Student arrested in Cairo says he feared for life (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Three American college students detained for several days in Cairo as deadly protests swept Egypt have flown home to freedom, one describing an ordeal so terrifying he wasn't sure he would survive.

"I was not sure I was going to live," 19-year-old Georgetown University student Derrik Sweeney told The Associated Press by telephone moments after his relieved parents and other family members enveloped him in hugs as he got off a flight in St. Louis.

Sweeney, the last of the three to arrive late Saturday, recounted how tear gas clouded Cairo's streets and he heard armored vehicles and what sounded like shots being fired just before his arrest a week earlier. Suddenly, the drama involving thousands of demonstrators in the streets had become intensely personal.

Egyptian authorities later announced they had arrested Sweeney and two others ? Luke Gates, a 21-year-old Indiana University student from Bloomington, Ind., and Gregory Porter, a 19-year-old Drexel University student from Glenside, Pa. All three were studying at American University in Cairo, which is near Tahrir Square.

Protests have been going on in the square since Nov. 19 in anticipation of the landmark parliamentary elections due to start Monday. The crowd grew to more than 100,000 people Friday, and thousands were gathering Sunday for another massive demonstration calling for the nation's military leaders to hand power back to a civilian government.

Egyptian officials said they arrested the students on the roof of a university building and accused them of throwing firebombs at security forces fighting with protesters. But Sweeney said Saturday that he and the other Americans "never did anything to hurt anyone," weren't ever on the roof and never handled or threw explosives.

Sweeney said he and the others were told by a group the night of their arrest that they would be led "to a safe place" amid the chaos engulfing the nearby square. Next, he said, they found themselves being taken into custody, hit and forced to lay for about six hours in a near fetal position in the dark with their hands behind their backs.

The worst, he said, was when they were threatened with guns.

"They said if we moved at all, even an inch, they would shoot us. They were behind us with guns," Sweeney said in the brief interview.

That night in detention ? "probably the scariest night of my life ever" ? gave way to much better treatment in ensuing days, he said. Sweeney didn't elaborate on who he believed was holding him the opening night but he called the subsequent treatment humane.

"There was really marked treatment between the first night and the next three nights or however long it was. The first night, it was kind of rough. They were hitting us; they were saying they were going to shoot us and they were putting us in really uncomfortable positions. But after that first night, we were treated in a just manner ... we were given food when we needed and it was OK."

He also said he was then able to speak with a U.S. consular official, his mother and a lawyer. He said he denied the accusations during what he called proper questioning by Egyptian authorities.

A court ordered the students' release Thursday, and they took separate flights out of Cairo on Saturday. Porter and Gates arrived in their home states earlier Saturday, greeted by family members in emotional airport reunions.

Neither Gates nor Porter recounted details of their experience.

"I'm not going to take this as a negative experience. It's still a great country," said Gates, shortly after getting off a flight in Indianapolis. His parents wrapped their arms around him.

Porter was met by his parents and other relatives at Philadelphia International Airport. He took no questions, saying he was thankful for the help he and the others received from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, administrators at the university they were attending, and attorneys in Egypt and the U.S.

"I'm just so thankful to be back, to be in Philadelphia right now," he said.

Joy Sweeney said waiting for her son had been grueling.

"He still hasn't processed what a big deal this is," she told the AP before his arrival in St. Louis, about 130 miles east of their home in Jefferson City, Mo.

She said she was trying not to dwell on the events and was just ecstatic that her son was coming home before the close of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Talks resume with Christmas Day schedule in jeopardy (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? NBA owners and players met on Friday to try to reach an agreement that would salvage the league's Christmas Day marquee schedule.

The two sides met on Monday and reconvened on Friday afternoon in New York for a settlement conference that continued into the night.

The negotiations are the first since the players rejected the owners' last proposal on November 14, which included a 72-game schedule beginning on December 15.

Since then, the players union has been disbanded and the players filed an anti-trust lawsuit against the league in Minnesota. The league filed a suit in New York seeking to prove the lockout is legal.

Local media has reported that if the two sides reached an agreement over the weekend the NBA would open a 66-game schedule on Christmas Day, featuring an NBA Finals rematch between the defending champion Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat.

However, if they are unable to come to a resolution the entire season is likely to be wiped out.

Any agreement would require 50 percent approval from the owners and players. Complicating the matter is that the players would have to drop their lawsuit, reform the union, and then vote to accept the deal.

Participating in the latest talks on behalf of the owners are Commissioner David Stern, deputy commissioner Adam Silver, San Antonio Spurs owner Peter Holt.

The players are represented by the leaders of the disbanded union including Billy Hunter, Derek Fisher and Mo Evans.

Mazda's i-ELOOP does regenerative braking with capacitors instead of batteries

i-ELOOP
Mazda has decided there's simply no reason why hybrid cars and EVs should have all of the regenerative braking fun. Its new system, called i-ELOOP, is aimed at traditional internal combustion vehicles. But, rather than rely on batteries, the company turned to capacitors which can be charged and discharged in just seconds. The electricity generated is then fed to the car's various electronic components after being passed through a converter to step down the voltage to 12v. By alleviating some of the burden to generate power from the engine Mazda claims it can increase fuel efficiency by up to ten percent. You won't have to wait long to see this tech make it into your next ride either, the world's first capacitor-based regenerative braking system should be making its retail debut sometime in 2012. Check out the PR after the break.

Longhorns beat Aggies 27-25 in thriller (AP)

COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? Texas spoiled Texas A&M's going away party.

Justin Tucker kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give the Longhorns a 27-25 victory over Texas A&M on Thursday night in the likely end of a more than century-old rivalry.

Texas A&M's last Big 12 game and the 118th meeting between these bitter rivals before the Aggies depart for the Southeastern Conference next season was a thriller befitting one of college football's oldest and most storied matchups.

The Aggies were down 24-19 before Ryan Tannehill found Jeff Fuller on a 16-yard touchdown pass with 1:48 remaining. But the 2-point conversion failed, leaving A&M (6-6, 4-5 Big 12) ahead 25-24.

The Longhorns' winning drive was helped by a 15-yard personal foul penalty and a 25-yard run by quarterback Case McCoy.

McCoy started Thursday after being benched after a loss to Oklahoma in favor of David Ash.

McCoy struggled to move the offense for much of the game, but he was able to do just enough to get the Longhorns in position for Tucker's winner.

Texas players spilled onto the field as soon as the kick sailed through the uprights. At the same time, thousands of dejected Aggies fans streamed to the exits in the end of this holiday tradition in this football-crazy state.

Receiver Jaxon Shipley threw a touchdown pass on a trick play in the first half and the Longhorns took advantage of two interceptions in a 17-point third quarter to send the Aggies off with a loss.

Carrington Byndom's interception return for a touchdown early in the third quarter cut Texas A&M's lead to 16-14.

The Longhorns (7-4, 4-4) took a 17-14 lead on a 23-yard field goal later in the third.

Tannehill's third interception led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Cody Johnson to extend the Longhorns' lead to 24-16

At times the end of this bitter rivalry felt like a goodbye between longtime friends. The Longhorn band spelled out `Thanks A&M' while playing "Thanks for the Memories." Earl Campbell, who the Heisman Trophy at Texas in 1977, and Texas A&M's John David Crow, winner of the award in 1957, watched the game sitting side by side in golf cart in the corner of the stadium.

Texas A&M's collie mascot, Reveille, didn't share in the goodwill. She showed her dislike for the Longhorns by chewing on a small stuffed version of Bevo, the Texas mascot during the game.

Texas A&M's official fight song bids adieu to the Longhorns with the line "so long to the orange and white." But the Aggies didn't really want to say goodbye.

They'd hoped to continue the game, which began in 1894 and has been played every year since 1915, but the Longhorns said their schedule is full through 2018.

Countless great players and games have populated this series. Former Texas A&M coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's 1954 team, which survived his grueling camp in Junction, Texas, played the Longhorns. Crow, A&M's only Heisman winner, was a member of the first Aggie team to beat Texas at Memorial Stadium in 1956. It was against the Aggies in 1998 that the Longhorns' Ricky Williams broke the Division I-A career rushing record in a 26-24 win.

Campbell had the best game of his Texas career against the Aggies when he ran for 222 yards and three touchdowns, and scored on a 60-yard pass in a 57-28 win by the Longhorns in 1977.

Fans were welcomed to the game with a prerecorded message on the Jumbotron by former Texas A&M defensive end/linebacker Von Miller. The crowd roared as Miller, the second overall pick in this year's draft, encouraged the Aggies to win.

On Thursday, Ben Malena caught his first career pass for a 7-yard touchdown on A&M first drive to make it 7-0. He was filling in for A&M's 1,000-yard rusher Cyrus Gray, who missed the game with a stress fracture in his left shoulder.

Randy Bullock pushed A&M's lead to 10-0 later in the first quarter with a 49-yard field goal.

The Longhorns couldn't get anything going on offense early and didn't get a first down until the last play of the first quarter.

Texas A&M was up 13-0 after another field goal in the second quarter before Texas used a trick play where Shipley threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Blaine Irby to cut the lead to six.

Shipley returned after missing the last three games with a knee injury.

Another field goal by Bullock left A&M up 16-7 at halftime.

Tannehill was 20 of 49 for 224 yards and Fuller had a season-high seven receptions for 107 yards.

The Longhorns' normally potent running game didn't do much with Malcolm Brown leading the group with 17 carries for 39 yards.

Pandora shares fall on fears of competition, outlook (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Shares of Pandora Media fell more than 10 percent on Wednesday after the online streaming music service company gave a muted fourth-quarter outlook.

The company posted higher-than-expected third-quarter earnings and revenue after the market closed on Tuesday.

Investors shrugged off that news and focused on broader concerns about the company's growth potential, given a flock of competitors as well as executives' remarks about fourth-quarter revenue.

"We are not comfortable adding to shares at current levels due to valuation and the increased competitive threat from other social music platforms, despite differences in the business models compared to Pandora's Internet radio platform," Stifel Nicolaus analyst Jordan Rohan wrote in a note to investors on Wednesday.

Stifel Nicolaus has a "hold" rating on Pandora stock.

Pandora, which has been around for a decade, runs a mostly free service that recommends different songs based on listener's playlists. Almost 90 percent of its revenue comes from advertising.

The company faces competition on all flanks, from traditional radio companies such as Clear Channel, which has started its own customized online streaming service; satellite radio providers such as Sirius XM Radio Inc; and Spotify, which allows users to integrate its streaming music through Facebook.

Investors had been eagerly awaiting Pandora's initial public offering in June, but the stock price has sunk about 32 percent since then. The company's market capitalization is roughly $2 billion.

Pandora said it expected fourth-quarter revenue of $80 million to $84 million. Rohan wrote that was "below previously implied guidance of $83 million at the mid-point."

During a conference call with analysts on Tuesday, Pandora said it was taking a responsible approach to its forecast, keeping a watchful eye on advertisers who might cut back on fears of a wider economic downturn.

"There's no impact at the moment, but we are paying close attention to what's going on in the marketplace," Pandora Chief Financial Officer Steve Cakebread said during the call.

Shares of the company were down 10.5 percent at $10.60 in morning trading.

Soyuz with three astronauts lands in Kazakhstan (AP)

MOSCOW ? A Russian Soyuz capsule carrying three astronauts back from the International Space Station touched down safely in the snow-covered steppes of Kazakhstan early Tuesday morning.

NASA astronaut Michael Fossum, Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov and Satoshi Furukawa of Japan's JAXA space agency landed at the break of dawn some 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of the town of Arkalyk at 8:26 a.m. (0226 GMT) after spending 165 days in space.

The landing was close to its target point.

NASA spokesman Josh Byerly said in the NASA television broadcast that the recovery operation was swift despite the freezing weather and strong wind.

Video from the site showed the Soyuz capsule, blackened by the intense heat of re-entry, lying on its side as the astronauts were extracted.

The three men looked well and smiling, although Furukawa looked visibly exhausted. They were seated in chairs and wrapped in warm blankets to help them get adjusted to gravity after spending four months in space.

Valery Lyndin, spokesman for the Russian Mission Control Center, said all three astronauts are in good health.

NASA's Dan Burbank and Russians Anton Shkaplerov and Anatoly Ivanishin remain onboard the International Space Station and are due to return to Earth in March. They arrived at the station on Wednesday. A launch next month will take the station back to its normal six-person crew.

The school year may already be in full swing, but on Wednesday, fans will get their first glimpse of Snoop Dogg and Wi Khalifa's "Mac & Devin Go to High School" film when the smoked-out duo premiere the video for "Young, Wild & Free" on MTV.

Starting at 6 a.m. ET the video will debut across MTV, MTV2, mtvU, MTV Hits, MTV.com and MTV Jams, where it will play every hour. Directed by Dylan Brown, "Young, Wild & Free," featuring Bruno Mars on the hook, is the first video from the official "Mac & Devin Go to High School" soundtrack.

While integrating movie scenes into music videos sometimes gets cumbersome, Dogg and Khalifa worked things out by cleverly filming the clip in a Montclair, California, drive-in theater.

"We got some more party scenes where we just gonna be doing our verses and having the scenes from the movie play on the big screen from the actual movie 'Mac & Devin Go to High School,' " Snoop told MTV News on the video set back in October. "So people get a chance to see a few scenes and see us perform at the same time."

In one particular scene, the pair race in off-road karts, with some choice video models in tow. "We just getting it crackin' in the parking lot, man, turning this thing out, so we had a couple of our little friends in the car and we drove fast," Wiz said.

"I had to level out the playing field; I had some weight issues so I had a couple of girls roll with me to level out my car," Snoop jokingly added.

The song is a carefree affair, with Mars singing, "So what we get drunk, so what we smoke weed/ We're just having fun, we don't care who sees" on the track's hook.

Keeping in tune with the single's theme, Wiz raps about rolling up and sagging his jeans while Snoop rhymes like he's 17 years old all over again. Khalifa teases that the entire soundtrack will carry a similar mood. "We got the homey Juicy J on the soundtrack, we got Curren$y on the soundtrack, but mainly it's just me and Dogg," he said. "It's a real big deal because nobody's done it like that as far as a veteran, an O.G. in the game, a pioneer, and then the newest, youngest, most exciting dude in rap coming through and really just giving the people a complete project."

"The music is quality," Snoop said.

Should Obama decline to run for re-election? (The Week)

New York ? President Obama is a divider, argue two Democratic pollsters. He ought to step aside and make room for a real uniter... Hillary Clinton

In a controversial Wall Street Journal opinion piece published Monday, Democratic pollsters Patrick H. Caddell and Douglas E. Schoen argue that President Obama should not run for re-election. To win, they argue, the unpopular Obama would have to go very negative against his GOP opponent, further dividing the country and making it impossible to lead for another four years.?Instead, they say, the president should learn from Harry Truman and Lyndon Johnson, who "accepted the reality that they could not effectively govern the nation if they sought re-election," and opted not to seek another term.?And that would make room for "the only leader capable of uniting the country around a bipartisan economic and foreign policy": Hillary Clinton. Obama's former rival and current Secretary of State has said repeatedly that she?won't run. Should she reconsider?

This is so crazy it just might work: Just like Truman and Johnson, Obama is a Democrat involved in an unpopular war who prefers "passing the buck and blame" to Congress, says Andrew Malcolm at Investor's Business Daily. Clinton, on the other hand, has excelled heading the State Department. Should the Supreme Court toss out "ObamaCare" in 2012, a Clinton candidacy would free Democrats "of that unpopular, costly political liability." And despite her protestations, if Obama bowed out and Clinton's party seriously asked her to jump in, it's hard to believe that she wouldn't run ? and win.
"The 'Dump Obama' movement has begun; Guess who'd replace him?"

But Hillary wouldn't win either: These days, Clinton gets to play the august Secretary of State, removed from the dirty politics of a campaign, says Bryan Preston at Pajamas Media. That's why she's polling so well. Most Americans "don't remember what a divisive force she was during her husband's terms," not to mention during her 2008 presidential bid. But a candidate Clinton "would quickly remind Americans that she is every bit as far to the left as Obama," except with "less charisma."
"Caddell and Schoen: Obama should drop pout and let Hillary run"

Plus, Obama is doing fine: Caddell and Schoen portray Obama's poll numbers as far more dismal than they actually are, says Andrew Sullivan at The Daily Beast. The country is suffering through the worst economic downturn since the 1930s. And yet, the president is "neck and neck with a generic Republican challenger." Other polls show Obama leading every single GOP candidate in the race. "A president with 9 percent unemployment leading most GOP rivals by 8 points or more is not a lame duck by any means."
"The Schoen-Caddell two-step"

(AP) ? Vitaly Shlykov, a former Soviet intelligence agent who spent years in a Swiss prison after being convicted of espionage and later became an internationally known military analyst, has died at 77.

Shlykov died of a heart condition over the weekend at his apartment in Moscow, the Council for Foreign and Defense Policy confirmed Monday. Shlykov was one of the founders of the council, which advises the Kremlin on security issues.

Following his retirement from Soviet military intelligence in 1988, he served from 1990 to 1992 in the government of Russia's first president, Boris Yeltsin, as deputy head of a committee for public security.

In more recent years, Shlykov helped engineer a radical reform of the Russian military to shed its Cold War legacy and turn it into a modern force.

Shlykov joined Soviet military intelligence in 1958 after graduating from Moscow's Institute of International Relations. He served for 30 years in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Russian General Staff, known under its Russian acronym of GRU.

During his GRU career, he worked as a senior analyst specializing in assessing the military industries of the United States and other Western nations. He made frequent trips to the West on a false American passport.

One of his duties was to maintain contacts with Dieter Felix Gerhardt, a senior officer of the South African Navy who was working as a Soviet spy. In January 1983, Shlykov was arrested on a trip to Zurich while carrying the equivalent of about $100,000 in cash to hand over to Gerhardt's wife, who was supposed to serve as a liaison.

Soviet intelligence was unaware that Gerhardt and his wife had been arrested a few weeks earlier and had told interrogators about the meeting in Switzerland.

Realizing after the arrest that his cover had been blown, Shlykov claimed he was a Soviet citizen who had emigrated to the West ? another false identity he was supposed to offer in just such a case.

He never revealed his true identity to the Swiss police, and in 1984 was convicted of espionage and sentenced to three years in prison. He was released early for good behavior and returned to the Soviet Union in 1986.

After his retirement two years later, he became a prominent scholar specializing in military policy and wrote extensively on security issues.

Shlykov strongly backed the Kremlin's military reform, intended to radically cut the bloated and inefficient Russian military and turn it into a more modern and agile force. His support contrasted sharply with that of many other military veterans, who insisted the reforms were destroying the military.

In a 2010 interview with The Associated Press, Shlykov described the effort as "the most radical reform of the Russian military in 150 years" and said it should make the armed forces more capable.

Shlykov first spoke to the media about his espionage experience two decades after quitting the service.

"During my life span, I have lived several lives, full of tension and excitement," he said in a 2006 interview with Radio Liberty.

He is to be buried Tuesday at Troyekurovsky Cemetery.

How Social Media Revived The Muppets (Mashable)

The Muppets are back! On Nov. 23, Walt Disney Pictures is bringing its next live-action Muppet film, aptly-named The Muppets, to movie theatres across the country. The film release is the culmination of a multi-pronged marketing campaign that has embraced the social and digital spheres, and in the process, helped reinvigorate the Muppet brand.

[More from Mashable: 6 Historic Events as They Might Have Been Tweeted]

It's rare to see such solid execution on so many digital and social channels and for that reason, we wanted to take a deeper look at the various aspects of Disney's and The Muppets Studios' efforts.

Going Viral to Revive Interest in a Brand

Over the last two years, The Muppet Studios has embarked on a proactive social and viral campaign. It all started with an epic cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody", and was followed by more songs, iPhone apps and responses to episodes of Internet backlash with just the right amount of aplomb and visual humor.

[More from Mashable: 3 Mistakes Web Programmers Need to Stop Making]

In retrospect, the timing of these viral video endeavors was perfect. It coincided with the original announcement that a new Muppet film would be coming to theaters.

Getting the Right People Involved

The key to a successful project, especially when it involves a storied and beloved brand, is having the right people on board.

Jason Segel co-wrote the script for the film alongside his Forgetting Sarah Marshall director Nicholas Stoller. If you've seen Marshall, you know why this is important. Both men are bonafide Muppet fanatics and already had a working relationship with the Jim Henson Company.

After Disney decided to greenlight the project, two members of Flight of the Conchords -- James Bobin and Bret McKenzie -- signed on to direct and handle music supervising duties. Amy Adams also signed on to star in the film alongside Segel, Kermit, Miss Piggy and the rest.

As a huge fan of The Muppets, I know my interest in the film was greatly enhanced by the fact that Segel was so involved with the script and the storyline. There is a sense of trust that the brand, characters and situations will be handled properly.

Using Social Effectively

Over the last eight months, Walt Disney Pictures has done a lot to virally and socially promote The Muppets across social channels.

In fact, we would go as far as to say that the campaign for The Muppets is one of the most socially savvy we have seen from any studio for a major release window. Let's take a look at some of the ways social and digital have come together to promote the film, connect fans and spread the word.

Facebook

The official Muppets Facebook page has more than 1.1 million fans and individual characters like Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and Animal have their own fan pages and campaigns. The Facebook pages have been well-utilized to spread informational and video content.

Disney also created The Muppets Fan-A-Thon on Facebook to entice fans to "Like" various characters, pages and videos in a bid to unlock advance screenings. Cheekily asking for "1 bazillion likes," the campaign has yielded over 2 million likes since it started.

Twitter

The Disney acquired the game maker Tapulous back in 2010, so it makes sense that Tap Tap Muppets would hit iOS. Mobile video app Viddy also has special pack that lets users insert characters from The Muppets into their videos.

Google+

The Muppets was one of the first brands to join Google+ and its YouTube has had a huge role to play in promoting the film and the brand itself.

Not only have Disney and Muppets Studios used YouTube to great effect in creating viral music videos, they also created movie trailer parodies spoofing other blockbuster films like The Hangover Part II and The Green Lantern.

Most recently, YouTube was used to release a new video preview of The Muppets Soundtrack, using commenters from negative YouTube users to pepper the soundtrack preview. We love it.

Saturday Night Live

Of course, no media campaign would be complete without involving traditional outlets. Jason Segel hosted Saturday Night Live last night and his monologue included some special guests (above).

The Box Office Test

Early reviews for The Muppets are overwhelmingly positive, and the film is tracking to be a big success at the box office. Still, we'll have to wait until the 23rd to see if all the social campaigning and digital interaction have paid off.

I'm going to see The Muppets over the holiday weekend. What about you?

Samsung Focus S review

Samsung Focus S
The deluge of Mango devices isn't over yet. Hot on the heels of the Lumia 800, the Titan, Radar and the wallet-friendly Focus Flash comes the Samsung Focus S. There's not a whole lot of mystery to Sammy's flagship Windows Phone 7.5 handset. It's not terribly different from many of its cousins packing Microsoft's mobile OS and, other than size, there doesn't seem to be anything separating it from its little brother, the Flash. What, then -- aside from a few Galaxy S design touches -- does the Flash offer your high-end smartphone dollar? And are those differentiators enough to make it the clear choice when shopping for WP7 device -- especially when considering the $150 premium AT&T is asking for, over the surprisingly satisfying Flash. Head on past the break to find out.

Dylan McDermott Doesn't Mind Being Hit on Gay Men (omg!)

Dylan McDermott Doesn't Mind Being Hit on By Gay Men

Given his recent nude scene on American Horror Story, it's no wonder why men and women alike have the hots for Dylan McDermott.

"I knew going into it that there was nudity and that a lot of people would be watching, so I knew I had to be in really good shape," the 50-year-old tells The Advocate.

PHOTOS: Celebrity LGBT allies

"I'm no fool, so I hit the gym and watched what I ate. Actually, when I first got the role, production called me and asked, 'Who's your body double?' I said, 'Oh, hell no. It's going to be all me, baby.'"

McDermott -- a divorced father of two -- says that while he's grown accustomed to being nude on set, he doesn't let it all hang out in between takes.

PHOTOS: Out and proud celebs

"When I'm in the role, in the moment, I'm comfortable," he explains. "After they yell 'cut,' I don't need to put my balls in someone's face."

Since American Horror Story's premiere episode (where the actor revealed his bare butt on camera), McDermott says he's been hit on by more gay fans than ever before.

"Honestly, I'm cool with everyone, and people pick up on that. I'd say, 'I'm not gay, but it's all good,'" McDermott tells The Advocate. "It's kind of like going to Paris when you don't know the language: some Americans get into trouble over there, but I'm just like, 'Sorry, I don't speak French.'"

Don?t Be Too Disappointed By Google Music?s Lackluster Debut

goomuThe web is less than enthused by Google Music, which made its debut today with the usual fanfare. The criticism is withering in the usual semi-entitled way. "Where's the Spotify killer?" "Rdio already does this!" "So it's basically iTunes match?" There are two things the critics decline to acknowledge: that Google is providing a simple, free service, and that all Google products start out underwhelming and gradually expand. Android was a mess when it showed up. And it's still a mess — a mess blowing up to the tune of half a million devices a day. We all know Google doesn't ship complete products. So why do we waste our breath in day-one aspersion or praise when it's going to be a new Music down the line?

Panel urges US scrutiny of China military, firms (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A congressional advisory panel urged the Obama administration and Congress on Wednesday to apply more scrutiny to China's military expansion and signs of aggressiveness. The group also pressed for a tougher U.S. stance against what it called anticompetitive Chinese trade policies.

As President Barack Obama announced a new security agreement with Australia aimed at China's growing military presence in Asia, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission said Beijing's buildup is aimed squarely at countering America's defenses and exploiting weaknesses.

The commission recommended that the Government Accountability Office evaluate the ability of the Pentagon's early warning system to detect an attack from China's military wing, the People's Liberation Army. The group also said that suspected Chinese cyber-intrusions remained high in 2011 and may have interfered with the operations of at least two U.S. space satellites.

"The PLA's military strategy is designed to provide the army with the means to defeat a technologically superior opponent, such as the U.S. military," the commission said. That strategy, it added, is aimed at "degrading an opponent's technological advantages and striking first in order to gain surprise."

The Chinese military has pressed a full-scale upgrade of its weaponry in recent years while at the same time striking a more combative pose in the South China Sea. Since January, the commission noted, the Chinese military tested the latest model of its next-generation fighter jet, sent its first aircraft carrier on a maiden trial and is developing an anti-ship ballistic missile.

Those efforts follow a tense 2009 skirmish between U.S. and Chinese warships in the South China Sea and several years of strains between China and neighboring countries following several sea-based disputes.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has pushed for a process that would resolve those disputes, but recently backed the Philippines in its protest of China's territorial claim on an island chain long tied to the Philippines.

The report echoed recent Pentagon warnings about possible Chinese cyber-intrusions aimed at sensitive U.S. defense and intelligence sites and at American companies. It said such suspected intrusions came at a "substantial volume" in 2011 and that China "has identified the U.S. military's reliance on information systems as a significant vulnerability."

In recent years, the commission said, two U.S. government satellites "have experienced interference apparently consistent with the cyber-exploitation of their control facility." In January 2007, China demonstrated its satellite-killing capacity by firing a ballistic missile that destroyed an obsolete Chinese weather satellite. Fears of a collision with debris left from the satellite blast, the report noted, forced astronauts to evacuate the International Space Station last April.

Warning of China's growing upper hand in its economic relationship with the U.S., the commission suggested strengthening federal laws to stiffen "effective remedies against the anticompetitive actions of Chinese state-owned or state-invested enterprises."

The U.S. trade deficit with China increased 9 percent this year over the same period in 2010, and the imbalance with Beijing accounts for more than half of America's entire trade gap.

"China's foreign currency reserves are skyrocketing," the panel said, adding that those reserves are estimated at $3 trillion, three times higher than second-place Japan. At the same time, the report cautioned, China is grappling with inflation and the prospect of its own real estate bubble.

Worried about the pace and depth of Chinese investments, the commission recommended that the Commerce Department report annually on Chinese investment, particularly companies owned by the state. "China's investment policies are part of the government's plan to promote the development of key industries in China through access to foreign technology and capital," the report warned.

That prompted a strong dissent from William A. Reinsch, the panel's chairman, and a second commissioner, Robin Cleveland.

"These recommendations are not in and of themselves fatal flaws in our report, but they reflect a disturbing trend in our country towards economic nationalism," said Reinsch and Cleveland said. Reinsch, a former Commerce Department official and now president of the pro-business National Foreign Trade Council, issued a similar caution with Cleveland in last year's panel report.

SAP to invest more than $2 billion in China by 2015 (Reuters)

FRANKFURT (Reuters) ? German business software maker SAP (SAPG.DE) plans to invest more than $2 billion up to 2015 to expand its business in China.

It said in a statement on Tuesday it aims to hire about 2,000 people in China through 2015 and open five to six new offices across the country.

SAP told Reuters on Monday that the company is open to acquisitions in Asia and plans to hire more in the fast-growing China and India markets.

Asia has been a bright spot for SAP, whose portfolio includes designing software, databases and workflows for corporations.

Asia stocks rise as Europe stabilizes, Japan grows (AP)

BANGKOK ? Asian stocks rose sharply Monday after Japan's economy grew for the first time in four quarters and Europe moved closer to resolving a debt crisis that threatens to hurl the region into recession.

Benchmark oil hovered near $99 per barrel while the dollar gained against the euro but fell against the yen.

The Nikkei 225 index in Tokyo added 1.1 percent to 8,603.70. Hong Kong's Hang Seng surged 2.2 percent to 19,564.67 and South Korea's Kospi climbed 2.1 percent to 1,902.81

Benchmarks in Singapore, Australia, and mainland China were also higher.

Hopeful signs emerged over the weekend from Europe after Silvio Berlusconi reluctantly bowed to market pressure and resigned as Italy's premier. His successor, economist Mario Monti, faces the monumental task of enacting profound reforms aimed at preventing Italy from defaulting on its huge debts.

Unlike Greece, Portugal and Ireland ? which have received emergency financial help from international lenders ? Italy is considered much too big to bail out. Its next government must push through austerity measures to deal with euro1.9 trillion ($2.6 trillion) in debt.

"There is a silver lining from the past two weeks of political uncertainties in Greece and Italy," analysts at DBS Bank Ltd. in Singapore said in a report. "Both countries now have leaders who are not only closer to the European Union, but are also moving towards forming technocratic governments better suited to implement much needed reforms."

Investment confidence was also boosted after Japan released data showing its economy ? sent into recession by a record earthquake ? had surged in the latest quarter. The economy jumped 6 percent, the first expansion for the world's No. 3 economy in four quarters.

The surge comes as Japan claws its way out of a crisis stemming from an earthquake and tsunami that decimated factories across the country's northeast on March 11.

Since then, the country has steadily restored its factories, helping the economy rebound despite the threats of a financial crisis in Europe, slowing global economy and a strong yen.

In Greece, there was good news Friday, as former central banker Lucas Papademos was sworn in as interim prime minister following a political crisis that jeopardized the country's ability to continue receiving emergency loans.

Papademos must now get his government to agree to a debt deal that will net the country billions of euros in acutely needed rescue money ? provided that it enacts painful austerity measures including tax hikes and sharp cuts in public spending.

Without the rescue money, Greece's faces insolvency and a massive default on its debts ? an event that experts believe could set off a banking crisis and eventually blow up into an all-out European recession.

But some analysts suggested Europe's crisis was already beyond repair and that no realistic amount of budget-cutting or aid could revive Greece's comatose economy or relieve Italy of the mountain of IOUs that it is sitting on.

"I am not very optimistic. All those who think the euro has stabilized or that Europe has stability, I think they are wrong," said Tom Kaan of Louis Capital Markets in Hong Kong. "The risk is still very much out there."

Rising energy prices helped lift resource shares. Hong Kong-listed China Coal Energy Co. rose 4 percent. China National Offshore Oil Corp. gained 3.3 percent.

High-tech shares also advanced. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing rose 3.3 percent and South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor, the world's second-largest memory chip maker, added 3.9 percent.

A resumption of service by bullet trains that had been recalled following a deadly crash in July sent Chinese rail shares bounding. Hong Kong-listed China Railway Group soared 7 percent and China Railway Construction Co. jumped 7.1 percent.

State-owned Xinhua news Agency quoted a Ministry of Railways official as saying that the trains have been repaired and would start entering service on Wednesday.

Still, plenty of uncertainty hangs over financial markets as traders await U.S. economic data. Reports on October retail sales, inflation and housing data are due this week, starting Tuesday.

Despite its 2.5 percent growth rate last quarter, the U.S. economy remains fragile. The Federal Reserve recently lowered its economic outlook for 2012. The central bank predicted that the economy will grow at a rate of about 2.7 percent next year. That is a full percentage point below a forecast from June, and below the 3 to 5 percent annual growth rate that is considered healthy.

On Wall Street, stocks surged Friday after Italy and Greece moved closer to getting their financial crises under control.

The Dow Jones industrial average jumped or 2.2 percent to 12,153.68. The S&P 500 rose 1.9 percent to 1,263.85. The Nasdaq composite rose or 2 percent to 2,678.75.

Benchmark crude for December delivery was down 1 cent at $98.98 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.21 to settle at $98.99 in New York on Friday.

In currency trading, the euro rose to $1.3755 from $1.3747 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 77.14 yen from 77.17 yen.

Clean Out Fridge Day: Is this a really a holiday?

Clean Out Fridge Day is celebrated on Nov. 15. But what's the genesis of Clean Out Fridge Day?

When you have 365 days in a year, you have plenty of opportunity to assign holidays to the calendar.

For example, it's common knowledge in the US that the third Monday in February is Presidents' Day, a federal holiday honoring George Washington and Abraham Lincoln (although some state's choose not to merge the two presidential birthdays). And there's little question that the fourth Thursday in November is always Thanksgiving Day ? unless you live in Canada, where it's the second Monday of October

But, somehow, the arbitrary date of Nov. 15 became 'Clean Out Fridge Day.' Who came up with this bright idea?

Yes, of course, it's necessary to keep your refrigerator relatively clean, but why today?

Some speculate that it's to prepare one's fridge for all the holiday foods that will be consumed between now and Jan. 1, 2012. For some, it's an opportunity to stretch their gastronomical limits and try a new recipe.

Perhaps it's a cover for an economic stimulus plan. It's supposed to get people to inspect said refrigerator, realize their current cold storage needs are inadequate and need replacing. In fact, Cooksinfo.com traces the holiday to the Whirlpool Corporation in 1995. For a few years, Whirlpool promoted the third Wednesday in November. Apparently the company lost interest, but by 2000 it had become an "e-card" holiday, and took on a life of it's own.

Granted, it's something we all need to do from time to time, like getting our teeth cleaned or oil changed. But do we really need to be told when to do it?

(AP) ? After a tumultuous week that saw the departure and replacement of the Oscar show's host and producer, the film academy enjoyed a night of good vibes Saturday at its third annual Governors Awards. You might even say the force was with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Armed "Star Wars" storm troopers ensured guests were in their seats and paying attention as Darth Vader opened the evening honoring James Earl Jones, Oprah Winfrey and makeup artist Dick Smith. Under Vader's helmet was academy president Tom Sherak, who welcomed the audience of industry insiders with, "How was your week?"

Over the past week, Oscar producer Brett Ratner and host Eddie Murphy resigned and were replaced with producer Brian Grazer and host Billy Crystal. Ratner departed the Oscar show amid criticism of his use of a pejorative term for gay men at a screening of the director's action comedy "Tower Heist," which stars Murphy.

Saturday's untelevised Governors Awards, though, couldn't have been smoother, as Jones, Smith and Winfrey accepted Oscar statuettes in front of a starry crowd that included John Travolta, Alec Baldwin, Woody Harrelson, Sharon Stone, Seth Rogen, Sidney Poitier and Tyler Perry, among others.

Jones, who famously voiced Vader, accepted his award by video from London's Wyndham Theater, where he is starring in "Driving Miss Daisy" with Vanessa Redgrave. Baldwin and Glenn Close feted the actor before Sir Ben Kingsley presented him with his Oscar onstage in London.

Close called Jones "a world treasure" and Kingsley said the 80-year-old actor is "always so damn good."

A beaming Jones said receiving an Oscar in such a fashion is "an actor's wet dream."

"I'm deeply honored, mighty grateful and just plain gobsmacked," he said.

Smith, the groundbreaking makeup artist who counts "The Exorcist" and "The Godfather" among his credits, was lauded for his long career and his generosity in sharing the secrets of his craft. Writer-directors J.J. Abrams, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro saluted the 89-year old.

Abrams, creator of TV's "Lost" and "Fringe," said Smith "was the Beatles to me" and told of how he wrote a fan letter to the makeup artist and received an "old but clean" tongue from "The Exorcist" in return.

Smith said being honored by the academy was "an incredible joy, one of the greatest I've ever had in my whole life."

"I have loved being a makeup artist so much," he said, "but ... to have so much kindness given to me all at once is just too much. I am so grateful."

Winfrey was introduced by Quincy Jones, Travolta, Maria Shriver, producer Larry Gordon and a student she'd never met but whose education she funded.

Travolta said "the academy got it right" when it chose the media mogul to receive its Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, calling her "the most wonderful person in the world, the most magical person in the world and the most powerful person in the world."

Winfrey cried and nuzzled into boyfriend Stedman Graham as Shriver and the others spoke of her generosity, which includes providing scholarships for 65,000 students.

She said receiving an Oscar for philanthropy is "unimaginable" given her humble beginnings in Mississippi.

"It's impossible for you to even know what this journey has meant," Winfrey said.

Appearing in "The Color Purple" was "one of the greatest experiences of my life," she said, When Quincy Jones tapped her for the role of Sofia ? for which she earned an Oscar nomination for supporting actress ? he changed the course of her career.

"I'd like to do more films, but to receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award means more to me than any film, any acclaim, even an Oscar, because what it says is you all get it," Winfrey said. "What this really means is that you all understand that what I've been trying to do, what I've been trying to say all these years, (which) is that all of us can make a difference through the life that we live."

Winfrey said she plans to keep her new Oscar front and center on her desk.

"For me this Oscar will represent love from all of you," she said. "I thank you for your vote of love and I will use it to increase the open space in my heart to continue to do the great and good work that we all have come to do."

The film academy launched its Governors Awards three years ago to pay tribute to winners of honorary Oscars ? prizes previously presented during the Academy Awards telecast. Governors from its 15 branches chose Saturday's winners.

Highlights from the event will be available online at Oscars.org and included in the Academy Awards telecast in February.

Turkish forces shoot dead ferry hijacker (AP)

ANKARA, Turkey ? Turkish commandos in civilian clothes slipped onto a hijacked passenger ferry and posed as hostages before fatally shooting a suspected Kurdish rebel carrying explosives in a 12-hour drama that ended before dawn Saturday.

There were no other casualties aboard the Kartepe, that was hijacked on Friday after it left the northwestern port city of Izmit. There were 18 passengers on board, including five women, as well as four crew and two trainees, authorities said.

Despite the success of the raid, the hijacking drew attention to the conflict with Kurdish rebels who have stepped up attacks on government forces in the country's southeast this year. The Turkish military has responded by staging an air and ground offensive against rebel hideouts in neighboring Iraq. The rebels, who are considered terrorists by Turkey and the West, are seeking autonomy in Turkey's mostly Kurdish southeast.

Coast guard boats and helicopters had shadowed the vessel for much of its journey before it was forced to anchor off the port town of Silivri, west of Istanbul, Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin said.

The commandos prepared the raid while the police conducted lengthy negotiations with the lone hijacker, including a single communication that lasted over one hour, Sahin said.

Some commandos, who apparently climbed the vessel from rubber boats, mingled with the hostages before killing the suspect, he said.

"They were wearing civilian clothes and waited orders from us to go ahead," Sahin said.

Two passengers said they heard six gunshots from the captain's cabin, where the hijacker was located.

One of them, Ceyhun Sezer, told NTV television that they had watched the news about the hostage drama all night on TV screens in the passenger hall.

"He did not talk to us at all," said Sezer of the hijacker. "We saw the commandos, then heard three shots and then three more."

"The whole operation lasted at most 10 minutes," Sezer said.

Another passenger, Kadir Altunoglu, told NTV that he opened the door to other security forces after hearing the gunshots.

Sahin identified the hijacker as Mensur Guzel, and said he was armed with 450 grams of plastic explosives.

The minister said Guzel, born in 1984, was the head of the youth wing of the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, in the northwestern province of Kocaeli, and joined the rebels after escaping from the military in 2009.

The PKK has not claimed responsibility for the hijacking.

Sahin said that police launched the operation after the talks had failed.

"We tried to convince him to surrender for hours," Sahin said. "But he refused."

TRT television said police detained three suspected accomplices of the hijacker in Kocaeli.

The hijacker had collected some of the passengers' mobile phones but some others and crew members were able to make calls to authorities and their families.

"We were worried but I told them that we were fine," said Sezer in a telephone call to his family.

Hijacking is not a common tactic of the Kurdish rebels, though in 1998 security forces stormed a plane on the tarmac of Ankara airport, and shot and killed a Kurdish rebel armed with a hand grenade who held 38 people hostage aboard a Turkish Airlines plane. No passenger was injured.

In 1996, Chechen militants hijacked a Turkish ferry for four days in the Black Sea to attract world attention to Russia's military drive in Chechnya. The incident ended without any violence.

Tens of thousands of people have died since the Kurdish rebels took up arms in 1984. This year, rebel attacks have killed dozens of Turkish soldiers and civilians.

Turkish police have detained hundreds of Kurdish activists on suspicion of ties to the rebels. A government initiative to seek reconciliation with disaffected members of the ethnic minority has faltered, with each side accusing the other of failing to act in good faith.

The United States has been sharing drone surveillance data with Turkey to aid its fight against the Kurdish rebels. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said the United States deployed four Predator drones in Turkey ahead of the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq at the end of this year.

Davutoglu said the drones will fly surveillance missions out of the southern Incirlik Air Base as of Nov. 22 and their flight route will be determined by the Turkish military.
