backlash. "It was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve," Summer was quoted as having said during the Atlantic City concert by the <em>Village Voice</em>. She is said to have also noted, "I've seen the evil homosexuality come out of you people... AIDS is the result of your sins. Now don't get me wrong; God loves you. But not the way you are now." She denied making the remarks for years afterward, calling the accusations "unjust and unfair." Summer noted in a letter addressed to members of ACT UP, "I did not say God is punishing gays with AIDS, I did not sit with ill intentions in judgement over your lives. I haven't stopped talking to my friends who are gay, nor have I ever chosen my friends by their sexual preferences."

RI home lived in while family was on vacation - Times Union

BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) ? In a stunt straight out of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears," a Rhode Island family came home from a weeklong vacation to find that someone had been living in their house.

Tracy Woodard of Barrington tells WJAR-TV (http://bit.ly/12I4Kim ) the family found wet towels and blankets strewn about the house, someone's underwear on the couch, and condom wrappers and marijuana left behind. She says whoever broke in also made cookies.

The family says the intruders took alcohol, cash and other valuables from the home and caused damage, including breaking some doors.

Woodard says the unwanted guests had taped blankets over the home's glass doors so neighbors couldn't see in.

Barrington police Chief John LaCross says officers are investigating, but no arrests have been made.

Microsoft's new logo is big business for one Seattle sign-maker (slide show)

    BUSINESS JOURNAL | Karen Ducey

Kelly Garrett, account executive for Trade-Marx, with a company banner and signs. Trade-Marx is a small Seattle sign company that has been contracted by Microsoft to replace all its signs with new ones reflecting their new company logo.

Last year, Microsoft changed its logo. It ditched the old "waving flag" version of the Window and introduced a simpler four-block design. It was crisp, clean. Designers discussed it. Bloggers extrapolated what the design meant about the future of the company.

But one Seattle company jumped into high gear. Trade-Marx has been building high-end signs in Seattle since 1969 and, late last year, it won the contract to build 350 new signs for Microsoft's Redmond and Bellevue campuses.

The company, which builds the signs by hand in a warehouse in Seattle's Sodo neighborhood, actually built the first Microsoft sign 30 years ago, and has been the exclusive sign-maker for Boeing for 24 years. Founder Don Jarvis hand-painted the first Red Robin restaurant sign in 1969, and the company has done the signs for the Chihuly Garden and Glass, EMP Jumbotron, University of Washington tower and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

This new contract for Microsoft, though, is the largest single contract Trade-Marx has ever had; the company has been working exclusively on the Microsoft contract since April. Recently, Trade-Marx installed the new signs on Microsoft's high-rise buildings in Bellevue.

"The economy has been slow, but now people are buying signs again," said Kelly Garrett, who was the Trade-Marx project manager for the Microsoft signs.

"It's a good sign Microsoft is doing this now," he added without a hint of irony.

So, what's next for Trade-Marx? Garrett and his team of 35 sign-makers will begin a project for the Pike Place Market replacing the current signage with 75 new signs which, he said, will help make it easier for visitors find their way around the market.

For more on Trade-Marx, see the story in the July 26 print edition of the Puget Sound Business Journal (subscription required for the first 30 days).
