Stock Market Investing ? A Gambler's Market | stock brokers

Something many people who have never invested money in the stock market want to know is how they can make money and not lose it in the stock market. How they can get a safe return on their money but make it more worthwhile than just putting the same amount of money into a boring savings account that will only make an average of 3 percent per year. The answer is, get a good stock broker, because they will often know the best possible deals that a lay person or newcomer will not know or will not think to ask. Good stock brokers will often have connections which make it easier for them to know which stocks to invest in at which time and how much to invest. They will know the risk of any particular stock as well as it?s potential gain, so it is wise to find a stock broker you can trust and stick with them.

Finding a good stock broker is often the luck of the draw but sometimes one can be found by asking around among people you know who have successfully invested their money and got back dividends. It is worth it to find a trustworthy stock broker, especially now that all of America knows what an untrustworthy one looks like. Take your time in researching a particular stock broker or company before giving money to them to invest. Make sure you find a stock broker who will take your calls and return messages promptly, one who acts as though you are important and realizes the value of customer service, otherwise you are just going to be disappointed and frustrated while someone you don?t like has access to one of your most important resources, your money. So be careful before choosing.

It is also wise to start studying the stock market and become familiar with the rises and falls, the ebb and flow, of certain stocks. See if you notice any patterns or any stock that looks promising yet holds little risk. See which industries follow growth trends and which ones indicate failure. Keep your eye on the public taste so you can know what will become more popular and what will become phased out. An often lucrative industry to invest in is the technology industry, and another one is social networking or any Internet stock really. Google is a great example of a lucrative stock. If you could find something like that and invest in it early you will be on the right track since the Internet is the present and the future and people are not going to get tired of it. Instead they will get more into their computers, until that crashes too. But people will not get enough of technology for a long time so it is a great field to invest in.

Something less lucrative, for example, would be something on its way out, such as Cd?s or floppy disks. When investing you always want to think of what will be the wave of the future, and leave the things of the past out of it. Even if a stock has performed historically well, if it is on its way out in terms of the culture and society and how useful it is, it is best not to invest in it. In stock market investing it is always more important to consider the present and future performance and popularity rather than the past.

Boston's bats finally fizzle in 4-3 loss to Royals (AP)

BOSTON ? The Boston Red Sox finally ran out of comebacks against the Kansas City Royals.

After scoring 25 runs in the previous two games, the Red Sox couldn't overcome an early deficit against Luke Hochevar and the Royals, who held on for a 4-3 win Thursday afternoon.

Dustin Pedroia pulled Boston within one with a solo homer in the eighth, extending his hitting streak to 25 games, but that was all the offense the Red Sox could come up with after beating the Royals 13-9 and 12-5 in the previous two games.

"They were one better than us today," said Pedroia, who has reached base in 37 straight games.

Billy Butler hit a three-run homer as Kansas City scored four in the fourth and Hochevar pitched seven strong innings to clinch a 2-2 series split for the Royals against the team with the best record in the American League.

Boston, which had to rally after falling behind in the last two games, took a 2-0 lead in the third, but the Royals came right back against starter Josh Beckett (9-4) in the fourth. Beckett walked Alex Gordon and Mitch Maier, then Butler blasted a 1-2 pitch over the wall in straightaway center.

"Your team scores two runs and then you walk the first two guys. That's pretty frustrating," Beckett said.

Hochevar (7-8) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk while matching his season high for strikeouts with six. He retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced and gave up just one extra-base hit, a third-inning double by Yamaico Navarro.

Hochevar left with a 4-2 lead, and Pedroia led off the eighth with a high home run over the Green Monster on a 3-2 pitch from Greg Holland. But Holland got Adrian Gonzalez, Kevin Youkilis and David Ortiz on groundouts to end the inning, and Joakim Soria came on to pitch the ninth.

With one out, Drew Sutton lined a hit off Soria's glove for a single, then pinch-hitter Carl Crawford hit a long fly ball that turned right-fielder Jeff Francoeur around before he made a basket catch on the warning track.

"I was getting up to celebrate," Boston manager Terry Francona said. "I thought he got plenty, then the wind knocked it down."

Soria struck out Navarro to earn his 19th save.

Beckett lost for the first time in a month, giving up four runs ? three earned ? on five hits and three walks while striking out eight. The Red Sox had won six of their last seven games to move to a season-high three games ahead of the second-place New York Yankees in the AL East before Thursday's loss.

Boston took a 2-0 lead in the third when Jason Varitek singled, Navarro doubled and they both scored on a single by Jacoby Ellsbury. But the Royals went ahead in the fourth when Beckett gave up back-to-back walks to start the inning and Butler followed with his 10th homer of the season. After Francoeur reached on a two-base error, Beckett gave up Mike Moustakas' RBI double to make it 4-2.

Pedroia led off the eighth inning with his homer over the Green Monster to cut the lead to one run. Fans knew Pedroia's hitting streak was on the line when he came up after going hitless in his first three at-bats and cheered him on before the towering homer. The cheers got louder when the ball left the park.

Francona said streaks aren't a topic that comes up in the dugout often, but credited the Boston fans for knowing what is going on throughout the lineup.

"We don't need to have president races or mustard racing ketchup. Our fans like our baseball and I actually really think that's cool," Francona said. "Nothing against mustard."

Notes: Pedroia's hitting streak is the longest in the American league this season, 11th longest in team history and longest ever for a Red Sox second baseman. ... Royals rookie Eric Hosmer extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a single to lead off the second. ... The Red Sox went without a hit from Gonzalez's single in the third until Drew Sutton led off the seventh with a blooper to center.

Serena sets up Sharapova showdown at WTA Stanford (AFP)

STANFORD, California (AFP) ? Serena Williams set up a marquee quarter-final clash with Maria Sharapova at the $721,000 WTA Stanford hardcourt tournament.

The 13-time Grand Slam champion, battling to regain her elite ranking status after a lengthy layoff for injury and illness, on Thursday defeated Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 3-6, 6-2.

"I'm sure we'll both go out and do the best each of us can," Williams said of her looming clash with Sharapova, another former world number one. "It's nothing personal. It's my job and I want to get paid. I leave it on the court."

After winning Wimbledon in 2010, Williams cut her foot and required surgery. She then dealt with blood clots in her lungs and ultimately was on the sidelines until her return at Eastbourne in June.

Stanford is her third tournament since last year's Wimbledon, and her first tournament on US soil since the 2009 US Open.

Williams took a medical timeout in her match to have her left ankle re-taped because of a blister.

But after Kirilenko won the second set and took the first game of the third, Williams seemed to wake up.

"I was a little sluggish out there," Williams admitted. "I got upset and started playing well enough to win. I started out fine, but after that injury timeout I was sluggish."

Williams said she's trying to be patient in setting the goals for her comeback, but she acknowledged she wants to win.

"If I say I just want to play well, it's a lie," she said. "Would I be happy about losing? When I'm playing I get a little psycho and on the edge."

Sharapova, the second seed, advanced on Wednesday with a win over Daniela Hantuchova.

Top-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, who defeated Sharapova in the final here last year, crashed out to New Zealand qualifier Marina Erakovic 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

Erakovic, ranked 121st in the world, stunned Azarenka and notched her first victory over a top-20 opponent and reached her second quarter-final of a season in which she has won 24 of her last 28 matches.

Belarus' Azarenka, ranked fourth in the world, arrived in Stanford for this hardcourt US Open tuneup off a semi-final appearance at Wimbledon.

She may have been a little rusty after the first-round bye given to the top four seeds.

Erakovic, 23, next faces eighth-seeded Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova.

"Coming in I knew I had to be the aggressor and try to dictate the pace," Erakovic said. "I knew the court and I felt like I was hitting the ball well."

Germany's Wimbledon semi-finalist Sabine Lisicki ousted fourth-seeded Australian Samantha Stosur 6-3, 7-5.

Stosur, who had reached the semi-finals here the past two years, teamed with Lisicki to reach the women's doubles final at Wimbledon.

Lisicki next faces fifth-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, who advanced on Wednesday with a win over Taiwan's Chang Kai-Chen.

Friday's remaining quarterfinal will pit French third seed against Japan's Ayumi Morita, a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 winner over qualifier Urszula Radwanska.

Study: Mexico homicides rose 23 percent in 2010 (AP)

MEXICO CITY ? The number of homicides in Mexico rose by nearly a quarter in 2010 compared to the year before as the drug war intensified across the country, Mexican statisticians said Thursday.

The National Institute of Statistics and Geography recorded 24,374 homicides over the course of last year, a 23 percent increase from 19,803 in 2009. Last year's figure represented 22 killings for every 100,000 residents in the country.

Many but not all of the homicides were committed by organized crime organizations, the institute told The Associated Press.

Violence has risen in many Mexican regions as a result of drug trafficking and other organized criminal activity. President Felipe Calderon's office has said that more than 15,000 homicides in 2010 were attributed to organized crime.

According to the statistics institute, the U.S.-bordering state of Chihuahua saw the highest number of homicides with 4,747. Sinaloa, in northwestern Mexico, registered 2,505.

Sinaloa is the headquarters of the Sinaoloa cartel, while Chihuahua includes the violent border city of Ciudad Juarez. Those two states are among the most affected by drug violence, and together they accounted for 29 percent of Mexico's homicides.

The institute cautioned that its information was preliminary and said it awaited definitive results that are to be released in September.

In the northern state of Zacatecas, prosecutors said a town mayor was found shot to death lying alongside a slain local farm union official Thursday, a day after they were kidnapped by gunmen.

The dead mayor, Fortino Cortes Sandoval, headed the city government in Florencia de Benito Juarez. Last week, soldiers killed six suspected cartel hitmen during a firefight on a highway linking Sandoval's city with the Teulada municipality.

A dozen mayors have been killed in Mexico since last year, many of them victims of violence related to drug cartels.

Two metric tons of marijuana were seized by authorities in Puerto Penasco, Sonora, about 60 miles (100 kilometers) from the U.S. border at Arizona, along with weapons and a vehicle, the Defense Department reported. No further details were available.

And military officials reported the seizure of 22 tons of ethyl phenylacetate in the port of Manzanillo in Colima state that had been shipped from Shekou, China. The chemical is used in the production of methamphetamine.

'Jeopardy!' host injured while chasing burglar (omg!)

SAN FRANCISCO - No one needed to buzz in with a question when "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek walked out on crutches at Google headquarters to host the National Geographic World Championship.

"The answer is, at 2:30 yesterday morning, chasing a burglar down the hall at my San Francisco hotel until my Achilles tendon ruptured and I fell in an ignominious heap to the carpeting," he explained Wednesday in the quiz show's signature answer-before-question format.

Lucinda Moyers, 56, was arrested on suspicion of felony burglary and possession of stolen property. She's accused of stealing cash, a bracelet and other items from the room where Trebek was staying with his wife, Jean.

On Thursday, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Jeff Ross set Moyers' bail at $625,000 and ordered her to stay at least 150 feet away from the Trebeks.

Moyers, in an orange jail jumpsuit, said "yes" when Ross asked if she wanted a public defender. Her arraignment was postponed until Monday.

In a jail interview, Moyers told KGO-TV that she didn't go into Trebek's hotel room and believes she was arrested because of her criminal record or because it was the host of a popular syndicated game show who reported the burglary.

"I haven't done nothing. I haven't gone in his room or nothing. Just like I said that night, 'I wasn't in your room.' And I stick by that. I wasn't in his room," Moyers said.

The public defender's office declined to comment on the charges but "looks forward to conducting an investigation on Ms. Moyers' behalf," said spokeswoman Tamara Aparton.

Trebek, 71, said he snapped the Achilles tendon while running after the woman around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. He is scheduled to have surgery Friday and is expected to be in a cast for six weeks.

Trebek, who has hosted "Jeopardy!" since 1984, told KNTV he was sleeping at the Marriott Marquis Hotel when he realized someone was inside his room looking through his belongings.

"I woke up and saw a figure in our hotel bedroom and I thought I was dreaming," he said. "A moment later, I got up and saw that the door was being held open by a wad of tissue. I opened the door and saw a woman walking away, and I realized immediately that someone had been in the room."

Trebek said he ran down the hall and confronted her.

"She came out of the little room where the ice machine is and I said, 'What were you doing in our room?'" Trebek said. "She said, 'I wasn't in your room!' I said, 'What are you doing up here?' She said, 'I was visiting friends.' I said, 'No, you weren't. Let's see what security has to say about that."

"As I reached for the phone to call security, she bolted. She ran down the hall. I chased her. And I didn't get more than 25 feet before my right Achilles tendon ruptured and I crashed to the ground."

The suspect was apprehended inside the hotel and most of the stolen items were recovered near the ice machine, but no cash was found, San Francisco police Lt. Troy Dangerfield said.

"We got most of our stuff back, except the one piece of jewelry that I ever wear," Trebek told KGO-TV. "It's a bracelet that my mother gave me many years ago, so that's gone, and cash."

It was unclear if Trebek was targeted or how the burglar got into his room, said Erica Derryck, a spokeswoman for the district attorney's office.

Derryck said Moyers has two prior residential burglary convictions in San Francisco from 1990 and 1991 and served time in state prison.

Prosecutors are still determining whether to charge Moyers under California's "three-strikes" law, which could result in a more extensive punishment if she's found guilty again, Derryck said.

No end in sight for FAA shutdown (AP)

WASHINGTON ? In Traverse City, Mich., work on replacing a 30-year-old air traffic control tower at Cherry Capital Airport has been halted. The job was about 40 percent completed, and crews had planned to lift the "cab" section to the top of the tower this week, airport manager Kevin Klein said.

But that was before a legislative stalemate between Republicans and Democrats in Congress forced the partial shutdown of the Federal Aviation Administration, the furlough of nearly 4,000 federal workers and the issuance of stop-work orders for dozens of airport construction projects across the country.

"It's very frustrating," Klein said. "It puts about 50 construction workers out of a job. But about 200 people are involved in this some way ? designers, engineers, vendors, delivery folks. It's going to be a hardship on them."

The FAA has also told airports to stop work on the installation of runway status lights, a new safety system aimed at preventing planes from colliding on the ground or taking off or landing on closed runways. At McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, construction officials were told Monday that they have until the end of the week to wrap up their work and then stop. Construction on a new airport tower has also been delayed.

"It's depressing," said Sasha Milosavljevich of Archer-Western Contractors, whose company broke ground June 2 on a new 352-foot control tower at McCarran. "You got a site that was flourishing with activity and there's nothing going on right now."

Prospects for quickly ending the legislative dispute between the House and Senate appear grim, with neither side signaling willingness to compromise. The FAA's operating authority expired last week. Air traffic controllers have continued to work, as well as FAA employees who inspect the safety of planes and test pilots.

Transportation officials have said safety won't be compromised. But it was unclear how long the FAA can continue day-to-day operations before travelers begin to feel the effects of the shutdown.

Rep. John Mica, R-Fla., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said there have been no negotiations between the House and Senate to resolve the dispute.

Republican leaders said they are determined to hold to their position that the Senate must accept a House-passed bill to extend FAA operations through mid-September even though it contains a provision eliminating $16.5 million in air service subsidies for 13 rural airports. Democrats say that provision is unacceptable.

"This is sort of sad, you know," Mica told reporters. "On the eve of the country's finances near collapse, it's sort of symbolic of the whole problem here ? no one is willing to eliminate any wasteful programs."

The subsidy program was created after airlines were deregulated in 1978 to ensure continued service on less profitable routes to remote communities. Not all those communities are remote anymore. The GOP provision would end subsidies to communities less than 90 miles from a hub airport or where subsidies average greater than $1,000 per passenger.

Democrats said the real issue is that Republicans are insisting Democrats accept a host of controversial provisions added to a long-term FAA spending bill approved by the House in April. Among their key differences is a GOP proposal sought by industry that would make it more difficult for airline workers to unionize.

The Senate passed its own long-term funding bill in February without the labor provision. Democrats insist the House must drop the provision. They've also accused Republicans of tying the elimination of rural air subsidies to their extension bill as a means to prod Democrats to make concessions on the labor issue.

"House Republicans are nowhere to be found, refusing to come back to the negotiating table after pulling yet another cheap political stunt at the expense of rural Americans," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said in a statement.

The shutdown is costing the FAA about $30 million a day in lost revenue because airlines no longer have authority to collect ticket taxes. That money goes into an aviation trust fund. The fund "has a healthy balance now, but that would be depleted in fairly rapid order" without congressional action, FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt said.

Fear over debt fight hits Wall St.; Dow loses 198 (AP)

Anxiety about a deadline to raise the nation's debt ceiling swept across Wall Street on Wednesday and drove the Dow Jones industrial average down almost 200 points. With Washington showing no sign it will find a solution, financial planners around the country said their clients were increasingly worried.

The Dow took a sharp drop during the last two hours of trading and closed down for the fourth session in a row. The declines have grown each day. The market turmoil was a sign that consequences of the debt fight were beginning to materialize in earnest.

With six days to go until the Treasury Department's Tuesday deadline ? raise the national borrowing limit or face an unprecedented federal default and unpredictable fallout in the economy ? analysts suggested the market would only grow more volatile.

"The longer we go without any type of hope or concrete plans for resolution, the more concerned investors are going to become," said Channing Smith, a managing director at the financial firm Capital Advisors Inc.

While no one was panicking, financial professionals who handle the investment accounts of everyday Americans ? college funds, retirement accounts and other nest-eggs ? said their customers were growing more worried by the day. One said he had not seen this level of anxiety since the 2008 financial crisis.

"We're getting a ton of calls," said Bob Glovsky, president of Mintz Levin Financial Advisors in Boston. "It's all `What happens if the U.S. defaults? What's going to happen to me?'"

The Dow finished the day down 198.75 points, at 12,302.55. About half of the decline came between 2 and 4 p.m., when the market closes for the day. It was the worst fall for the Dow since June 1, with 28 of the 30 component stocks losing value.

While the decline was not close to the stomach-churning days of the fall of 2008, when the Dow lurched lower and higher by 700 points some days, there were signs that fear on Wall Street was growing. The Dow fell 43 points Friday, 88 points Monday and 91 points Tuesday, then more than twice that on Wednesday.

"Right now the clouds are gathering," said Chris Long, a financial planner in Chicago.

Without a deal by Tuesday, the Obama administration has said the government will be unable to pay all its bills, and could miss checks to Social Security recipients, veterans and others who depend on public help. In addition, credit rating agencies could downgrade their assessment of the government's finances, further unnerving financial markets and perhaps causing interest rates to rise for everyone.

Already, some investors are taking precautions. Richard Shortt, 66, of Somerville, Mass., worries that a default, or even just a downgrade of U.S. debt, could cause bond and stock markets to tumble. Last week he sold about 10 percent of his stock holdings and put the proceeds into a money-market mutual fund.

"It might just be a short-term decline in the markets, but it could last a week or two while this gets resolved," said Shortt, a semi-retired small business consultant. "If we do get any sort of debt downgrade, even if we avoid a default, that will change the game a bit."

Financial advisers typically tell their clients not to tinker with their portfolios or try to play a short-term move in the market to their advantage. Of course, leaving investments alone could be a test of patience for the rest of this week.

On Friday afternoon, for example, it's plausible that Congress could reach a deal in mid-afternoon and send the Dow soaring 300 points in the final hour of trading. It's also plausible that there's still no deal and traders decide staying in the market over the weekend is too risky, and send the Dow plunging.

Investors who rode out the financial turbulence in 2008 without rejiggering their portfolios have made up most of their losses. The stock market has almost doubled since its post-meltdown low in March 2009. Many people who withdrew their money from the stock market during the worst haven't come close to breaking even.

"Trying to adjust to something on a day-to-day basis is how you get hurt," Glovsky said. "You've got to take a long-term approach."

The memory of October 2008 remains vivid. The Dow plunged 777 points in a single day when Congress surprised investors by rejecting an early version of $700 billion legislation to bail out the nation's biggest banks.

"We've been through this, or something like it," said Leisa Aiken, a financial planner in Chicago. "I think what we went through in 2008 has toughened clients up a little. They realize that they will get through it if they don't give in to a knee-jerk reaction."

This time around, analysts say, the chances of similar turmoil are small but growing. Standard & Poor's, one of the rating services, has said that "the reverberations of the showdown may be deep and wide ? particularly if Washington does not come to a timely agreement on the debt ceiling."

Bond traders were still betting on a last-minute deal on the debt. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which should rise when investors believe there is a greater risk they won't get their money back, has stayed near 3 percent all month.

Even if Washington sails past the deadline without raising the debt limit, bond traders believe the Obama administration will keep up its interest payments and cut spending on everything else. The resulting shock to the economy and other financial markets would make Treasury bonds a safe place for investors to hide, which could result in lower yields.

For individual investors, experts are cautioning against overreaction.

Financial planner Jim Pearman, a principal in Partners in Financial Planning in Roanoke, Va., said he was telling clients his firm isn't changing its investments based on a "game of chicken" in Congress.

"You have to make two decisions right when you try to time this thing. One is when you get out, and the other is when you get back in," he said. "It's hard to make that. We don't try."

One measure of investor concern, the Vix, or volatility index, shot up 14 percent on Wednesday. The tone of the market changed this week, as nervous investors began moving money out of stocks, said Howard Ward, a chief investment officer at asset manager GAMCO.

He said the stock market will likely become more volatile as the weekend nears, and while he said he was not repositioning his portfolio, he admitted: "Right now I'm pretty worried."

Norway suspect wanted European anti-Muslim crusade (AP)

OSLO, Norway ? The man blamed for killing at least 93 people during terrorist attacks on Norway's government headquarters and an island retreat for young people wanted to trigger an anti-Muslim revolution in Norwegian society, his lawyer said Sunday.

A chief surgeon treating the wounded from Friday's mass shooting, meanwhile, said he believes the attacker used special "dum-dum" bullets that cause massive internal injuries. The doctor told The Associated Press that the killer's chosen ammo "exploded inside the body."

The manifesto that 32-year-old suspect Anders Behring Breivik published online ranted against Muslim immigration to Europe and vowed revenge on those "indigenous Europeans" whom he deemed had betrayed their heritage. The document said they would be punished for their "treasonous acts."

Police said they were analyzing the approximately 1,500-page document. They said it was published Friday shortly before the back-to-back bomb and gun attacks.

Breivik's lawyer, Geir Lippestad, said his client wrote the document alone. But parts of it were taken almost word for word from the writings of "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski, who is serving a life sentence in federal prison in Colorado for mail bombs that killed three people and injured 23 others across the U.S. from the 1970s to the 1990s.

The passages copied by Breivik appear in the first few pages of Kaczynski's manifesto. Breivik changed a Kaczynski screed on leftism and what he considered to be leftists' "feelings of inferiority" ? mainly by substituting the words "multiculturalism" or "cultural Marxism" for "leftism." Breivik did not cite Kaczynski.

Police in Norway said they were investigating reports of a second assailant on the island, but the lawyer said Breivik claims no one helped him.

Breivik's treatise detailed plans to acquire firearms and explosives, and even appeared to describe a test explosion: "BOOM! The detonation was successful!!!" It ends with a note dated 12:51 p.m. on July 22: "I believe this will be my last entry."

That day, a bomb killed seven people in downtown Oslo and, about 90 minutes later, a gunman began opening fire on about 600 young people at a retreat on Utoya Island. Police said the death toll in the shooting rose by one Sunday to 86.

That brings total fatalities to 93, with more than 90 wounded. People remain missing at both scenes. Police have not released the names of any victims.

Authorities revealed Sunday that one of the attacker's first victims on the island was an off-duty police officer who had been hired by the camp directors to provide private security in his spare time. Oslo Police Union Chairman Sigve Bolstad declined to identify the victim.

That detail sheds new light on the confusion many survivors described during the 90-minute massacre. The attacker arrived dressed as a policeman, and some campers were killed when they approached the killer thinking he was there to save them.

Dr. Colin Poole, head of surgery at Ringriket Hospital in Honefoss northwest of Oslo, told The Associated Press the gunman used special bullets designed to disintegrate inside the body and cause maximum internal damage. Poole said surgeons treating 16 gunshot victims have recovered no full bullets.

"These bullets more or less exploded inside the body," Poole said. "It's caused us all kinds of extra problems in dealing with the wounds they cause, with very strange trajectories."

Ballistics experts say the so-called "dum-dum" bullets also are lighter in weight and can be fired with greater accuracy over varying distances. They commonly are used by air marshals and hunters of small animals. Such characteristics potentially would have allowed the gunman to carry more ammunition and fire his weapons at varying targets without adjusting his sights.

Officials at the lakeside scene of the island shooting spent Sunday continuing to account for the dead.

Six hearses pulled up at the shoreline as orange-jacketed Red Cross searchers on small boats slowly explored the extensive shoreline.

Body parts remain inside the Oslo building, which housed the prime minister's office. In a chilling allusion to the fact that the tragedy could have even been greater, police said Sunday that Breivik still had "a considerable amount" of ammunition for both his guns ? a pistol and an automatic rifle ? when he surrendered.

Police and his lawyer have said that Breivik confessed to the twin attacks, but denied criminal responsibility for a day that shook peaceful Norway to its core and was the deadliest ever in peacetime. Breivik has been charged with terrorism and will be arraigned Monday.

Lippestad said his client has asked for an open court hearing "because he wants to explain himself."

Police Chief Sveinung Sponheim said a forensics expert from Interpol was joining the investigation Sunday.

European security officials said they were aware of increased Internet chatter from individuals claiming they belonged to the Knights Templar group that Breivik describes, in fantastical terms, in the manifesto. They said they were still investigating claims that Breivik, and other far-right individuals, attended a London meeting of the group in 2002. The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the investigation.

The officials would not confirm whether they had identified Breivik as a potential threat.

As authorities pursued the suspect's motives, Oslo mourned the victims. Norway's King Harald V and his wife Queen Sonja and Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg crowded into Oslo Cathedral, where the pews were packed, and people spilled into the plaza outside. The area was strewn with flowers and candles, and people who could not fit inside the grand church huddled under umbrellas amid drizzling rain.

The king and queen both wiped tears from their eyes during the service themed on "sorrow and hope."

Afterward, people sobbed and hugged one another in the streets. Many lingered over the flowers and candles. The royal couple and prime minister later visited the site of the bombing in Oslo. The royals then visited shooting survivors at Ringriket Hospital.

The attacker picked targets linked to Norway's left-wing Labor Party. Breivik's manifesto pilloried the political correctness of liberals and warned that their work would end in the colonization of Europe by Muslims.

Such fears may derive, at least in part, from the fact that Norway has grown increasingly multicultural in recent years as the prosperous Nordic nation has opened its arms to thousands of conflict refugees from Pakistan, Iraq and Somalia. The annual Labor Party retreat ? which the prime minister, Stoltenberg, fondly remembers attending in his own youth ? reflected the country's changing demographics as the children of immigrants have grown increasingly involved in Labor politics.

The assaults have rattled Norway, home to the Nobel Prize for Peace and where the average policeman patrolling in the streets doesn't carry a firearm. Norwegians pride themselves on the openness of their society and cherish the idea of free expression.

"He wanted a change in society and, from his perspective, he needed to force through a revolution," Lippestad, the lawyer, told public broadcaster NRK. "He wished to attack society and the structure of society."

Lippestad said Breivik spent years writing the manifesto titled "2083 - A European Declaration of Independence." It was signed "Andrew Berwick." The document later explained that 2083 was to be the year when European government would be overthrown en masse.

Sponheim, the police chief, said there was no indication whether Breivik had selected his targets or fired randomly on the island. The manifesto vowed revenge on those it accused of betraying Europe.

"We, the free indigenous peoples of Europe, hereby declare a pre-emptive war on all cultural Marxist/multiculturalist elites of Western Europe. ... We know who you are, where you live and we are coming for you," the document said. "We are in the process of flagging every single multculturalist traitor in Western Europe. You will be punished for your treasonous acts against Europe and Europeans."

The use of an anglicized pseudonym could be explained by a passage in the manifesto describing the founding, in April 2002 in London, of a group he calls a new Knights Templar. The Knights Templar was a medieval order created to protect Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land after the First Crusade in the 11th century.

A 12-minute video clip posted on YouTube with the same title as the manifesto featured symbolic imagery of the Knights Templar and crusader kings as well as slides suggesting Europe is being overrun by Muslims.

Police could not confirm whether Breivik posted the video, which also featured photographs of him dressed in a formal military uniform and in a wet suit pointing an assault rifle.

The video contained a series of slides that accused left-wing politicians in Europe of allowing Muslims to overrun the continent. One image showed the BBC's logo with the "C" changed into an Islamic crescent. Another referenced the former Soviet Union, declaring that the end result of the left's actions would be an "EUSSR."

In London, the leader of Ramadhan Foundation, one of Britain's largest Muslim groups, said mosques are being extra vigilant in the wake of the attacks. Mohammed Shafiq told The AP he was talking to European Muslim leaders and British police about the need to increase security.

The last 100 pages of the manifesto apparently lay out details of Breivik's social and personal life, including his steroid use and an intention to solicit prostitutes in the days before the attack.

Also Sunday, police carried out raids in an Oslo neighborhood seeking explosives. Police spokesman Henning Holtaas said no explosives were found and no one was arrested.

Police said the bomb used in the Oslo blast was a mixture of fertilizer and fuel similar to what home-grown U.S. terrorists used to blow up a federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995.

A farm supply store said Saturday they had alerted police that Breivik bought six metric tons of fertilizer, a popular terrorist component for car bombs.

Evening Dresses For Plus Sized

Each woman likes to feel stunning every once in a while. For larger ladies this can occasionally be a rather major challenge. Lots of people don?t realise how challenging it might be for a bigger lady to really feel like she looks excellent. It is possible to find beautiful evening dresses for plus size women when you just know what to watch out for and exactly what designers to take into account.

A lot of designers make their gowns for the smaller sized women and don?t think about the way the product might look on a large lady. They tend to use ruffles round the sides and chest which just make a larger woman look a great deal larger. It makes me wonder why these designers actually permitted their gowns to be manufactured in a size larger than say an eight or 10. They simply don?t look good on a woman that is already nicely endowed.

If you are looking for or even designing evening dresses for plus size women here are some things to consider.

The simpler lines are often the best. Do not go for something which has luxurious ribbons and ruffles. Ruffles tend to make something appear a lot larger than it actually is and bigger women do not want to be made to look larger than they already are. Lace has a tendency to stretch if it?s put onto a sizable body and simply appears dreadful as you lose all the elegance which lace may convey on a smaller lady. Rather go for a straight up and down dress design if you wish to design dresses for plus size women. It is a lot more flattering.

Likewise try to avoid cut away backs and slits. A bigger woman will normally not want to reveal her skin. On top of that, many of the larger women may have some fat deposits i the thigh and back region that don?t look appealing and they will wish to keep these covered. A low neckline is not always a bad thing so long as you do not go overboard. A sizable lady will tend to have big breasts and you don?t want it to look as if they?re trying to escape the confines of the gown.

For sleeves, thinner is not always much better. A great design style will be the thicker cut off sleeve. This will help to cover the bra strap that?s unavoidable with a bigger lady because the strapless bra usually doesn?t have the necessary support. Lengthier flowing sleeves can also be pretty as they can be used to concealed loose and flabby upper arms if required whilst lending the appearance of elegance to the arm movements, just avoid those dreadful ruffles.

Should you be looking for dresses for plus size women then look for something which is going to be sliming and cover those areas you do not want attention drawn to. steer clear of things such as slits and also spaghetti shoulder straps and the strapless variety of gown. Ruffles will also tend to make the ruffled region look bigger therefore try to avoid these too.

Celebration! 1 Year in Business! Orling&Wu | Cavern Retail Consulting

Posted on by Cathy

Orling&Wu

Last week I sat down with co-owner of Orling&Wu, Julie Wu, to talk about the successes and challenges of her First year in business.

We started talking about her decision to locate her very sophisticated, almost delicate looking store on Water Street in the heart of a somewhat gritty Gastown. Julie said that the decision was almost an unconscious one. She thought from the beginning, that Gastown would be the location?and even imagined the storefront: A black Heritage building. She did admit that she did look at all different areas of the city, but somehow knew?It just had to be Gastown.

Surprise, Surprise!

I asked Julie if there had been any surprises in her first year?good or bad. She said that the best surprise has been how much foot traffic they get! She said that almost every week, she meets more and more people who are living and working in the area?most who are just out for a lunchtime walk and are so impressed with the store, they can?t wait to tell their friends!

What to Buy?What to Buy?

I was curious how?Julie decided on her current product mix. She said that she?believes in product that has ?some meaning to life.? Both Julie and her partner Fredrik have lived and worked in Europe, and are instinctively drawn to European inspired products. They also look for?merchandise that?is beautifully designed, with an equal emphasis on quality.

Having a Retail Store is EASY!?

Last, we spoke about the challenges of the first year. Julie laughed and said that considering she works in the store with her partner?the fact that they are still together is?a HUGE challenge, and a GREAT success! She mentioned that they are in the process of hiring a new store manager, and finding and retaining?staff has been a challenge. Julie said: ?If people don?t take retail as a serious career, That?s not the kind of people we want.? Finding the right staff who are the right fit for the store and their customer?is challenging?but considering the success of their first year?I?believe that they will find someone dynamic and unconventional, just like their store.

Thanks Julie???

Serbia arrests last major war crimes fugitive (Reuters)

BELGRADE (Reuters) ? Serbia arrested the last major war crimes suspect from the 1990s Yugoslav conflicts on Wednesday, closing what its president called a "burdensome" page in the country's history.

Goran Hadzic, a Croatian Serb wartime leader indicted for crimes against humanity during the 1991-95 Croatian war, was picked up by Serb forces in the picturesque Fruska Gora national park region about 65 km (40 miles) north of Belgrade.

"We nabbed him while he was about to meet a helper. He had changed his appearance somewhat and had fake papers on him," an operative familiar with the case told Reuters. "He did not resist arrest, but we were ready for all contingencies."

A stolen painting said to be by Italian figurative artist Amedeo Modigliani gave prosecutors an essential clue in finding Hadzic, Serbia's war crimes prosecutor said.

"The breakthrough was information that he wanted to sell a stolen Modigliani painting as he was running out of money," Vladimir Vukcevic told a news conference.

Hadzic, 52, was a key figure in the breakaway Krajina Serb republic in Croatia, and after the arrest of wartime Serb General Ratko Mladic earlier this year, he was the last suspect sought by the United Nations war crime tribunal in The Hague.

"We have closed a burdensome and gloomy page of our history," said President Boris Tadic, who called a special news conference to announce the arrest.

"We did this for the people of Serbia, for other nations, for the victims and for reconciliation."

Croatian President Ivo Josipovic welcomed the arrest.

"This is a contribution to justice and a contribution to better relations between the countries in the region," he told Reuters. "And I think it is good for Serbia to go through a certain catharsis with regards to the developments in the past war."

ARREST KEY TO EU PROGRESS

The European Union, which hailed Belgrade for finding Mladic in May, had insisted on Hadzic's arrest for Serbia to progress toward European Union membership.

"This is a further important step for Serbia in realizing its European perspective and equally crucially for international justice," three top EU officials said in a joint statement welcoming the arrest.

Tadic said Serbian security agents arrested Hadzic near the village of Krusedol, a short drive from the Croatian town where he was born. The surrounding area of Fruska Gora contains many holiday homes and 16 Serbian Orthodox monasteries.

Age, rather than elaborate disguise, had altered Hadzic. State run RTS TV showed footage of him during the arrest having lost much of his hair, put on weight and with a mustache but no trademark beard. He wore rimless glasses.

Tadic did not say where he had been hiding but said Hadzic was not arrested in a monastery or a military barracks.

Parts of the military had helped Mladic evade arrest for years and the Serbian Orthodox church played a controversial role in the Yugoslav wars, often stoking the flames of nationalism against Catholic Croats and Muslim Bosniaks, who largely have the same south Slav roots as the Serbs.

Hadzic is charged with ordering the killing of hundreds and the deportation of thousands of Croats and other non-Serbs from the region of Croatia he took over, including from Vukovar, a city still bearing deep scars 16 years after the end of the war.

"Of course the arrest of Hadzic is good news for humanity and the whole world, but first and foremost for us in Croatia," Croatian Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said in Warsaw.

For years Hadzic was overshadowed by the higher profile ethnic Serb fugitives Radovan Karadzic, the Bosnian Serb leader, and his military commander Mladic. Hadzic may ultimately be remembered mostly as the man who evaded justice longer than others charged with crimes in the 1990s Yugoslav wars.

"He is much more discreet than the others in terms of personality and what he did," said Anna Maria Corazza Bildt, a member of European Parliament who served during the war with U.N. forces in the region of Croatia where Hadzic was a regional leader. "He was not a particularly notable personality."

EU SOUGHT HIS ARREST

Both NATO and Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt, a former E.U. and U.N. Envoy to the region, said it closed an important chapter in recent European history.

"I warmly congratulate Serbia," Bildt said.

The Netherlands, which hosts the war crimes tribunal and had blocked Serbia's bid to join the EU until all suspects were handed over, said the arrest was a "good step" but that Serbia also needed to tackle corruption and economic reform.

U.N. war crimes prosecutor Serge Brammertz said Hadzic was expected to be extradited to the court in The Hague within days, the last of the 161 suspects indicted by the court to be transferred.

"We can now say that no indicted person has successfully evaded the tribunal's judicial process. This is a precedent of enduring significance," Brammertz said.

Hadzic's lawyer Toma Fila told Reuters his client would not fight the extradition: "He will be visited by family in the next couple of days and will be most likely ready to go by Saturday."

Hadzic lived openly in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad until July 2004, when The Hague sent an indictment and arrest warrant to Belgrade. He fled immediately, tipped off by nationalist hardliners in Serbia's security services.

In an interview, his lawyer said he had been out of the country for most of the last seven years, but did not say where.

Hadzic, an ex-warehouse foreman who rose to prominence as a Serb nationalist activist in early 1990s, also gained notoriety for his involvement in murky deals including illegal exports of oak, stolen cars, wine and crude oil from a well under Serb control.

He was frequently seen in the company of Zeljko "Arkan" Raznatovic, a paramilitary leader and then head of Belgrade's underworld.

Why Tolerate The Liars? | Minds Adrift - News, Religion, Society ...

It?s an unfortunate reality, but a politician is a politician. What do I mean? It?s painful, demoralizing, and destructive, but politicians lie, make unrealistic promises, and play games with serious issues. It doesn?t matter what party it is, what their stated religion, or if they are pro-life or pro-choice, they are politicians at the core. They want power, they want to project their version of the world, and they want your vote.

The looming crisis of the debt ceiling is a good case in point. One side says we are running out of time and will wreak financial destruction if we fail to raise the debt limit, the other says we have plenty of money and that the other side is simply trying to scare us. Both can?t be equally true. One side must be wrong, will be wrong, and will probably be reelected in 2012.

Who?s responsible for this nightmare reality? I guess we all are. There are many elections in which an ?outsider? runs for office (president or congress), promises to not play ?the game? and clean up the office he/she is running for. This candidate almost never wins. Why? Well, maybe it?s because we?re all jaded by the nature of politicians, and we figure everyone is lying. On the other hand, I think deep down we like how our successful politicians play the game, manipulate the system, and achieve the base level results we desired (whether or not it was good for the majority, the underprivileged, or the poor). We put up with it and continue to play the game so long as it?s going good from our point of view, despite lies and empty promises.

I wish there was a positive note to end this post on, but despite our rhetoric of change we seem fairly content without it.
